2011 NFL Scouting Combine: DB Workout Open Thread
--Since we're still on top, talk about CB and Safety Workouts here too.
I'm back on my couch watching, and today will be very interesting to see how this great Defensive Line class does working out.
Discuss the day's proceedings.

I'm especially interested in..
Lawrence Wilson, Jarvis Jenkins and Sione Fua. Heres hoping to them doing a bad 40 or something so they fall to us.
I'm not able to watch today...
but I would love to hear how Greg Jones out of Michigan St. looks. I think he would be a good fit in our system and we all know how Polian likes Big Ten Guys.
As Danny said, I’m interested in Fua as well. He could be late round GOLD!
Bleedin' Blue for as long as I can remember. Can you believe we get to be fans while our team has the greatest QB of all time?!?!?!
Not surprised by Jenkins
Again, I’m not cheerleading him as an insta-stud All-Pro dominant DT, but I think he’s just what Indy’s rotation needs right now.

You want him in the second round?
He may not last to our third.

Here's my draft philosophy this year:
I want an OT in the first if that OT can play right away. Don’t care if he’s a LT or RT, they can upgrade both. First should be OT.
From there? BPA at DT, S, WR and CB.

My feelings exactly.

Very likely
I expect that to be most likely.
DL has more depth than S in this draft, that is why I expect Polian to go safety in round 2 and DL/WR in rounds 3 and/or 4.
Is it just groupthink?
I feel the exact same way. I think the interior Oline positions will be worked out between Saturday, McClendon, Pollak, Thomas, DeVan and Charlie Johnson so long as we can upgrade both OT spots. With better Tackle play, the overall Oline play should increase as well.
Love Jarvis Jenkins.
His 17 in the bench press doesn't worry you?

Dontay Moch, DE/OLB, Nevada
Putting up insane numbers. 42" vertical, 4.45 unofficial forty. Kid really impressed at the Sr Bowl so I’m not surprised. That seems to be a trend here.

Robert Quinn, DE, N. Carolina
I feel he’s a guy who’s going to get WAY overscrutinized at the Combine and perhaps not go no. 1 overall as a result. Teams overthink when they get Combine results. Go off game tape. The kid is going to be a great player.

Exercise:
Name all the teams he registered sacks against in his last season.
Name all the teams he only had 1 tackle against in his last season.
It’s pretty interesting and it explains why some are a little more reserved in their evaluation of Quinn.
Answers:
Citadel, East Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Southern, Duke, Boston College. Over half of his sacks came against Virginia and Duke.
Florida State, Virginia Tech, Miami. He struggled to have an impact against the good teams.
I do think he’s a tremendous athlete. I just think he’s more of a risk than people are attributing to a player who hasn’t stepped on a field in over a year.

Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida
Chris Neild, DT, West Virginia (a pocket pusher in the late rounds, high character guy too) – http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=2780

Moch looks really good as does Kerrigan in the DE department. I’m looking forward to seeing the Defensive Backs.
Cameron Jordan
Wow, this dude is rising up draft boards with a great Senior Bowl and combine.

4.71 in the 40 weighing 287 lbs, impressive indeed. Jenkins is not too far behind with a 4.98 weighing 310 lbs, IMO. I did see Jenkins pursuing Colin Kapernick down to the sidelines at the Senior Bowl showing a lot of athleticism forcing Colin to throw it away. The Colts sure could use that athleticism on the DL, Jenkins is a great fit if available at pick No.53.
WR as a draft need?
It kind of surprises me that you’re listing WR as a draft priority. I know this is a draft class that has a decent amount of mid level talent and it’s always fun to consider giving some new toys to play with, but I’m feeling pretty confident in our receiving corps. I think Gonzo will end up staying and Taj Smith will take up another roster spot because of his special teams play. Team that up with Collie and a Pierre Garcon who is preforming better than Reggie Wayne did at the same point in his career and there isn’t much room for another guy. I would say you’re right on with OT, S, CB, DT as priorities (in that order), but it would take a pretty amazing steal to consider a WR before the 4th round.
Gonzo and Collie are still huge question marks to me
and Reggie’s long-term outlook with this team isn’t splendid. I think WR is absolutely a need.

For WR (I know its a long shot but)
A teammate of mine at Trine is entering into the draft and be great to get late round or maybe UFA. Paul Curtis, (6’ 180lbs) was our leading recever the last three years. I can’t find he total stats but last season PC had 49 catches for 1144 yards for 13 TDs. And he is very consistant catching the ball. An knowing him personly he’s a hard worker and willing to do what ever it takes to help the team.
Major down side is playing at the D3 level, but he did have 5 catches for 81 yards and 2 TD vs the D3 national champion UW-Whitewater. And their as good as it gets at this level.

No offense
But no way your friend gets drafted. You better have some eye-popping numbers and measurables at the D3 level to even have a shot at the sixth round, let alone UDFA.

Paea
I know the Colts liked this kid, and hes projected as a late first rounder because of the knee injury. I usually don’t fall for those combine numbers but those 49 reps were absurd. He looked pretty explosive at Oregon State as well. Do we get him with the first and draft OL later?
Paea did look impressive..
But I don’t think we take him in the first. I think if none of the OTs we want are gone we could trade down for value , which to me seems like a BP move.

Marvin Austin info
Hey Collin, can you get an interview with Marvin Austin and ask him if the Colts have interviewed him at this combine?
Jarvis Jenkins, do any of you think he benefited from playing beside DaQuan Bowers or is he really legit?
Looks like the ACC trumps the SEC (or any other conference) this year for highly touted picks.
Yeah I would like to know more about Marvin Austin and his run stopping abilities.
I think Jarvis Jenkins is good and it would be great if he lasted to round 3 but I don’t know if he will.

No more interviews
We’re done at the Combine. No more media. Prospects don’t typically list the teams that have talked to them as most have anyway. You won’t glean much from that knowledge.

Oh well
I guess the ones that I was interested originally for the Colts, outside Sherrod were Marvin Austin, Jarvis Jenkins, Rodney Hudson, and Leonard Hankerson – all ACC products co-incidentally, so got carried away :-). I agree that the SEC has the best talent in this draft on the top.
In the top 2 rounds, there is a lot of talent to be had and the ACC probably has 10-12 guys in the top 2 round grades while the SEC has about 15-17 guys, the ACC probably has good second round talent to be looked at, it seems like.
Kendric Burney with disappointing 4.83

Dejon Gomes
is a player I think can fill the void at SS for the Colts. decent height at 6’0, good speed with 4.46 and was very productive at nebraska
by metal_militia on Mar 1, 2011 10:33 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
I'm honestly convinced
Antoine Bethea covers SO much ground and can do so much from the safety position, the Colts shouldn’t have trouble finding someone to fill the void. I mean, the Colts got by with Aaron Francisco last year. If they can do that, I feel like they should be able to plug any fourth or fifth round safety in and do well. And I feel like we keep forgetting about Melvin Bullitt as well.

Exactly
The Colts have to option to re-sign him to address the safety position. And no way Hayden moves to S.

I saw him in drills and I completely agree
He may be a little raw as of yet, but he would be able to develop behind Melvin. He was always in on tackles or forcing the RB out of his intended path. I really see this happening.

Deion praising this kid left and right. I was a big fan of him in the Shrine Bowl. Don’t know that he’s a day one starter at safety, but he’ll make a living in the NFL on special teams. Maybe one of the best special teams players in the draft.

Wasn’t Nebraska’s secondary one of the tops in the nation? It does not happen without good safety play, IMO.

I didn't wait for that
I think those are stupid anyway. You run a drill for a week, you learn it. And these players will run plenty of drills from April to August.
Just spreading some news, we gave up a 7th rounder for Tryon??? That would be nice
It says: Heading into the 2011 draft, the Redskins currently have seven picks—a first, a second, two fifths, a sixth and two sevenths. The extra fifth and seventh rounders are conditional picks resulting from the Jammal Brown and Justin Tryon (Colts) trades.
