2011 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: The Definitive Fan Mock

Starting last Monday, Dan Kadar, Brian Galliford, and the other writers at Mocking the Draft, SB Nation's NFL Draft blog, began hosting the 2011 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft.

We've done this draft for one, two, three, four... uh, wow. We've done this for five years! In previous mock drafts, I took Justin Harrell in 2007, Matt Forte in 2008, Mark Sanchez in 2009 (it was later changed to Ziggy Hood after the Jay Cutler trade forced a re-draft; Sanchez went to the Vikings), and Charles Brown in 2010

Not bad, right! My only busted pick was Justin Harrell, which I made up for by taking Ziggy Hood two years later.

The way this works is the site managers from the 32 SBN NFL sites draft for their team in the first two rounds. MtD is running three picks a day (9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 3 p.m.). The draft will take the weekends off. There are no trades in this mock and you'll get to instantly grade the pick.

When pick no. 22 gets close, I will solicit advice from the community as to who I should pick. And, yes, the opinions of this community will factor into my decision.

The draft is already through pick no. 6. After the jump, check out who has been taken already.

Star-divide

With that, the San Francisco 49ers - and our friends at Niners Nation - are now on the clock.

Brown could probably be considered a bust too

Back when I was picking beans in Guatemala, we used to make fresh coffee, right off the trees I mean. That was good. This is shit but, hey, I'm in a police station.

Really?

I don’t know if ‘bust’ is fair for him at this point. He looked decent in pre-season, and I don’t think he played much in 2010 because the Saints o-line was healthy. It seems that, according to some Saints fans, Brown is being groomed to play left tackle. Bushrod is, I believe, a free agent and the Saints might let him walk.

Thus, Brown will get his shot. So, calling him a ‘bust’ at this point is a bit excessive.

Oh, and for anyone who comes in here screaming ‘BUT! BUT! But what about Jerry Hughes? You called him a bust, and he hasn’t been given a chance!’

Sorry, not true. Hughes looked awful in preseason last year, especially in that Green Bay game. And as we have discussed many times, the Colts were singing Jerry’s praises in late April only to have a distinctly different tune about him in August. And with all kinds of injuries affecting both the defense and special teams, the Colts thought so little of Jerry that they deactivated him for six games for non-injury-related reasons. Bill Polian even publicly admitted drafting Hughes was a mistake.

So, the circumstances between both players are very different. Hughes has looked awful while Brown, at least, offers some flicker of possibility. I also said Jerry was becoming a bust. Not quite there yet, but unfortunately looking that way.

i give you that "bust" may not be fair, but let's say you were definitely reaching with this pick last year

and in-hindsight could have done better for us. And you are right about missing on Harrell, but I won’t be too down on you about Brown because I remember many people here did want him then, and I have always been against him. Never really liked his game.

USC

If I remember, you watched him sever la times at USC, right? I only saw him in film clips and stuff on YouTube. Plus, the Colts had (and still have) a big need at LT. Most people had Brown ranked as a first rounder too.

i think wiffing on Saffold is bigger than missing on Brown

Polian even came out and publicly said that they should have taken Saffold

Saffold

I should have taken Saffold over Brown. That I’ll admit.

I’ll also admit I like the Hughes pick when Polian made it. However, unlike Bill, I’m not paid millions to make those decisions.

don't beat yourself up, i dont think most people had saffold in the 1st. with many things hindsight is 20/20

I think the saffold thing is kind of sore for me because i’m an IU guy. i really do believe that in the future we will look back at the 2010 draft and call is a success.

I hope you're right

As much as I bash Polian, and as much as I dislike him personally, I always want to be wrong when it comes to criticizing his personnel decisions.

Ziggy Hood wasnt an amazing pick

Not a bust i suppose, but only marginally better then jerry hughes.

Your pick of Sanchez, Forte and Brown were all good though. Especially Sanchez. I think hes not a top level QB but if he had a few years behind #18 you could easily trade him for much higher value then what we drafted him.

Brown hasn't shown anything yet.

Especially if you want to say “ALL 1ST ROUND DRAFT PICKS MUST CONTRIBUTE!!!”

Drugs are bad.

It seems as if this is another double standard brought up by several people

It was claimed that Jerry Hughes should have done more this year, but he didn’t really have a chance as the two starters ahead of him were healthy the entire season…

But when Brown didn’t perform at all this year and show what he could do… no worries, it’s because

I don’t think he played much in 2010 because the Saints o-line was healthy.

Ziggy Hood

He started nine games this past year for the AFC Champion Steelers, and amassed 20 tackles and 3 sacks. I’d place up here Jerry Hughes’ ‘stats’ for 2010, but I don’t want to make your ‘marginally better then jerry hughes’ statement look more ridiculous.

Ziggy Hood is a good DT (DE is a 3-4). He probably would have been a better pick for Indy in 2009 over Donald ‘3.8 a carry’ Brown.
