With The 21st Pick In The 2011 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, The Kansas City Chiefs Select...

Mock_draft_medium

Drake Nevis - DT, LSU

Guest Pick made by SB Nation Indiana Assoc. Editor Travis Miller, explanation by FreeneyAteMyLunch:

After 3 years of tough football, the Chiefs had a bounce back campaign in 2010. They won 10 regular season games and made the playoffs for the first time since they lost to our Colts in 2006. Now they are an improved team built around a strong running game and a solid defense. There are still some holes that need to be resolved if they are going to remain a playoff contender.

The most glaring weakness is at the number 2 wide receiver slot. This is evidenced by Chris Chambers (wr2) having less than half the receptions and receiving yards of their tight end or running back. Many Chiefs fans don't think Cassel can make more reads than look for Bowe then drop it off, but I would like to see what he could do with more talent.

Unfortunately there is not first round wr talent still on the board for them to take. Inconsistency at right tackle makes that a position of need as well. While that would be a solid pick it is not where I think they will go. The Chiefs are going to continue to improve the defense and give Crennel more pieces to work with. Every Chiefs fan I know is clamoring for a true nose tackle that can eat space in their 3-4 scheme.

While I agree that is a need, I think they can fill that position later in the draft. What the Chiefs really need is some more sacks. Tamba Hali is a beast that had 14.5 sacks last year. I remember screaming at the TV as he abused Ryan Diem all game last year and no help coming. The fact is that if he can be contained they don't have much of a pass rush.

That is why they need Drake Nevis from LSU. Nevis is an explosive player that has a strong bull rush and a variety of other effective moves. He is also able to get penetration in the run game and take on double teams when needed. He is a tough, nasty player that will be able to make an early impact next year.

If Nevis is taken 21st overall, it'll be the fourth time in the last seven years the Chiefs have taken a DL in the first round (Junior Siavii, Tamba Hali, Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson). Also, he'd be the third LSU DL taken by the Chiefs in the past 4 years, joining Dorsey and Jackson.

LSU flavor

This has an LSU tiger fan flavor written all over it.

He did write:

“Every Chiefs fan I know is clamoring for a true nose tackle that can eat space in their 3-4 scheme. While I agree that is a need, I think they can fill that position later in the draft.”

Phil Taylor was staring right at you, and would like to have a word with you :-).

Curious selection..

I’d have gone for an O-line choice, probably Carimi. Hell, Cassel isn’t even that good, so I’d go for Newton over Nevis in terms of value.

But hey, interesting selections are what make these things fun.

Antoine Bethea - the most underrated safety in the NFL.

Other AFC teams would love this.

Drake Nevis being picked at least 20 spots ahead where he should be. He does not work with that defense, unless it is only on passing downs. If on passing downs, KC plays alot of 3-4. Big help for teams drafting right after this.

really?

1) that pick make zero sense and will never happen. did you just see that they took 2 lsu dt’s and figured you saw a pattern?

2) the guy isnt even first round talent

3) do you know that the chiefs play a 3-4?

4) siavii wasnt a first rounder. he was a 2nd rounder. really bad pick and write up

You make some fair points, but here is my take

1. Agreed, the pick was made for me because I didn’t get the email and missed my slot.
2. He is borderline, but probably a second round guy
3. That was mentioned in the write up
4. The Chiefs most pressing team needs are wide reciever, right tackle, and nose tackle. I think I covered this in the write up.

Missed my pick time

I missed my chance to select and Nevis was selected for me. I think the correct pick is Carimi. I just tried to do the best I could with the selection.

we've discussed Carimi over at AP ... my personal pick (for OLine) is Derek Sherrod

a lot of the guys wnat NT … Taylor is the only viable 1st round pick, not sure he’s all that good myself … OLB another possibility …

see below for other names we’ve kicked around

anyone but Drake Revis … like … who???
