What If the Colts Drafted Rodger Saffold?

What if the Colts Drafted Rodger Saffold?

With the 31st overall pick the Indianapolis Colts select... Jerry Hughes. What?!?!?

Every single Colt fan believed that the Colts were going to help out their O-line which looked like it was declining. Rodger Saffold was the perfect guy for our offense; he was a pretty big guy at 6’4 323 pounds, and played left tackle.

In the 2010 season, the starters were:

Charlie Johnson at Left Tackle

Kyle Devan at Left Guard

Jeff Saturday at Center

Mike Pollak at Right Guard

Ryan Diem at Right Tackle

If Saffold was drafted it could have been:

Rodger Saffold at Left Tackle

Charlie Johnson at Left Guard

Jeff Saturday at Center

Kyle Devan or Mike Pollak at Right Guard

Ryan Diem at Right Tackle

Charlie Johnson has proven in the past that he can play guard, and is the perfect size for it at 6’4 300 pounds.

This season Rodger Saffold had in St Louis was amazing, and I expect to see him in the Pro Bowls in the years to come. The offense the Rams played this year was more of a pass heavy offense (60% pass, 40% run). The Colts are definitely are pass heavy offense (75% pass, 25% run). Our offensive line this year was horrible, the worst in the Peyton Manning era, and with Saffold that could have changed. Rodger Saffold was named to multiple All-Rookie teams for his great year as the starting left tackle for the Rams. If he would have played like that for the Colts it could have made a huge difference in our season. Maybe it could have been the difference between a win and a loss in the Cowboys game, or the difference between elimination and advancing in the playoffs. The slightest things make a difference.

Now, let’s look at Jerry Hughes. He was drafted to play behind Robert Mathis and/or Dwight Freeney. The backups behind Mathis and Freeney were Dawson and Foster, NOT Hughes. Bill Polian is quoted as saying that “I made a mistake” saying that he should have drafted Saffold, who went to Indiana University, instead of choosing Hughes. Hughes had a total of 6 tackles this year. Yes, he had 6 tackles, not 6 sacks, not 6 interceptions, not 6 fumbles recoveries, only 6 tackles. We wasted a chance at improving our O-line for 6 measly tackles.

Obviously my point is, this pick ruined our season. It ruined it because the main problem on our team that week after week we had trouble doing was running the ball to the outside, and who do you need to run around to go to the outside... the tackle. Charlie is very respectable, but not a starting tackle, more of a guard in my opinion.  Ryan Diem doesn’t have that much time left, and the same goes for Jeff Saturday, but both have replacements.

All in all, the 2010 NFL Draft really hurt us because Bill Polian had the opportunity to draft a quality blind side tackle, but wasted it on a player that we definitely don’t need. It was a missed opportunity and it cost us the season. But now it’s a part of history, and nothing can be changed now.
