Leverage. Peyton has it more than anyone in recent history.

The Stampede Blue Nation is in a buzz today.  News surfacing about Peyton Manning and Drew Brees asking not to be included in the franchise tag has everyone in an uproar.  Peyton isn't going to become an unrestricted free agent, he isn't going to suck the Colts dry and prevent us from being competitive in the future and he isn't a greedy, self absorbed money hungry Terrell Owens type.  Peyton is merely using his name, reputation and achievements to help settle the ongoing labor dispute.

Peyton Manning is the face of the Indianapolis Colts and the NFL.  Peyton is also, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek 2011 poll.  Now if you had the name value, pedigree, business savvy, on the field accomplishments and power  that Peyton has.  I ask, would you use that too potentially help not just yourself, but fellow players for an ongoing contract negotiation?  Peyton is at the top of his game, he is a Madison Avenue darling, he is considered the best to ever play the position and is an ideal role model.  If I am DeMaurice Smith, I am chomping at the bit to use my 3 headed monsters(Brees, Brady and Manning) to settle this contract.  Not only to settle the contract, but to get the best deal possible for the players.

The news of Brees and Manning not wanting to be included in the Franchise Tag is purely a leverage tactic.  If you were finalizing the details on a new contract and had an ace up your sleeve like this, wouldn't you play it?  I would.

definitely the most in football

but he has a ways to before he reaches the level of insanity that was “The Decision” in the NBA last year.

I would say Peyton could make a Decision that would make LeBrons look small.

Peyton is a champion, still in his prime and at a position that is the most important in all of sports. LeBron is an up and coming star. His best days are in front of him, but he still hasnt won a ring, Peyton has, is acknowledged by his peers as the best and continues to defy the odds and set the mark higher and higher.

but does he have like 10 years left to get a in-his-prime contract for every year like Lebron's was?

and I hope and believe that Manning has class, a lot more than “the king” lol

Time is not on Peytons side.

But does Peyton even look like he is gonna slow down at all? I say no. I believe he had his best season last year. Especially considering how inept we were at O Line, RB and the injuries to the WR corps last year. Then think about how bad our Defense was at times and you come to the reality that if not for Peyton, we were sub 500 last year. If Lebron were to leave Miami, they would be ok. LeBron leaving Cleveland was a big deal. Cleveland were horrible. I see some similarities in LeBron and Peyton.

but it is a different situation than Lebron had

basketball is probably the most obvious team sport where one single player can just dominate by themselves. Lebron plays both ways, was 25, and his prime was (is?) still in sight. his contract would end at the twilight when he starts regressing, and he was able to pick anywhere to make them an almost instant FInals (at least make it there) every year.

No team, no matter how talented, is a guarantee to make the Super Bowl every year. It doesn’t work that way. Even with a Peyton Manning or a Tom Brady, it doesn’t. Plus, there are a ton more players (52 of them) that need to be paid besides the ridiculous amount Manning will get and that Brady got last year. Peyton doesn’t play defense either, so the Lebron comparison doesn’t really work.

Great argument...

Basketball (and baseball) are much more individual sports. As you said, there are really only 8-10 guys impacting a game for each team, and they play both sides of the ball. In football, a guy like Manning or Brady, is one of ~15 offensive players to have an impact on the game. Then factor in special teams (yes it counts) and defense (another ~15 players), and one’s impact can only be so much over the course of a season.
