2011 Colts Undrafted Free Agents- Updated List [UPDATE] Colts Sign Notre Dame LBer Kerry Neal

Here is an updated list for the 2011 Colts rookie free agents signings:

RB Darren Evans, Virginia Tech
RB Chad Spann, Northern Illinois
WR Joe Horn, Ashland
TE Mike McNeill, Nebraska
OL Jake Kirkpatrick, TCU
LB Adrian Moten, Maryland
LB Chris Colasanti, Penn State
DB Joe Lefeged, Rutgers
PK Travis Baltz, Maryland
WR David Gilreath, Wisconsin
QB Mike Hartline, Kentucky
DT Ollie Ogbu, Penn State
LB Kerry Neal, Notre Dame

For most of last night and early today, people weren't sure if the Colts had signed Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien. Last night, NFL Draft Insider told me that Tolzien signed with the Seahawks. Then, we got word from his agent that he didn't. Early today Jim Polzin at the WSJ tweeted that Tolzien was a Colt:

#Badgers WR/returner David Gilreath headed to #Colts, where he will join former UW QB Scott Tolzien.

Not long after that tweet, Matt Zahn wrote:

Scott Tolzien's agent just told me he is going to the

I think it's safe to say now that Tolzien is not a Colt.

We will update the list as the day rolls on.

[UPDATE] According to UK IMG Sports, Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline has signed with the Colts. UK fans might remember that Hartline was arrested in December of 2010 for alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct.

[UPDATE No. 2] Colts have signed Ollie Ogbu, a DT from Penn State. Ogbu is 6'1, 300 pounds and he played in the East-West Shrine Game.

[UPDATE No. 3] Colts have signed Kerry Neal, a linebacker from Notre Dame. Neal tweeted today that he was coming to Colts. Neal is known for stomping on an opponent's chest during a 35-17 blowout loss to Navy last year. No disciplinary action was taken against Neal. At 6'1, 239 pounds, he's a bit taller insider linebacker than we are used to seeing in Indy.

2 Indianapolis natives who have been prolific in their careers at some point

Darren Evans from Warren Central and Chad Spann from North Central

2 different kind of RB’s but each could offer something the Colts need in the backfield

I hope they both make the team

Three new RB's

Glad to see something being done about the run game: Chad Spann is nice. Wonder if Donald Brown is feeling the heat??

Hey, hey.

We got Joe Horn. And please note, the link to Joe Horn is not the right Joe Horn.

http://condraft.com/profile.php?id=4280

From what I understand he is a tough player and is great on special teams. Blocked something like 6 punts in college and is a gunner on ST. Is also a great KO/PR guy.

I got a feeling with all the RBs and Horn Devin Moore is going to really have to flash some greatness.

Sorry

3 career punt blocks. Got that confused with 6 TDs in one game.

good updates

it will be a wild week, Colts usually pretty good at finding some good free agents we need another QB do not want to see Curtis Painter leading the offense in training camp until Peyton comes back,, THAT WOULD BE TORTURE,,,the only place I want to see Painter is on the sidelines holding a clipboard!!!!

Dane Sanzenbacher

Fantastic Slot Receiver for a position that seems to always be a place where injuries pile up…I know we have a ton, but I think Dane can be better than Blair White and Collie is a beast, but who knows how many more hits he can take…

Joe Horn

This guy is pretty funny, I was watching some highlights of him on youtube. On one play he catches the ball in the flat defender over pursues and he beats the cover zero to run into the endzone afterwards he lambeau leaps into the crowd of two people and the people were confused it looked like so he patted them…. idk just really had me laughing.

When I dismount I point to my "Helmeted Marine" and tell the receiver to "FINISH HIM!" and I'd say that would have to be my signature. Fact.

Here's the video of Horn's senior year at Ashland

the ‘AU leap’ is just a couple minutes in – the 93 yard kick-off return to start is pretty sweet.

just read - rumor Indy Star Peyton may be asking for 25 million a year

hope that is not the case,, Irsay said he can’t pay him that and sign anyone else he refused 20 million a year( Brady making 18),, 21 Million sounds fair to me have to have some cash to surround him with some players!!!!!!!!

by OBGYNOSUPREME on Jul 26, 2011 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

agree with that

but he ain’t signing for less than 20.5 a yr since his agent turned down 20,,I know he realizes that Colts need money to sign other players and if it was me and u we would take less than the max we could get in order to get enough players to win another 1 or 2 SB before he retires, we would go for the legacy ,,he ain’t hurting foir cash with all his other stuff he has going on and he deserves every penny of it

yes painter is an eye sore

I unfortunatley attended the NYJ colts game when they rested starters and I literally think I could of outplayed Painter. He can’t throw and he cant read defenses is he seriously on the team because he is a Purdue alum lol

There were many things awful (on many levels)

about that game, but you’re right, putting Painter in…..pretty much guaranteed a Colt’s loss and therefore a shattered winning streak, and no chance to go 19-0. Most back-ups on other teams would have at least given the Colts a chance at a victory. A fighting chance would have been better than no chance. And, no chance is what you get with Mr. Painter.

I almost get as excited for rookie FA signings as the draft

I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of these guys become a starter for the Colts at some point in their career and two or three become solid backups.

Signed with the Colts.

Interesting note: The PSU UDFA’s are getting signed in two’s. Gbadyu & Eliades to OAK, Brackett & Devlin to MIA, Ogbu & Colasanti to IND.

Excited about Ogbu, not about Colasanti

Read this:

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=66047&draftyear=2011&genpos=DT

It says: PLAYERS TO WATCH: What had been the backbone of previous Penn State defenses was its weakness this season. The Nittany Lions gave up an average of 164.6 yards on the ground, many of them in the second half. Tackles Ollie Ogbu and Devon Still were solid and occupied blockers, but a Penn State linebacker rotation plagued by inconsistency and injury could not make enough plays behind them. Undersized safeties Malcolm Willis and Drew Astorino wound up having to make too many tackles down the field. – The Sports Xchange

I want no part of that LB corp for our team, bye bye Colasanti then. Ogbu could be a good run blocker, it seems like.

by chad72 on Jul 26, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't find much on Colasanti...

Do you mean you’re just MORE excited about Ogbu or you’re upset about the Colasanti signing?

by GoHorse88 on Jul 26, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

More excited about Ogbu

We needed help with the 1-technique and it seems like occupying blockers is what Ogbu did at Penn State. Hopefully, he is the next Ed Johnson without the weed :-)

Didn’t read the part of your post after the quote from NFLDraftScout.

Yeah, if Colasanti was playing then. From what I read he was not a F/T starter.

by GoHorse88 on Jul 26, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

NFL writers..........

…..are high on Kirkpatrick – both Gil Brandt and Pat Kirwan have him ranked at number 5 in their undrafted free agents list albeit both have him listed as a Center – Brandt goes as far as saying that Kirkpatrick reminds him of Jeff Saturday.

If that’s true, I’ll be hoping he makes the roster.

by TartanColt1 on Jul 26, 2011 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Jake Kirkpatrick's technique is good

You can work on strength more than technique in the NFL after coming from college. That is why I feel good about Kirkpatrick.

We might see the end of the tunnel for the last 2 of the Center parade from the 2008 draft – Pollak and Jamey Richard.

Spann is an amazing back!

He is a powerful inside runner, but is also good out of the backfield. Just a tad undersized, but people say that about Danny Woodhead, too. I can really see him used in the slot, in motion and at RB. Great pick-up!

by Cincicougar on Jul 26, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Alright

Plethora of RBs – Addai, Brown, Carter, Moore, Rhodes, James, Spann, Evans.

We let Edge and Faulk walk. We hired the former Pitt RB coach that coached in the Big East and has ties to D.Brown. We got the short yardage replacement for Hart in Carter.

So, I expect Addai, Rhodes, Moore and James gone too. The only one likely to be re-signed in that list is Addai.

So, when it is all said and done – Addai, Brown, Carter and 1 other RB (due to return skills primarily – could be Spann, Evans or Moore) will be the final RB rotation

Surprised with no CB signing

I am surprised that no CBs have been signed, they must really be happy with our depth then. But then, our CBs have been the most injured too 4 out of the last 5 years (top 5 in the league or something like that).

We have Hayden, Powers, Tryon, Lacey, Kevin Thomas, Cornelius Brown and Chris Rucker. Not to mention guys like Mike Newton/Brandon King for safety options along with Bethea, Bullitt and Lefeged. I still expect some CB UDFA signing, we always do.

by chad72 on Jul 26, 2011 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

I am also surprised we didn’t sign any, because we usually sign many UDFA CB’s…but I think we’ll probably have enough DB depth with all of those you listed.

If possible, would love a FA DT signing

And possible trickle down effect of having an effective 1-tech DT in the middle to allow the LBs to make more plays and take some pressure off of the DBs to make so many tackles, thereby reducing potential for injuries.

I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

free agents

rotoworld has a report that the colts are one of teams talking to eric weddle’s agent. Would be huge a upgrade if we cauld get him. Also with new a running back coach and 230lb D Evans and 225lb D. Carter and larger ol, maybe we we can look for a more power based run game

So no love for Notre Dame?

Maybe you think Neal’s one action was sketchy… that’s just ONE action. It says nothing about his overall character or skills. It didn’t even seem that bad. Anyone who’s played football for a while has probably got stepped on before, I know I have. It’s kinda blatent that BigBlue doesn’t like the guy when he posts a video like that instead of one of him making a play. He obviously is known for football too, or the Colts wouldn’t be picking him up. With Session and Hagler possibly leaving, we need some new LBs. And yes, I am a biased Notre Dame fan. I live down the street from the campus. Hahaha!

The guys I wanted from Notre Dame were...

Ian Williams, NT (signed with 49ers) and Darrin Walls, CB (signed with Falcons)

Agreed

I was pretty bummed when Ian signed with the 49ers. He’s a great guy and I’m happy for him for getting signed, but I honestly expected the Colts to make a move for him, and was dissapointed when I heard he would not be a Colt.
