Anyone else like Clements to the Colts?
I've seen a lot of Niners games over the years because I always end up surrounded by their fans. Wouldn't it be nice to have a corner like Nate Clements to play opposite Jerraud Powers? The guy racked up 82 tackles last year 3 INTs (one where he lost the game for the 49ers by fumbling when he could have gone out of bounds and won the game), 3 FFs and a sack. The guy is a monster in the run game which could be exactly what's needed. He'll probably require a contract that's too big for the Colts to swallow, but it's an intriguing thought. Oh! and he's a Big 10 Alum (Ohio State). Seems like a perfect fit.

Don't forget Whitner is still available too...
If 18 signs for less then maybe we have room to add one of these two guys?

Colts won’t bring in a top or above average corner .. our combination of CBs are one of our strengths .. I think we will get Donte Whitner though … a Safety rotation of Bethea, Bullet, Lefeged, and Whitner would give us another strength … the only FAs we NEED are another safety and a few good and big DTs … It would be nice to be in the Moss sweepstakes though
If we are going to spend the $$
Why not sign a DT instead of a 3rd safety…
Keep a UFA
With Mookie, Moala, and Nevis they just need a filler at DT. Sign one of the meaty UFAs and let them learn at 2nd string. Having a great tackling safety and/or corner makes a HUGE difference in the run game.
I started watching other teams last year and it seemed like the Colts weren’t far off from other teams when it came to letting RBs get past the line. The main difference I saw was poor tackling at the 2nd level (i.e. Francisco.)
The DTs aren’t that big of a problem. Tackling is. We’ve seen where the Colts go from giving up 250 yds rushing to 40yds. The DTs are always the same. The difference is tackling….

Watch film...
Arm tackles were the problem during the week 1 loss to the Texans. Watch the teams the colts face. Their LBs and DBs close on the ball and tackle. Indy closes, but struggles to tackle.

Gonna have to agree with Mark
Sure we don’t have studs at defensive tackles that will get negative rushing yards on a play a lot, but they hold there ground and when the ball carrier should be stopped, a linebacker or francisco either is whiffing a tackle, or getting dragged forward for 5 yards once he’s already ran for five… Still would love Clements, just what we need for our bad run defense is a great run support corner with good cover skills. With Hayden staying though…. Don’t see it.

thats the problem
holding ground means nuthing if they are already got decent yardage
I agree with Whitner. Nice rotation at Safety. Need to drop Hayden and use his cap space to sign Cody and Fields as run stoppers. A rotation at DT with them, Moala, Mookie, and Nevis would be awesome. Then the defense would be something to brag about. Also need to resign Addai and Charlie Johnson on offense. I could see Moss if the lost Addai and cut Gonzo, White, and Garcon.
WHAT?!?!?!
There is all sorts of craziness in what you just said. Garcon is currently the future for the Colts at WR, Addai is not necessary (I’d like to keep him, but not for much $$$), Moss is a bum (proved it on 3 teams last year), HAYDEN ONLY WOULD CLEAR UP $2.5M IN CAP SPACE. The way his contract is structured his future bonuses would come due immediately and count against the cap. Give it up. Cutting Hayden does not help. Gonzo is still a great threat and has been hit with 3 freak injuries in the last 3 years (remember how effective he was in the SB run? and how short we were at WR last year when people were getting hurt?) White may be expendable, but he’s a cheap option.
I hope your comment was sarcasm…

Shaun Cody was resigned by the Texans.
And Fields is a 3-4 NT that isn’t even any good at that. You really want the backup NT for the league’s worst defense?

So why is no one talking about
Kris Jenkins whom got released from the Packers? I like him over Mebane and everyone was dying for Mebane after cofield signed elsewhere.
I like Jenkins as a Colt because
there are multiple places to use him. He is a strong, big DT/DE with above average skills and had a breakout season last year with 7-8 sacks. The issue could be his contract heft, but that largely depends on the market for defensive linemen. He can move around, isn’t a set and concrete technique and has the skill set to find the quarterback, handle multiple blockers, and command some attention. If, big IF, we are looking for someone on the defensive front, Jenkins could be a good fit because the Colts love versatility in their players. His stats show well for him, as well as the film I’ve seen. Also, he is a proven run stopper and has experience/success in both 3-4/4-3 schemes. It would seem to be a great option.

Another interesting option, though less exciting and lacking versatility, would be Aubrayo Franklin from the Niners. A solid, run stopping NT for a 3-4 team that probably doesn’t transition extremely well, but would be a run stopper in the middle.
He's an eagle now...

Sadly...
He wasn’t when I made the suggestion, but his versatility and interior defense would have really helped this team.

I think that could be a great thing.
Clements being a veteran CB could teach some of our younger DB’s some great things, while keeping up solid results on the field.
