Some conflicting information reported on NFL.com - and other news outlets. Robert Mathis apparently would like a new long term contract when he returns to the Colts. He's currently under his last year so of course he wants to ink something longer term. What's conflicting is that the NFL Network reported that he would hold out for a new contract, and not report to training camp. This article quotes him as saying he will show up and will play.
Like most Colts players, I've always thought of Mathis as a stand-up guy. It would seem that while he wants to sign up for more years as a Colts (and I'd like him to do that as well), he will play without a longer term contract.
With Jerry Hughes not playing as expected, Freeney and Mathis form the bookends of one of the most respected pass rushing defense in the NFL - and they form the cornerstone that allows us to sit back in a Cover 2, and create a formidable pass rush on 3rd-and-long.
