2011 NFL Preseason Job Approval Rating: Bill And Chris Polian
For this next question, I decided to lump together Bill and Chris Polian because even though Bill has stepped into the background, he isn't officially retired. What we do know if the draft was Chris's, and he has been the more vocal 'face' of the front office this year. While the rookies this year look very promising, it's also important to remember how bad Jerry Hughes and Mike Pollak have played. Also, Donald Brown is in year three, and he still isn't starting.
That said, What do you think of the job Chris and Bill Polian are doing as heads of the front office?

I voted Good,but . . . . .
. . . .if the Colts make it to the Super Bowl and win it in Lucas Oil Stadium, I could see them rising to Great status. For the simple reason that they would have done a magnificent job of navigating their way to that conclusion. The top to bottom seeming quality of this year’s draft, where all five selections appear headed to significant roles on the squad this season, is a definite feather in Chris Polian’s cap. Recent disappointing 1st rounders, I agree, are cause for de-merits and a lower ranking. But, they have made an awful lot of good/great finds in lower rounds and UDFA’s. I also like the UFA’s they have signed this summer (Sims, Harris, Anderson and Beekman). I think lots of teams would love to have the Polians in their front offices.
I find it difficult to lump both together...
and discount the past totally. I can’t get out of my head how bad this franchise was before Bill and how happy I was when he took over.
While Chris has been more vocal, I still think Bill is pulling some of the strings behind the scenes. Generally, Chris still has some things to learn and needs time to evolve into a leader. I generally like what I have seen so far, but I want to see it sustained.
Bleedin' Blue for as long as I can remember. Can you believe we get to be fans while our team has the greatest QB of all time?!?!?!
"Chris still has some things to learn and needs time to evolve . . ."
I very much agree with your quite thoughtful points. Sometimes, I think Indy fans have been spoiled with the long run of stability and excellence by this franchise. I have followed Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts teams for over 47 years, and the Polian era of running this franchise has been far and away the most consistently successful. Is there more they could/should be achieving? No doubt. But a ton of teams and their fans would surely trade places and teams.

Not totally Brown's fault -
Seriously, he’s a speed rusher with after burners and down hill running. True that he didn’t hit the pocket hard like say Rhodes, but in the open field, he’s a barn burner, IHMO. COnversely, when three D lineman attack him in the back field, what’s he supposed to do?

Good
Look, we could be stuck with situations like the Bengals, Lions, Browns, and even the worst one of all, the Bills..
So as far as GM work goes, I voted Good. Have they made some missteps and mistakes? Sure, who hasn’t.
Also, the comments about Brown and Hughes are getting extremely old. Hughes is a pure pass rusher trying to transition from college to the pros and he’s playing behind arguably the best DE tandem in the NFL. How exactly is he supposed to get any real reps against quality competition to see how he’s grown? How is he supposed to do that when the Colts were practically a mash unit of people who could play 4 spots last year? As for Brown, I doubt even any of the top 5 RB’s in the league would run for 1000 yards behind the line we put on the field last year. Despite that, Brown played pretty well and showed the EXACT things we drafted him for…..taking it to the house on one cut moves…
I ain’t saying Hughes doesnt deserve criticism, but it’s gotten old and you make it seem like it’s just easy to do it. It’s not.

I'd rather vote separately
1998 – 2006 Polian – Good
2007 – 2010 Bill Polian – bad
200? – present Chris Polian – Fair/not sure yet
I Agree
I think Chris’s draft will end up very good. Got my fingers crossed !

draft picks should turn out to be good
hope the 3 free agents can contribute because Colts could use their help ,,,,,, and they should have taken Safford (an Indiana guy, could have easily seen him play multiple times in college),,,,, over
Hughes and they should make Pollack a 3rd stringover

Hughes
A lot of guys wanted Safford ( me included ) based on need. If Hughes turns out to be all- pro ( I’m laughing hysterically), it was the wrong choice because of NEED.

Fans are confused with "low risk/high reqard" label
Eating an apple is low risk/high reward. Signing other team’s crappy players is low risk/LOW reward.
