Another Early Guess As To The 2011 Colts Week One Depth Chart
This is another early guess as to what the 53-man roster will be for Week One. Keep in mind, for these guesses, I'm tossing out there what I think the 53 should be, not what I think Chris Polian will do. Trying to guess what the Polians will do is an exercise in futility. It will also drive you insane and make you hate the cruel game that is life.
Last week's guess is here.
If you agree, disagree, or partly agree or disagree with a few tweaks, comment away. For now, here's another very early guess as to the 2011 Colts 53 man roster.
QB: Peyton Manning, Dan Orlovsky
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Devin Moore
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Free Agent*
TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Justin Snow
LT: Anthony Castonzo, Jeff Linkenbach
LG: Joe Reitz, Jacques McClendon
OC: Jeff Saturday, Jake Kirkpatrick
RG: Kyle DeVan, Josh Beekman
RT: Ryan Diem, Ben Ijalana
Defense after jump...
RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes
NT: Antonio Johnson, Ricardo Mathews, Free Agent**
UT: Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Tommie Harris
LE: Robert Mathis, Jamaal Anderson
WILL: Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims
MIKE: Gary Brackett, Adrian Moten
SAM: Pat Angerer, Philip Wheeler
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kevin Thomas, Chris Rucker
CB: Kelvin Hayden, Justin Tryon, Jacob Lacey
FS: Antoine Bethea, Free Agent****
SS: Melvin Bullitt, Joe Lefeged
P: Pat McAfee
Kick return is Devin Moore. Punt returns are Free Agent WR.

*Someone like T.J. Houshmandzadeh here.
**I still think a veteran nose tackle is needed. Last year, the Colts entered Week One with only one nose tackle listed. It was disaster. If they do that again those year, the Texans will clobber them, again.
***I don't know if the Colts have seen anyone they like so far at FS. I know I haven't. Thus, after cutdown day, the Colts sign a vet here.

Other notes are Curtis Painter and Mike Pollak cut. This probably won't happen because pride and ego often factor into the roster than objective evaluation, but I can dream. Painter and Pollak do not deserve roster spots. They are bad football players, and anyone who argues otherwise is likely on the Colts payroll.
I think Adrian Moten might have unseated Cody Glenn.
I think the Colts will now re-sign Kelvin Hayden.
Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Please discuss.

I like your picks, here are my changes
RB – Addai, Carter, Evans, Moore (Brown cut, I can dream too)
RG – Diem, Devan
RT – Ijalana, Linkenbach/Diem (Link would start if available, otherwise Diem would move back to RT and one of the backup guards would move to starting RG)
NT – Mookie, Tank Johnson, Mathews (in a rotation I think he still can offer something)
SAM – Conner, Wheeler
MIKE – Brackett, Angerererer
WILL – Sims, Moten
Brown wont be cut
He’s shown flashes of what he can do when healthy. I love love Diem at starting RG! Is Tank a true NT? If so, i ll take him. I’m in the small group that thinks Sims will take over Conner too. (atleast on passing situations)
KEEP DREAMING.......
No way Brown gets cut. He will be given another year.

No way on brown
We just need the depth. Remember last year we had addai, brown and hart go down and had to bring in James and Rhodes. Brown knows the system and has a first round draft pick contract. He’s not going anywhere.
However, if Joe stays healthy, I can see Carter getting more carries than Brown.

Brown probably won't be cut this year
But I think Carter and Evans offer more as ball carriers and as backfield blockers than Brown ever will. Like I said, I can dream.
No way.
Cut DB? That’d be great… He’d go sign with someone and end up being the next Edgerrin knowing our luck. The guy has the potential to be a bad ass, and he has certainly showed his ability (Jags home game last year). He deserves more time, imo.
My blood-type is Colts and FORD blue.
you have a better chance
of being the next brad pitt than donald brown has of being the next edge. i wish colt fans would just accept that donald is just a very average rb.

The holes Brown ran through
any RB could’ve run through. He did ok in those games but he has a lot to prove, a lot of bad plays to erase.
It would be kinda nice
But i doubt Hayden re-signs. I know D Moore is our KR guy but i think Spann or Evans may take his roster spot. Maybe the Colts dont care to have the “best” KR on the team with the new kickoff rule and increase of touchbacks. Maybe they will settle for a “reliable” returner and keep the better RB.
Also
With the new rules, there really is no need for a return man. Teams have been routinely stopped inside the 20 this preseason on kickoff return attempts. Moore is nothing special, I would rather see Blair White doing touchbacks than risk a holding call or injury on a botched kickoff return attempt.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
No return man?
Watch the other team kick it to the goal line, and force Pey Pey to drive 90 yards.

I'm in agreement.
I think you have hit it pretty close.
I would also agree that Pollack and Painter will both be on this roster come opening day and we can all get pissed yet again this year that at least two roster spots were dictated by ego or pride rather then performance.

Hayden
I read the Redskins completely lost interest in Hayden after his visit with them. Chicago doesn’t seem in a hurry either. I thought he’d get a lot more interest than this. I agree he will re-sign here. I wonder how that would affect the cap.
Um.....Hayden was cut?
Why would a cut player resign with a team? I don’t get it.
Because
He was cut bc his contract was too much for his talent. Now if he goes around and talks to other franchises and they won’t give him the money he wants, he would probably rather come back to indy where he knows the scheme and can win 12 games and have a shot at another Superbowl. This of course would be for less money.

The guy
Made plays last season and knows the playbook in a short season. If gonzo gets hurt again and Collies career ends, we need that 5th WR and it seems the Colts are done in free agency.

WR
Has anyone seen anything about Blair White’s injury? My suspicion is that they would like to keep him on PUP as long as possible as insurance if Gonzo or Collie go down. They usually only keep 4 WRs active unless either one is hurt or the fifth has a major role on special teams. I expect the hope is to go with four (or maybe Taj Smith as a special teams ace) with Blair White on PUP until either they need him or a roster spot opens mid-season.
You can now add Blair White
to the list of WR’s on this team that can not be counted on to stay healthy and play for this team.

My depth chart
QB: Peyton Manning, Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter (yes, 3 QBs for first time since Painter’s rookie year due to Manning’s uncertainty) (3)
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Devin Moore (KR/PR, why not?) (4)
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Stokely (5)
TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Tyson DeVree (I like his size and upside and without Gijon, we are thin at blocking TE given Eldridge’s inability to stay healthy) (4)
LT: Anthony Castonzo, Jeff Linkenbach (2)
LG: Joe Reitz, Jacques McClendon (2)
OC: Jeff Saturday (no Jake Kirkpatrick, he goes to PS since Pollak & DeVan can play center) (1)
RG: Kyle DeVan, Mike Tepper (go watch Mike Tepper run block, he seems to be starter material to me for our O-line) (2)
RT: Ryan Diem, Ben Ijalana (2)
Defense:
RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes (2)
NT: Antonio Johnson, Ollie Ogbu (replaces Ricardo Mathews, he played better, IMO) (2)
UT: Fili Moala (no Tommie Harris, he will be cut), Drake Nevis will play NT on passing downs and UT on run downs (he is definitely close to 310 lbs based on what he showed me), Eric Foster (3)
LE: Robert Mathis, Jamaal Anderson/Tyler Brayton, John Chick (3)
WILL: Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims (2)
MIKE: Gary Brackett, Adrian Moten (2)
SAM: Pat Angerer, Philip Wheeler (2)
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kevin Thomas, Justin Tryon, Jacob Lacey, Chris Rucker (5)
FS: Antoine Bethea, Mike Newton (2)
SS: Melvin Bullitt, Joe Lefeged (2)
ST:
P: Pat McAfee (1)
K: Adam Vinatieri (1)
LS: Justin Snow (1)
Ogbu
I missed parts of the game b/c of weather but I saw nothing positive from Ogbu. Not a great game from Mathews either but he did have a good 3rd down stop in the backfield.
He was double teamed all the time
Ogbu was at least good enough to demand a double team consistently, IMO. That is the main positive I took out of it. Like I said, it is just 1 game. Hopefully Ricardo improves tremendously over the next 3 games.
not all the time but some for sure
ogbu got much better when the rams started bringing in the 3rd stringers
I liked Tepper too!
Best Oline last week was Castonzo, Reitz, DeVan, Tepper, Ijalana. What do you know, the left side of that line is now starting.
Go back and watch.
Stokley?
Isn’t he on the seahawks?
DeVree is an interesting option, Mike McNeill showed some great hands receiving against St. Louis, but with Clark and Tamme already in that role, there’s a good chance they go with the blocker over the receiver.
Interesting to guess that they wouldn’t carry a 10th O-lineman…that’s definitely a possibility. However, you say that pollak and devan can play C (so can McClendon I think), but pollak isn’t on your roster…
I agree with your thinking that Harris will get cut, and that Moten makes the roster over cody glenn.
I question Mike Newton in as the #2 FS though, but it’s probably a toss up at this point between 3-4 players for that backup spot. Maybe a signing after initial cuts will be the real answer there.
The sad reality is that if Bethea goes down, this defense is in serious serious trouble
by LeftNutForAStarCenter on Aug 16, 2011 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions
I would like to see more of Tyson DeVree
He wears #80 and did not see as much time as Mike McNeil (#47). Tyson DeVree looked heavier than the 245 lbs 6’6" listed on the colts.com website. Then I found this article where he has bulked to 260 lbs:
http://www.mlive.com/sports/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2011/02/hudsonville_native_tyson_devre_1.html
I liked one catch that he made, showed me some good hands on that. He is one I would watch more closely because if we have to run more in the playoffs, we need that extra blocking TE, IMO.
Also, when I said Pollak and DeVan can play center, I essentially meant that when you have other utility players that can play center, it is a waste of a roster spot to have a rookie to be a back up center (Kirkpatrick) over others who are more familiar with the playbook unless the rookie plays lights out. I just do not see that happening.
Last year, we carried 10 O-linemen and Ugoh & Linkenbach made the roster mainly because CJ was injured. Otherwise, we would have gone with 9 O-linemen. That is why I feel this year, we will have 3 QBs, due to Manning’s injury concerns and we will see both Painter & Orlovsky go against first team defenses this year with more playing time in the next few games.
If we can get Darren Sharper to bolster our safety corp., I will be happy and our secondary won’t need any more additions, IMO. Heck, it is the year of 1 year contracts, add Sharper to the fold as well :-).
by chad72 on Aug 16, 2011 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Sharper would be nice actually
He’s one of the few FAs out there that I would actually like to see the Colts pursue. I don’t really even know why Colts keep signing guys like Brayton. He cannot possibly be better than Hughes and certainly has a lower ceiling.
I think we’ll probably end up with 9 linemen as well, as long as they can find 5 guys they are comfortable with. I’m hoping the line shakes out as something like Castonzo/Reitz/Saturday/DeVan/Linkenbach. I wish they would try ijalana out at RG if they don’t think he’s ready to play at RT. DeVan is serviceable at best, and I think Ijalana is just too talented not to have somewhere on the line.
I think the number of QBs the Colts keep will really be a reflection of Manning’s health. If he’s really going to be 100% at the start of the season, then there should be no reason to keep a third.
by LeftNutForAStarCenter on Aug 17, 2011 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions
Like most of that
I don’t think they will keep 3 QBs but it is possible.
I don’t think D Moore adds any value as a KR with the new rules but at this point they have no one else that would do it unless he only did touchbacks.
I completely agree with your thought process on Ogbu vs Mathews.
Even after his solid game against St. Louis I still don’t like Wheeler but about 75% of that is due to his hair. Cut your damn hair and focus on football!!
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
Linebackers?
Does Triplett have any chance of making the team/ Is the position just too deep. He seemed to show some progress against the Rams.
At this point I don't think he does
I think Moten is a better player and brings more to the table as a really good cover linebacker (where conner is severely lacking). I would take Moten over Triplett

I'm surprised no one commented on Guard depth.
I would love to see a Waters or Essex on the Guard list over Beekman. I know it’s not the norm for the Colts to bring in veteran linemen, but boy do we need them.
Bleedin' Blue for as long as I can remember. Can you believe we get to be fans while our team has the greatest QB of all time?!?!?!
I would think either of those two would be instant starters
They would be a significant upgrade over our current options at G
it's been talked about
but i have just accepted the fact that the colts are just going to sign a bunch of hacks for very little money…..

Based on the updates about practice rosters..
I’d put the Offensive Line as (10):
LT – Castonzo/Linkenbach
LG – Reitz/McClendon
C – Saturday/Kirkpatrick
RG – DeVan/Beekman
RT – Ijalana/Diem
Ideally Pollak would be gone, replaced with the signing of Josh Beekman.
as for the skill positions on offense:
QB – Manning, Painter (2)
RB – Addai, Carter, Brown, Spann (4)
WR – Wayne, Garcon, Collie, Gonzo, Gilreath, White (6)
TE – Clark, Tamme, Eldridge, (3)
Offense – 25.
Defensive Line (9)
RE – Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes (2)
NT – Antonio Johnson, Ollie Ogbu, Ricardo Mathews (3)
UT – Drake Nevis (will start over Moala by week 3 I’d say), Moala (2)
LE – Robert Mathis, Jamaal Anderson (2)
Linebackers (7) –
WILL – Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims
MIKE – Gary Brackett, Cody Glenn
SAM – Pat Angerer, Phil Wheeler
7th LB – Adrian Moten
CB – Powers, Tryon, Hayden*, Thomas, Lacey, Rucker (6) – *I like the idea of bringing back Hayden if he’s willing. Althought I don’t know that it will happen. Otherwise it’ll be a FA or possibly one of cornelius brown or brandon king
FS – Bethea, ?? – I really don’t think any of Newton/Afalava/Vaughn/Caldwell provide viable options, but is there even a better option out there at FS?
SS – Bullitt, Lefeged
Defense – 24 players
ST: McAfee, Vinatieri, Justin Snow (3)
that’s a total of 52 players.
I think the colts go with just 2 QBs, Tommie Harris doesn’t make the roster. I think the 53rd player is another DB or returner, or potentially a 6th interior defensive linemen, although the Colts could very well roll with just 5.
I don’t think the Colts will sign TJ Housh, mainly because I don’t think TJ has anything left. He turns 34 in september. He had a couple of brutal drops for baltimore in the playoffs if i remember correctly.
More on Hayden: The problem is with his situation and the Colts in general. He refused to renegotiate his contract for the sake of the team, and the team cut him. He doesn’t seem like the kind of character who would be willing to swallow his pride and come back to the Colts with his tail between his legs. I understand that there have been release-and-resign situations in the past, but none quite like Hayden’s. This was a guy who got paid to be the #1 CB, and held that spot. If he comes back, he’s probably what? The 3rd CB? Making 3rd CB money? I just don’t think he would do it. Too much pride on his part.
The linebacking situation is one of the more interesting positions for the Colts. Aside from the obvious Conner, Angerer, Brackett starting 3, there’s a ton of depth at the linebacking spots. Glenn has been a standout in special teams in the past, and has seen spot work in the defense. Sims was signed to push conner for a starting spot, but he’s out right now and we haven’t seem him in game situations. This defense requires GAP discipline, something which Sims apparently struggles with. I think he’ll make the roster, but it’s no sure thing. Wheeler is so inconsistent that we can never really be sure what the FO and coaches are thinking in his case. Meanwhile, several others have shown some decent ability. Moten I think is going to stick on this roster. Conner is a terrible coverage LB and Moten’s coverage skill is is greatest strength. Triplett has also shown flashes of ability, but i think he’s the 8th LB in depth right now and just isn’t going to make the roster (unless the Colts elect to go with Triplett over Glenn).
Regarding Tommie Harris, sidelined by another injury, I just don’t think the team will have enough faith in his ability to remain healthy and productive (which he was not in that first preseason game) to keep a roster spot for him. He’s the most likely of the “big three” signings to go IMO.

wow, I really can't count...that's 26 players on defense

Painter needs to go!
Looks good to me, BBS. I agree with your signings and arrangement. Painter certainly needs to hit the road. I guess the Colts upper tier think he supersedes any other backup due to his “seniority”. Well, that may be the case when it comes to “knowing the system”, but if you can’t accurately throw a 10 yard pass and continually choke and choke and choke when it’s your time to make something happen, you need to get the hell on! I’m so tired of seeing “Painter” on the depth chart every Sunday. I don’t care if the guy EVER plays, he is to big of an embarrassment to be even be on the roster.
My blood-type is Colts and FORD blue.
Ricardo Mathews
SUUUUUCKS.
Would like to see anyone else but him. If Mookie went down or Ricardo otherwise had any significant playing time, the run defense is in big trouble.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
Until further notice
I don’t think our run defense is good enough to go from what it already is to “in big trouble”. There’s only so far past bottom of the barrel you can go.
Touche
As a footnote, I mean the run defense will go from me hoping they will make a play to me knowing they have no shot of making a play.

I think the list is pretty good, BBS. On the O-line, I think the Colts will only carry 9, and I think Pollack will make it. I also think/hope DIem will shfit to RG, which is based upon the optimism that BI progresses so that he can start at RT. I just don’t think anyone else on the Colts roster has the athleticism to provide blocking against a good left end, and this is our best shot of protecting #18.
Beekman and Kirkpatrick probably don’t make the squad without an injury, though they may need to stay by the telephone.
Despite the additions, I remain very concerned regarding the defense. The UT position appears to be better than it has in a long time, and I like the potential improvement to the run defense by the addition of Jamaal Anderson on run downs.
But our NT “group” is far below average for NFL starters, and our secondary appears held together by bandaids and used chewing gum. Yes, I understand we have a few good pieces – Bethea, Lacey, etc. But these guys aren’t loaded with talent or athleticism. These guys all are the type who work very hard (which is great) and try to play within the system (which is great), but they are not playmakers, and our depth is thin.
Of course, the linebackers corp doesn’t include a playmaker either, but at least the position seems deeper.
I know NFL teams aren’t built on the premise of having 11 playmakers on the field at a time. I get that. I also understand the reality of injuries. To have a realistic possibility of extraordinary success, the Colts really need to add quality depth at NT and DB.
I’m in the minority, I suppose, but I would be really happy to see Hayden and Jackson rejoing the secondary. Though Jackson’s been prone to injury (and slowed by injury), I think he would provide good depth at safety.
by Voice of the Profit on Aug 17, 2011 8:28 AM EDT reply actions
Jackson is on the Eagles
How would he rejoin the secondary? He also just had sports hernia surgery and is out for up to 8 weeks. Ridiculous.
In terms of Hayden though, I think there’s definitely a possibility of him making a return, but as I mentioned in other posts, I just don’t think he would be willing to make a return. It would be a pride issue more than anything. He spurned the Colts’ request to renegotiate his contract, then the Colts just cut him and he hasn’t been able to find anyone anywhere willing to pay him anything close to what he thinks he’s worth. I just don’t think he is the kind of character who would now come back to the Colts with his tail between his legs…
In any case, I agree that we’re not very deep on defense. We have players, but not ones that provide real depth. Lacey is just not a player I have a lot of faith in, and Kevin Thomas is essentially a rookie. This leaves really only 2 corners that I have any sort of confidence in, and that scares me.
Mookie is capable, but unless Ogbu or Mathews can be legit players, we’re dangerously thin at NT as well. Safety is probably an even bigger concern. While Bethea is durable, behind him and Bullitt right now we seem to have undrafted rookie Joe Lefeged and nobody else that has shown much indication of being a capable NFL calibre player…
I disagree somewhat about the linebackers corp. I think there Sims is a playmaker, but he’s also undisciplined. Wheeler is of a similar ilk. If both these guys can get better at gap discipline and work on their coverage skills, they both have the potential for good things. Conner is a huge liability in coverage, but UDFA Adrian Moten has showed a lot in camp and looked very good against the Rams. I’d be extremely disappointed of Moten was not on the opening day
Also, based on some practice notes I’ve been reading, the Colts ran a few plays where Jerry Hughes stood up between the tackle and guard (like a rushing linebacker in a 3-4), and got great penetration, while getting stoned on several plays playing from a down-stance. Just something to look for.
