Water Is Wet, Sky Is Blue, Anthony Gonzalez Is Hurt

First off, I'm on record with praising Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez for sticking to his principles and not resorting to cheating when it came to rehabbing from injuries the last two years. While players like Rodney Harrison are seemingly rewarded for blatantly violating NFL rules and cheating to win games by using Human Growth Hormones (HGH), Gonzo chose rehab on the straight and narrow.

Personally, I respect that.

However, the knock on Gonzo is that his body simply is not tough enough for the rigors of NFL life. Knee injures and other alignments have cost Gonzo two full seasons, and if one were to objectively evaluate his value since being drafted in the first round in 2007, you'd have to say he's a disappointment. He simply cannot stay healthy, and in the coldhearted business of pro football, injured players are useless players.

Thus, it's very disappointing to hear that, once again, Gonzo is hurt. This time it's a hamstring. He did not practice yesterday, and his availability for Friday night against the Redskins is uncertain.

If you follow Phil Wilson on Twitter, you know this latest setback for Gonzo has him annoyed as well. Also held out of practice yesterday was Austin Collie, but it was not for concussion-related issues. His knee is bothering him, and the rest seems precautionary.

Perhaps the same caution is the reason Gonzo is sitting. Who knows. What we do know is Gonzalez must stay healthy for the entire 2011 season. He cannot miss games. If he does, his career in the NFL is likely over.

Housh or Moss

They just need to go ahead and get Housh or Moss under contract… he is going to get hurt. Simple as that.

I like gonzo just as much as the next guy on here, but this is just rediculous at this point.

Neither of those WRs sounds good to me, but Moss was done last year.

really??

u mean the moss who blew by darrell revis like he was a 4th string conerback???

Moss was isolated in ne because the pats didnt want to pony up the dollars…he was being used as a decoy which got him upset…just like REGGIE WAYNE got upset when peyton didnt try to get him the ball when revis was blanketed over him…

moss wasnt a good fit in Minnesota with brad childress and he had a 5th string qb in tennessee….

moss is far from finished

by kingjaffe on Aug 18, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

NO

The Moss that lost interest soon after that Revis play and was released by the Pats, then Vikings, and then the Titans.

Just think logically about it….this offense is about route running and reading defenses. Moss does neither of those well. Moss used to be able to run by everyone and out jump everyone, but he can barely do either of those anymore on maybe 25% of the plays that he is actually interested enough to be involved in.

If the Colts needed a WR and Moss was the guy they went for, then I will cheer like hell for him, but I just don’t see either happening.

moss was traded by the pats and released by minnesota..

moss wasnt going to fit in minnesota and he had rusty smith throwing to him in tennessee….

RUSTY SMITH…

Randy Moss is a better route runner and reader of defenses than anyone gives him credit for…

even belicheck gave him praise..

moss game is more mental than people realize..he dosent even tip off a db when the ball is bein thrown his way.

thats fits in perfectly with the colts offense…

2007 worst colts draft EVER!!!

1st rd – Gonzo
2nd rd – Ugoh
3rd round – Dante hughes
3rd round – Q. Piticock
5th rd – Roy Hall
5th rd – Michael Coe
2008 – 1st rd pick – NOTHING! Traded away for UGOH!

Another outstanding draft by Polian.

Forgot to add

2008 – 2nd rd pick – Mike Frickin Pollack.

Outstanding 8 picks right there….

Roy Hall might have been pretty good...

…at least as a special teams player. The hit he applied on that O lineman that more or less ended his career was one of the most violent hits I’ve ever seen. If your career is gonna end due to injury, at least go out with a hit like that…daaaaammmmnnnn!

Gonzos career may end because he’s running untouched, the guys Joe Glass. Sad but true.

Why not just sign Housh

Let’s not kid ourselves – either Collie or Gonzalez will miss time this season. We all hope they can stay healthy, but history is not on our side.

Even if the team was high on Blair White, he has yet to practice this year, and can’t be relied upon. I don’t even know who’d be next up on the depth chart…Taj Smith? Please, I’d rather Housh be Collie’s immediate backup, since he can at least stay healthy and get open.

Gonzo's a great player,

but, I, too, am beginning to believe he just can’t take the contact of the NFL. And, I truly worry for Collie, not just his football career, but his long-term health. I have a gut feeling he isn’t going to make it too far into the season, before a big hit sidelines him. Hopefully, Dallas Clark can make it through the season.

by Ayrshire on Aug 18, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

you cant even say Gonzo is a "great" player

when has he ever been great?? maybe he COULDVE been great if not for injuries, but every 1st rd pick COULD be great. Hes basically useless, hes the WR version of Bob Sanders

by bigpony on Aug 18, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Gonzo was never great

He was a solid player with some potential (never thought he was athletic enough to be great). Now he’s been hurt each of the past 2 seasons, and has opened up camp with some small injuries.

If you want the Colts to rely on him as the 4th WR (behind a 3rd WR who is one concussion away from retirement), then go right ahead. But it’s a big mistake, and we learned our lesson last year – and that was with a healthy Blair White, who hasn’t even practiced this off-season.

anyone remember E.G Green?

In his rare game day appearances he did make some nice catches.. then would immediately get hurt. Seems Gonzalez is going that same route. A shame as I think he has a lot of ability. I won’t knock polian for picking him. Gonzo didn’t have any major injury issues before the draft. That is just one of those things that happen.

by bluegirl on Aug 18, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Housh is a healthy version of Gonzo.

I believe Housh could provide the same role Gonzo will provide during the game. I say, if Gonzo is actually hurt and misses any games, TJ Housh can fill a role for us. Also, if COllie is hurt, I see Housh as a valuable replacement for him too. Housh can give us some depth and versitility.

He would actually be the perfect replacement, not Housh or Moss

I am not sure why everyone says Moss

Maybe he is not Brett Favre and is really retired. He has stated he does not want a one year low paying contract and I do not remember hearing him saying he would come back to play with PM.

Feeling like we need a voice of reason again..

Guys are gonna have tweaks and injuries all year. Unless it’s reported that it is a serious injury wheteby Gonzo misses a lot of time, lets not get worked up and write whole articles about it. Probably precautionary. It is pre-season after all. Let’s all take a deep breath and relax lol

by ColtKing on Aug 18, 2011 1:14 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   2 recs

Gonzo

Deserves at least a chance to make into the season. Guys will get banged up, bruised even in practices and preseason. As long as he’s contributing quality time when he is playing or needed to play, I think it’s too early to worry about it. It is after all preseason.

Having said that, BBS is indeed correct. This guy needs to contribute and he needs to show he can be counted on reliably to do so. If he can’t, he’ll almost certainly get cut. I still stand on my prediction he’s most likely a final roster day cut, as I expect the Colts will most likely sign Housh. At this point, Housh is a much better and much more reliable option.

get rid of him try to trade him for a pick in next years draft

by genesis on Aug 18, 2011 3:49 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

In today's NFL

I don’t think you can reasonably expect guys not named Peyton Manning or Tom Brady to be healthy and start all 16 games. Over the course of the season guys are going to get nicked up here and there. I’d expect Collie, Gonzo, and Pierre to each miss 2-4 games over the course of the year. All we can hope for is minor injuries and that everyone be healthy come postseason time.

I’m certainly not opposed to adding some depth though whether it be Moss, TO, or Housh. Peyton will do his thing with any one of those guys. Although each guy has his negatives (I think all three are locker room cancer), TO would be the best fit for this team, just not sure of his health status currently. Moss can only run one route, and Housh will just get lost on the depth chart.

by MelvinFasterThanaSpeedingBullitt on Aug 18, 2011 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

What would be a reasonable trade for Gonzo ?

Guy hasnt played in two years. 5th to 7th rounder at best ? Not worth it in my opinion. So polian can draft another undersized injury prone fodder to fill a roster spot.

Have this discussion AFTER Gonzo misses significant regular season action

TJ could quite easily break his leg in week one, whilst Gonzo plays every game.

by braveheartcolt on Aug 18, 2011 6:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

we need a tall WR

iv said for years that if peyton had a big tall talented wr he would be unstoppable. as great as manning is, how many times over the years have we seen him just barely over throw harrison or wayne or garcon deep? i dont care who they sign, but id love to see manning have a 6’4 guy he can just throw it up for every now and then. i thought we shoulda went after plax. itd be just like our other FA pick ups, low risk, high potential. moss fits this mold, housh kinda does ( hes 6’2).

lets pray

i agree a real big, throw it up there and he’ll go get it guy would be huge … but Moss is washed up, Housh is a never was .. who’s left … nobody … Gonzo could bee good but unfortunately he apparently roomed with Bob Sanders … lets pray Gonzo heals and plays to his true ability … and here endth the prayer … actually .. prayer not endth … lets pray #18 gets back next week and practices and plays some in the last preseason game … another 3 -4 start isn’t what we need … amen.

by EatPrayColts on Aug 19, 2011 12:20 AM EDT reply actions

Come on

Can we finally friggin give up on this guy? Polian always over invests in somebody to try to justify drafting him high. Pride can be a terrible thing. The guy simply cannot stay healthy enough to play in the NFL. Cut our losses and move on.

by BieberFever on Aug 19, 2011 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

The thing is...

It’s not like we save much by cutting him. Same thing with Brown – they are both on their rookie contracts, which for a late-1st rounder, is fairly cheap.

I don’t trust the guy one bit, but WHEN healthy, he’s a solid player. We most definitely won’t re-sign him, but we don’t stand to gain much by cutting him, so long as we aren’t relying on him for week-to-week production.
