Third Guess As To The Colts 2011 53-Man Roster
Pardon me this morning if I don't immediately write about this Brett Favre silliness. I kind of had a plan for today's coverage, and I'm not going to stop it just because Colts owner Jim Irsay is goofing off on Twitter.
Speaking of goofing off, I re-evaluated the Colt roster this weekend and I now have my third guess as to what the 53-man roster will be. Just FYI: Rosters must get cutdown to 80 in one week.
Below are my estimated 53. If you agree, disagree, or partly agree or disagree with a few tweaks, comment away.
QB: Peyton Manning, Unsigned Veteran
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Javarris James
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Free Agent*
TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Justin Snow
LT: Anthony Castonzo, Michael Toudouze
LG: Joe Reitz, Jacques McClendon
OC: Jeff Saturday, Jake Kirkpatrick
RG: Ryan Diem, Kyle DeVan
RT: Jeff Linkenbach, Ben Ijalana
Defense after jump...
RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes
NT: Antonio Johnson, Ricardo Mathews, Ollie Ogbu
UT: Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Tyler Brayton
LE: Robert Mathis, Jamaal Anderson
WILL: Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims
MIKE: Gary Brackett, Adrian Moten
SAM: Pat Angerer, Philip Wheeler
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kevin Thomas, Chris Rucker
CB: Kelvin Hayden, Justin Tryon, Jacob Lacey
FS: Antoine Bethea, Free Agent**
SS: Melvin Bullitt, Joe Lefeged
P: Pat McAfee
Kick returns are Free Agent WR. Punt returns are Joe Lefeged.
***
As you can see, I still have Kelvin Hayden listed because I think he will re-sign with Indy. Tommie Harris is gone. I've watched Ollie Ogbu close, and he offers more now than Harris. Heck, Tyler Brayton offers more than Harris, and unlike Harris, Brayton can play three spots on the d-line. I was almost inclined to cut Jamaal Anderson, but I still think he can make the roster over Eric Foster. Anderson is a better DE than Foster, and Foster is simply not needed anymore as a pass rushing DT because of Drake Nevis.
I think Blair White gets IRed, or starts 2011 on PUP.

Pretty good guess...
I’d expect Moore (or Spann) to make the team as the 4th RB over Javarris James, since I doubt the Colts will trust a FA to handle the return duties.
I too, like Ogbu, but I also liked Harris in his few reps against the Rams (stopped a 3rd & short running play, drilled the QB a split second after the throw in about 10 snaps). If, and it’s a big IF, he gets healthy in time, I expect he’ll make it over Matthews.
I doubt the Colts sign anybody else. Guys like Housh, Pat Williams, Darren Sharper all make sense, but there’s absolutely no reason to wait this long into preseason to sign a veteran. It would take too long for them to learn the playbook, I doubt they’d have an immediate impact. Hayden does make some sense since he’s familiar, but I don’t really want him back.

I completely agree that a veteran WR or even any non-Painter QB seems like a long shot, but as usual, BBS confuses what he WANTS with actual, objective probability.
Then again, now that Jim Irsay has clearly lost what was left of his drug-addled mind, there’s no telling what bizarre roster moves might be made!

Don't pay attention to Irsay's tweets
Coltsider just published a story about it, and included the fact that Irsay’s plain simply flew over the Mississippi area, but never stopped. Bottom line: Irsay was never in Favre town, but simply playing with his followers. Whether it’s a positive sign that he’s now making light of our QB situation, or if he’s just drugged up and stupid, who knows. But don’t pay much attention to his tweets.

I totally agree, but...
…these wholly bizarre tweets are alarming whether or not there’s any truth to their content. The guy types and thinks like a pre-teen stoner, and yet he OWNS our NFL team and controls it destiny! In some weird way, I think his joking about tracking down Favre is even worse than if he really WERE pursuing the washed-up divo. For one thing, it shows his ide of humor is most people’s idea of nuttiness. For another, Irsay’s QB-related tweets mock and taunt his own team’s fans, like “oh, so you so you think you could pick better QBs than we did, huh? Okay, geniuses—-tell me who!” All just my opinion, of course :)

Yikes
I apologize for the above typos; I’m lost without an ‘edit’ function!

Ehh
If that is indeed the case – that he’s just joking around on twitter – I think it’s pretty funny. It just goes to show how ridiculous main-stream sports media (ESPN) and Twitter can be. Irsay is realizing this, and simply toying with them.
Like I said, if that’s the case, it’s pretty funny. Some people will (over)react to anything, and Irsay is simply proving that.

I see your point...
…but taunting his own fans about an understandably anxiety-provoking issue, and in his own uniquely “writes like a 12-year-old drug addict” sort of way, just seems odd to me. Because he’s rich and in a high status position, people refer to Irsay as merely eccentric; if he were poor, people would dismiss him as merely crazy!
by daydreambeliever on Aug 22, 2011 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions
I think he's both
Definitely a bit crazy….but some portions of the media (ESPN, some twitter followers) deserve some flaming for how craved they are for seeking out potential rumors or stories, especially ones that pertain to Brett Favre.

Too long to learn the playbook?
I agree with you as to most offensive skill players, but not for defensive tackles and safeties with Cover 2 experience.

Diem and Devan?
If Diem or Devan are starting right guards then Manning is f—cked.
Better move Mcclendon to RG.
I'm encouraged by Diem actually...
As long as it keeps him from playing Tackle. He has the size and strength that’s necessary to play inside, he just doesn’t have the foot speed or quickness to play outside at tackle. Plus, we don’t have any better options. Pollak should be cut. McClendon has been playing the left side, and hasn’t impressed. DeVan is meh – average but not great, Diem at least offers some experience to pair next to Link or Ijalana at RT.
www.Coltsider.com

Mcclendon hasn't impressed?
Is he allowing sacks? Is he not opening holes in the run game? What’s your definition of impressive?
As in he hasn't been better than Joe Reitz
who wasn’t even on the roster last year. McClendon has been ok at best. I think he’ll make the team as depth, but I’d tend to favor Diem at RG as he’s got game experience and he has the size and strength to be good on the inside. He’s just too slow now to be able to deal with outside rushers as a tackle.

Diem sucks
I don’t want Diem on any part of the line.
By the way has Diem even played RG yet in preseason yet?
No
He’s been at RG in practice for the past week or so, but they wanted to get him more reps before throwing him in game situation. Also, we have only young & inexperienced options at RT, who apparently weren’t/aren’t ready to be starting pre-season games…hence why Diem was still at RT against the Redskins.
www.Coltsider.com

I agree on Diem
As a right tackle, he’s not a good fit any more (and maybe never was). The lateral quickness and overall athleticism to play the RT position simply isn’t there.
But a different skill set is required to play RG, and I think Diem has it. He certainly did early in his career. If Diem is at RG and BI can beat out Linkenbach, I like this line.
by Voice of the Profit on Aug 22, 2011 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Not this preseason though
Didn’t DeVan have 2 false starts in the same series early in the Redskins game?
I am very concerned with the line but I hope they are dilligently working on fixing it during practice because they obviously don’t care about fixing it during actual (preseason) games.

My guesses
QB: Peyton Manning, Unsigned Veteran
I agree with your QB assessment. Neither backups are qualified and if the colts are going to have to start any games without Manning at center, then the need for a real QB is legitimate.
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Chad Spann
I still think Chad Spann gets the nod here, although Jarvarris James may be just as if not a bit more likely. Delone Carter looked amazing in the last pre-season game. He looks like he could be a real get.
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Blair White*
Is blair white gone for the season? What’s the nature of his injury? I think if he’s able to get healthy sooner than later he’ll be the choice, but otherwise if he’s IR-ed, then the colts will sign a FA or give longshot David Gilreath a chance
TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Justin Snow
This one seems like a no-brainer. Very little chance they keep a 4th TE (not counting snow), but if they do, I’d put my money on Tyson DeVree
LT: Anthony Castonzo, Mike Tepper
I like Tepper more than Toudouze, who simply hasn’t shown enough in a few years now of preseason to warrant keeping around.
LG: Joe Reitz, Jacques McClendon
Reitz has looked decent. I think this position is pretty much set in stone with these two as the rotation.
OC: Jeff Saturday, Mike Pollak
Unfortunately, the colts will keep Pollak. He was a lot better at center than he’s ever been at guard. I think he’ll stick as saturday’s primary backup.
RG: Ryan Diem, Kyle DeVan*
Because of Pollak sticking around, i’m not even sure the colts elect to keep DeVan…they generally carry 9 O-linemen (4 out of the last 5 years). And I think Pollak would get a spot over DeVan because he’s gotten more reps at C and has the draft pedigree that the Polians may not want to relinquish (unfortunately).
RT: Jeff Linkenbach, Ben Ijalana
Look for Ijalana to start by season-opener.
In regards to the o-line, if devan is retained, look for there to be no real depth behind castonzo at LT. I think the Colts go with 9 linemen and with link’s ability to play both sides (though not necessarily very well), the colts will reserve roster spots for more “important” positions.
Total Offense: 24
RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes
NT: Antonio Johnson, Ollie Ogbu, Ricardo Mathews
UT: Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Tyler Brayton/Eric Foster
LE: Robert Mathis, John Chick/Jamaal Anderson
The d-line is interesting. At this point, I’m rooting for John Chick. We’ve seen way more contribution from him than jamaal anderson (who has shown pretty much nothing). Ogbu has looked like a contributor, and Mathews a capable depth player. I think only two of Brayton/Foster and Chick/Anderson stick, and at this point I actually hope it will be Chick/Brayton.
WILL: Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims
MIKE: Gary Brackett, Adrian Moten
SAM: Pat Angerer, Philip Wheeler
These seem like no brainers. Moten is going to stick, and the FO would be insane to cut him at this point. He’s probably been the most impressive linebacker in preseason so far.
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kevin Thomas, Chris Rucker
CB: Justin Tryon, Jacob Lacey, ???
The colts continue to give Lacey the starting snaps for absolutely no discernable reason. He’s terrible. Why does he start? It seriously doesn’t make any sense. There was one first down thrown to him on a 3rd and 8 or something where Lacey gave so much of a cushion that when the receiver caught the ball 2-3 yards shy of the first down, lacey was 2-3 yards beyond the first down marker. Stop being garbage. Get this fool off the starting roster. Hopefully there’s someone on the roster or out there like Kelvin Hayden who the colts can pick up for depth. As it stands, I’d hope the depth chart at corner runs: Powers – Tryon – Thomas – Lacey – Rucker. Lacey is just not good.
FS: Antoine Bethea, Free Agent**
It’s scary how quickly the Colts went from having possibly the best defensive backfield a couple years
SS: Melvin Bullitt, Joe Lefeged
At this point I would bet pretty much any amount of money on Lefeged being the primary backup safety (at both positions honestly). He’s solid.
P: Pat McAfee
K: Adam Vinatieri
Kick returns are Free Agent WR. Punt returns are Joe Lefeged.
Total Defense: 28
That leaves one extra roster spot which could possibly be used by a return specialist…Someone like Devin Moore or David Gilreath

thats just way too long of a post
lost interest after the qb’s. Sorry man
Taj Smith
is not a good route runner. It’s for that reason that most ppl don’t see him as a viable receiver. At best he’s a special teamer and emergency fill-in receiver in the event that multiple receivers go down.
He’s physically gifted but simply hasn’t shown the mental game to be a viable NFL receiver. basically, I’d sooner trust him to block punts than catch passes…

My thoughts
I don’t think J Anderson will make the roster. The team knows they can count on Foster to be solid when needed.
I don’t like how DeVan has played this preseason, but the same can be said for just about everyone on the team. I think they will keep him though and it will be down to Pollack or Kirkpatrick for the last spot. I think they will keep 10 based on need for O line bodies if injuries mount.
I really want to see Sims get some action before the preseason is over. I want to see how he compares to Conner, who has been out of position A LOT which is very discouraging.
Agree 1000% on Lacey. It is mind boggling that he plays outside at all, let alone is the starter. His cushion, whether coached or just played that way, is the biggest reason why the team gives up so many 3rd down conversions and long drives. It is a guarantee that you can throw to his side and convert a 3rd down with little trouble. Powers gives very little room for error (but needs to work hard on his tackling unless he is just taking it easy since it’s preseason) but Lacey is just garbage.
I haven’t even noticed Tryon on the field. Is he injured or am I missing something?
One more thing, I am also not sure that Rucker will make the final 53, especially if they bring back Hayden.

nice to see Moten on there!
I think he deserves a spot, he plays hard
Unfortunately I still see Painter as the backup though. He must have some incriminating photos of the Irsays and Polians, they just cant let him go!!
the unknown????
What about the players we don’t know very much about?. I saw a #40 at linebacker….who’s that? #86 at tight end, and marshall williams is #14. Whoever runs the colts website isn’t updating these new players. I looked up williams after someone on here wrote about him in practice last week, and he seems pretty good. But, will he get a fair shot at the 5th wr slot.

Colts.com Roster
It’s terrible. Use this – it’s kept up to date really well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Indianapolis_Colts_roster
- is Vuna Tuihalamaka, impressed in camp last offseason too.
- is Michael Matthews, blocking TE who’s be in the league off and on for a few years
I agree, Williams looks decent!
Thanks. The colts website is the worse.

#14 Marshall Williams has no idea what he is doing on the field
the INT in the 4th quarter was due to him not running the comeback route – Orlovsky was really lighting into him when they got to the sidelines. He appears to be a nice athlete, but he is clueless at this point.

WR5
Whats the nature of the Blair White´s injury? If its not a big one, cant see why he wont be the WR5…
do we usually keep 10 d-linemen on the roster?
The Indianapolis Colts are going to be the 1st team to win a super bowl in their own stadium. 'nuff said.
yep, sometimes 9 but usually 10

Devon Moore
need one speed back and he can return kicks- not everyone, every time is going to kick it through the end zone, and he can do punts if necessary
We could use Peyton for return kicks and punt returns
since he is going to be on the field for the next play anyway.
"Take that baby out and paint some flames on it!" Peyton Manning
At least Peyton
is smart enough to FAIR CATCH it. I think averaging being at the 20 would be better than the colts have done for years and he’d be much happier as well.
and too bad no Taj
cause he make things happen on Special teams
why?
They haven’t really shown anything that warrants keeping them around have they?

In actual game action they have
For their old teams, the Falcons and Bears respectively. I thought both were good signings at the time, and I still need to see them in regular season action before I say they didn’t work out. I think they can make impacts, especially Anderson (who’s a fine run stopper)
by Coltsfan1345 on Aug 22, 2011 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
other teams gotta get to 54 too
so there may be some valuable guys cut, i could see us grabbing a CB that way for cheap. maybe a WR too if we do indeed lose blair white to the IR. I was hoping to see how he progressed this season. As for a safety, we should keep 2 backups given Bullits Injury history and they way guys are tweaking hammies right and left we need 2 at least.
as for the QB situation, I want to see Orlovksi get the start in week 3. see what he can do with the starters on the field. Any word on the status of our WRs who sat out last week playing? i say play Orlovski for 3 quarters and let painter mop up the 4th and then evaluate him.
Agree with all of this
They should look at the SS group after cuts and also at CB to try to pickup a solid veteran if available.
Orlovsky isn’t great, but has a better chance of keeping the car on the road than Painter and it would only be fair to see him with the first group to see how it goes since Painter hasn’t shown anything.
