Early Guess As To The 2011 Week One Depth Chart

So, the first depth chart of the 2011 was released today and, yeah, it's pretty stupid. Like many of you, I don't take this first list too seriously. If I did, I probably would lose my mind. There's absolutely no logical reason for Mike Pollak to be starting again, and Eric Foster as the back-up nose tackle is like having Pat McAfee as the back-up strong safety.

So, instead of complaining about a depth chart that is clearly either A) Not meant to be taken seriously, or B) Drafted by total morons, I submit my first, best 'guess' as to what the Week One 53-man roster will be.

QB: Peyton Manning, Dan Orlovsky (Yes, I dare to dream of a Colts team sans Curtis Painter)

RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Javarris James, Devin Moore

WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Blair White

TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Justin Snow

LT: Anthony Castonzo, Jeff Linkenbach

LG: Jacques McClendon, Joe Reitz

OC: Jeff Saturday, Jake Kirkpatrick

RG: Ben Ijalana, Kyle DeVan

RT: Ryan Diem

Defense after jump...

Star-divide

RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes

NT: Antonio Johnson, Ricardo Mathews, Veteran Free Agent (insert Pat Williams here, please)

UT: Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Tommie Harris

LE: Robert Mathis, Jamaal Anderson

WILL: Kavell Conner, Ernie Sims

MIKE: Gary Brackett, Cody Glenn

SAM: Pat Angerer, Tyjuan Hagler (I think he will be re-signed, but that's just me guessing)

CB: Jerraud Powers, Kevin Thomas, Chris Rucker

CB: Justin Tryon, Jacob Lacey, Brandon King

FS: Antoine Bethea, Veteran Free Agent (insert Darren Sharper, or the like, here)

SS: Melvin Bullitt, Joe Lefeged

P: Pat McAfee

K: Adam Vinatieri

Kick return is Devin Moore. Punt returns are Blair White.

Why do the colts continue to waste a spot on Justin snow? Can no one else long snap? Also while Brackett is a good guy, I’m ready for the Colts to upgrade the MLB position

by IndyCrombie on Aug 9, 2011 5:27 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I wonder the same thing about Snow. I brought this up in a fan post. Why cant we have tamme or eldridge be trained to be the LS. That would be huge to free up a valuable roster spot for something more then strictly a long snapper. I’ve never seen him do anything else. Could he help at TE if needed?

by Indyrampage on Aug 9, 2011 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Why dont we just train a gary brackett to play Linebacker and defensive tackle too...?

I mean why do we have to tie up a roster spot with a tough, dependable guy who makes sure AV can kick those extra points and 50 yard game winners…cmon…what a ridiculous thing to suggest. Think about it.

by pattymac on Aug 9, 2011 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Dang relax, its just a hypothetical! And LB to DT is a stupid analogy, totally different. SNow is listed as a TE so just thinking train the backup TE to do that job. It doesn’t sound that crazy does it. Snow isn’t the only one around that could LS. With training and practice someone else can do just as good a job.

by Indyrampage on Aug 9, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

just as good a job???

not hardly…. the ls is waaaay more important than you have a clue to. Bad snaps could lose us points costing us games…..npt to mention the battle of field position we already lose….52 roster spots is plenty for us to find versatility elsewhere…..

by BIG JOHN D on Aug 10, 2011 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

No I know how important this is. I wish I would have not got involved in this earlier. But to say, as you just did, that no one else could do a good a job is stupid. Snow is not the only long snapper in the league. And guess what he won’t be in Indy forever he will retire and need replaced. I have no doubt we will find someone that will do just as good a job as he.
When I got involved in this arguement I never really thought, or wanted for that matter, for snow to go. I know what he brings to the team, I know how important they are. The other poster brought it up I agreed on a hypothetical What if. It ould be done. Maybe our future LS would be a guy that does more.
Yesterday was a bad day and I vented on here, I apologize I know it was dumb. I’m football intelligent, I know whats up. So enough with all of this.

by Indyrampage on Aug 10, 2011 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Kind of like....

bad special teams play could lose us games?

by Ayrshire on Aug 10, 2011 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

The better question is...

Why do none of these players who enter the league fighting for a spot on the roster not have the intelligence to realize… “hey, if I can develop myself into one of the more accurate long snappers in the league, I can be valuable enough to get a chance at my true position.” I would think a guy like Tamme would have been working on it diligently for much of his first three years. Afterall, all he could really do is learn how to be the special teams guru. When Snow goes, maybe Tamme takes over.

In other news… I know Snow is “just” the long snapper but he is also very good on punt coverage. He is a far better athlete than you’d ever imagine. He also is an emergency backup quarterback and throws to receivers in drills during camp and summer activities to give the quarterbacks a breather from time-to-time.

Havent the rules for Emergency QB changed now anyway?

Your allowed a 3rd QB if your first 2 go down or something like that

Hank Baskett IS A WANKER

by ColtsUK on Aug 10, 2011 7:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe now the new rules state that we can have 53 roster spots and allow 3 active QB’s. In the past it had been 52 plus a 3rd QB that was not allowed into the game until an active QB was injured.
This helps teams like Buffalo that have a player like Brad Smith. He will be listed as 3rd QB but can be active and will participate in ST and receiving, as he was with the Jets.
Someone correct me if i’m wrong.

by Indyrampage on Aug 10, 2011 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it was the 46th game day spot is no longer only for the 3rd QB,

And the 3rd can now play at any time without voiding one of the other QBs.

by Indyrampage on Aug 10, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Dont know where I got 52 to 53 increase, it’s still early. yes it is the 46th game day spot

by Indyrampage on Aug 10, 2011 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Because

Long snapper is one of the great underrated positions…not having a competent long snapper is like giving away points and/or field position. Unfortunately there has to be one on the roster and Justin is one of the best. You would regret it if the Colts didn’t have a dedicated long snapper on the team. Also, he is a special teams contributor.

I don't agree with the Pat Williams or Darren Sharper signings

Those are prime spots for depth/ST players. I don’t see Pat Williams or Darren Sharper playing on teams.

I see a roster like this:

QB: 18, 7 (Go Boilers)
RB: 29, 31, 34, 45
WR: 87, 17, 85, 11, 15
TE: 44, 81, 84
OL: 74, 65, 63, 79, 71, 66, 72, 76, 78
DL: 99, 95, 96, 94, 91, 98, 93, 92, 68, 90
LB: 55, 58, 51, 53, 52, 50 (Remember, Wheeler is good on ST)
CB: 25, 20, 27, 21, 36, 39
S: 41, 33, 38, 23, 49 (Lefeged might sneak his way in here)
ST: 48, 1, 4

by GoHorse88 on Aug 9, 2011 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah...

I’m lame.

Sorry, I figured there weren’t that many new ones on there and most people would be able to read that.

QB: Manning, Painter (Go Boilers)
RB: Addai, Brown, Carter, Moore
WR: Wayne, Collie, Garcon, Gonzo, White
TE: Clark, Eldridge, Tamme
OL: Castonzo, McClendon, Saturday, Ijalana, Diem, DeVan, Link, Reitz, Pollak
DL: Mookie, Moala, Harris, Nevis, Mathews, Mathis, Freeney, Hughes, Foster, Anderson
LB: Sims, Brackett, Angerer, Conner, Glenn, Wheeler(Remember, Wheeler is good on ST)
CB: Powers, Tryon, Lacey, Thomas, Rucker, Brown
S: Bethea, Bullitt, Newton, Afalava, Vaughn(Lefeged might sneak his way in here)
ST: Snow, McAfee, Vinnatieri

by GoHorse88 on Aug 9, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

definitely not lame

I wish I knew the numbers of every player on the roster… I could probably name all the starters’ numbers though?

The Indianapolis Colts are going to be the 1st team to win a super bowl in their own stadium. 'nuff said.

by It'sAlways18 on Aug 9, 2011 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Very close

For some reason, I feel Foster can play run down DE and that diminishes the value of Anderson. Chick, the team has more money and time invested in him (remember the $1 mil., the highest signing bonus paid to a CFL player last year by the Colts???). I think it pays off now and Chick makes it over Anderson.

Another big question is, if Blair White stays on PUP to start the season, do we sign someone like Brandon Stokely for insurance, who knows our system and can contribute quicker without being in TC with us? That would definitely have to be in the back of the coaches’ minds.

If Lacey stays injured, a zone CB like Randall Gay, released by the Saints, can provide veteran back up presence, IMO.

by iluvthecolts on Aug 11, 2011 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

The only two issue I see are QB and the right side of the line.

I don’t see how Painter loses the job. When Saturday and Wayne are lobbying every other day on his behalf, it will be difficult for him to lose the job. My biggest issue is, based on what I saw last year and what has been said this year, he cannot handle pressure. He’s fine until the pocket starts to break down then he gets happy feet and goes to shit.

As far as Ijalana at G and Diem at RT, I don’t see it. Everything I’ve read has said that Ben is backing up Diem and playing RT. I think they start Diem and hope Ijalana breaks into the starting lineup at some point this year. I know you hate Pollack, but the best bet is that McClendon and Reitz really show something and win the G spots. I also like the fact that Kirkpatrick is making a little noise. I would love for him to secure the backup C spot and have a shot of succeeding Saturday down the line.

by strandedincarolina on Aug 9, 2011 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

"Kirkpatrick making noise"

The reports from yesterday don’t quite add up. Saturday was back with the 1st team and Richard, who was relegated to 2nd team, got hurt at practice. Thus, Kirkpatrick got the nod to move up to 2nd team.

I hope there’s some promise there with Kirkpatrick, but I bet he’d be a PS-type guy this season.

by GoHorse88 on Aug 9, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

QB

Manning is the QB, end of story. They don’t even care who is the backup and neither should we. If Manning goes down, the team should try to sign Favre or Warner as an emergency if the team still has SB aspirations or tank the season to get a good draft slot IMO.

I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Breaking News!

Colts are signing former Bears G Josh Beekman. I know his agent, he just got off the phone with Bill Polian.

Josh played in the UFL last year but had some good years with the Bears. Hes a big kid too…I remember playing against him in high school! Glad hes gettin a shot in Indy

Maybe this is the end for Pollak or Devan??

Sometimes this looks more like A) “what BBS would do if he was a GM” roster rather than B)“an early guess at what the Colts might actually do” I have no problem with either. Just don’t call something B when it is actually A.

As people above have pointed out:

1. Pollak will not be cut. He isn’t a great guard, but he has improved, and is still working under his rookie contract.

2. Curtis Painter will not be cut. Though I would say there is at least a very small chance of this.

3. Eric Foster IS a DT backup. He is not a Nose Tackle. But he is a backup DT.

I think you're close, but I think it'll be

QB: Peyton Manning, Curtis Painter (time invested outweighing orlovsky being slightly better if at all)

RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Delone Carter, Chad Spann, Devin Moore

WR: Reggie Wayne. Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Blair White

TE: Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Brody Eldridge, Justin Snow

LT: Anthony Castonzo, Jeff Linkenbach

LG: Jacques McClendon, Josh Reekman

OC: Jeff Saturday, Jake Kirkpatrick

RG: Kyle DeVan, Mike Pollak

RT: Ben Ijalana, Ryan Diem

Offense: 26 players

RE: Dwight Freeney, Jerry Hughes

NT Antonio Johnson, Ricardo Mathews, Ollie Ogbu

UT: Fili Moala, Drake Nevis, Tommie Harris

PURDUE FANS

I’m so sick of the Purdue faithful making excuses and holding a roster spot for Painter. Get real guys……he’s not going to make it in the NFL, not even as a back up. He has had enough time to show what he can do and he never takes advantage of the opportunity. The Painter I see crumbles under pressure during pre-season games (even with the first team), imagine this guy leading you in week 1 regular season……..what a train wreck that would be. I would much rather move on with Orlovsky or get Nate Davis some time on the field and see what he can do.

Get over it Purdue Boys……..Painter won’t make this team.

by Blue Report on Aug 10, 2011 7:28 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Well, he's already made the NFL as a backup

and he’s probably not going anywhere. The Colts don’t carry backup QBs with the intent that they’ll ever see the field in meaningful action (not counting the horrible Jets debacle). They’ve accepted that if #18 goes down, it’s over, we’re screwed. So has it occurred to anyone that maybe Painter (like Jim Sorgi before him, but he got too expensive) is great at breaking down film and understanding the offense, etc.? Even if he can’t and will never be able to run the offense himself. I think the team sees the value in a backup QB in those “assistant” areas and doesn’t see the backup QB as someone who will ever take the field.

This^^

I think Painter brings a lot to the team. I’ll tell you one thing…the Colts will be a train wreck with any of the backups they have on the roster right now. I don’t think Wayne and Saturday are speaking on Painter’s behalf just to be nice guys…there is something there.

Anyway, lets hope we never have to find out.

by TRDean on Aug 10, 2011 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Really???

So your telling me we should accept Painter as the back up because if Peyton gets hurt the season is over and Painter is a great film guy???? Give me a break!!!!

We should never have the opinion that if Manning gets hurt the season is over – thats not acceptable. We should be prepared for the worse with the best possible backup we can have for the money we want to spend in that area. You must have a capable backup that could step in maybe not win you games but not loose you games. I’m not sure if that guy is currently on the roster or not but it sure isn’t Painter.

We are lucky to have not had to deal with Peyton being gone for an extended amount of time and I hope we never loose him for an extended amount of time but we must be prepared and I don’t think we have ever been prepared with our depth at QB.

by Blue Report on Aug 10, 2011 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

I agree. We can find a guy that offers what Curtis does but can actually play the position better. I think it’s dumb to suggest that any professional team puts everything in one guy and not even attempt if he went down. I know a lot is riding on manning but with a competent back up we could win a few more games. It’s disrespectful to the rest of our players to think that they couldn’t.

..having the guy on the roster is idiotic, to put it mildly.
