The arguement for Painter.

Right now, every fan has their opinion on who should be starting at QB.  In my mind, it's not much of an arguement.  It's an over that hill player that looks to be predictably bad verses a younger player who has shown just enough flashes to make you think there is a chance he could be better and actually move the offense and score TDs.

I realize Collins has not had much time to acclimate, but he has a lot of experience.  With experience, you expect a little more out of him.  He's locking on his primary receiver way to much.  He's missing some really obvious blitzes.   He's missing really badly on deep balls.  He's not doing a good job of checking down.  His accuracy is not good in general.  I don't think he can function without a solid line and a good run game.  We come up short in both areas.  What you see is basically what you are going to get from Kerry, and right now that is a completely lost player who is playing scared. Finally, everybody is assuming that he is going to hold up.  He's missed practice already with shoulder issues.  It looks like he got a concussion tonight.  He is what 38?  It's about 50-50 that he even holds up for the year.

Painter might be worse.  Even if he isn't, it's highly probable he won't be good.  However, there is a reasonable chance that with experience he could be decent and move this offense.  He has shown more on two drives, one against GB and one against the Steelers, than Collins has the entire time he has been here.  He has shown the ability to hit deep throws.  He knows the playbook.  He has decent timing with receivers.  He's skipping quite a few balls, but that may go away for the most part with some experience.  He has the potential to be better, which is more than I can say for Collins right now.   There is a chance he could still be a Colt next year.  Collins will not be with a 10 mil price tag.  Might as well kick the tires this season and find out what we got.  He is a gamble with upside that offers an alternative to the predictable stagnation that is Kerry Collins.

One arguement that has been thrown out there by BBS and some others is we paid Collins 4 mil so he must be better.   Wrong.  It is 100% total BS.  It means we thought he was better.  That money has been paid and is gone, so don't even think about it.  We will be out the money and cap space no matter who starts.  Decisions need to be made based on who is the better QB and who gives us the best chance to win.  If you think it is Collins, fine.  Just make your arguement on the player and not the contract.   I don't see how a writer can make an arguement that the best player regardless of draft position deserves a roster spot, and then change philosophies when it comes to starting and contracts.  The best players should play, period.

Agree, word for word.

I’ve been saying these same things since Week 1. I’ve tweeted about it too, taking a lot of shit for my comments but I don’t really care. We’ve seen all we are going to see out of Collins, and nobody is factoring in his age and the fact that, hey, he might just be done and won’t improve regardless of how much more time he gets in this offense with these players. People keep giving him that excuse though and I think it’s silly. I’ve seen absolutely zero improvement from Week 1, how much more do we need to see to figure out he’s not going to get any better???

Another thing… Why is everyone allowing Painter’s past cloud their judgement so much? What chance other than the Packers game in the preseason and the three drives tonight has that guy had to run the 1st team offense? You all saw the flashes in that game, and you saw some more tonight. Ask yourself: Has the offense ever looked like the offense we’re used to under Collins in 11 quarters? Then ask yourself the same question about Painter in his minimal playing time against Packers/Steelers.

Is it possible for him to just blow as bad as your memories serve? Hell yea. Is it also possible he could progress and become a decent NFL quarterback? I think so. You know, body language says a lot about players, and that goes double for quarterbacks. Curtis Painter looks extremely sure of himself out there. He looks like he can lead a team. He looks confident in his ability to run the Colts offense the way it’s supposed to be run. Mistakes included, isn’t that all we want? To see the offense, for the most part, run the way we’re used to?

Strandedcarolina gets it.

Hope Painter starts next week so everyone else can get it, too.

Agree Here Too.

I saw what Collins have done in the past with the Titans and such, and he was a pretty good QB. I didn’t expect him to come in and play like Peyton Manning, no one plays like Peyton Manning except Peyton Manning. But I did expect him to make some big plays, get a few first downs, and score at least 1 TD per game. I expected him to carry the Colts to a 8-8 season or at least a 6-10 season, but if this carries on, Colts will go 2-14 or 1-15, or we will be the 2008 Detroit Lions.

I expected to Collins to start vs HOU, and because it was his first game, I expected for him to be more familiar with the offense so I expected him to start vs CLE. But after that performance, I was ready for Painter to start.

Although I don’t like Painter a whole lot, I don’t like most backup Colt QBs, because for the most part…they’re benchwarmers, and that’s all. Jim Sorgi isn’t much more than Painter, and for anyone saying Orlovsky was better and should’ve been kept over Painter, c’mon. Give it up. Orlovsky was crap. He showed close to nothing all pre-season. While I would love someone like Mike Kafka or Tim Tebow to be a backup QB, we don’t have one. We have Curtis Painter. 6th round pick, 2009.

In his rookie season, our dumb head coach sent him out against the Jets not only to keep the Colts undefeated streak alive, but to play QB against a Jets teaming fighting for the playoffs. The fact that he has a career 9.8 QB rating isn’t fair. Because he should have a 0.0 QB rating. He should not have played at all in the past 2 seasons. No one deserves that sort of crap.

Does Curtis Painter give us a better chance at winning? I believe so. Not only has Painter shown more than Collins, Painter at least release the ball and he won’t eye 1 receiver the whole time. Not to mention Painter is younger. Painter also has 1 thing that I don’t think Collins has. Painter has team support. Especially from #1 WR Reggie Wayne. This is especially huge because he is the #1 receiver. The other WRs must respect Reggie and what he stands for, so in theory, they are behind him and will also vouch for Painter. Look at Reggie Wayne these past few games. He’s looked more pissed than ever. He’s disgusted by all the overthrown balls from Collins and the only TD he’s caught was a terrible throw from Collins.

If Reggie Wayne will vouch for Painter, than I will too. I believe the whole Colts team are behind Painter, and not many are behind Collins. Painter to start vs TB!

I agree with the stranded, nick, and KB, and have little more to add. They said it all.

This team is improving “6-inches at a time,” as one of Caldwell’s more colorful expressions goes. Collins isn’t going to improve, but Painter might. Let’s grow with him.

Definitely agree with all the above.....but.....

If Collins can’t go on Monday night vs the Bucs, who is our backup after Peyton.

Also, Collins is like 97 years old….what if this concussion is season ending for him? Do we bring up Hartline® from PSquad or sign Garrard or somebody else?

Thoughts?

Re: skipped balls

I think they will become less common with some time on the field, but I would rather have skipped balls than high sailing throws that are intercepted by someone behind the intended receiver.

Painters under thrown "skipped" passes

Reminded me of throwing flat rock “skippers” into White River as a kid.

Painter

Is absolutely awful. His throw to Garcon was one of the worst passes I’ve ever seen, and he is the most inaccurate QB I’ve ever seen play in the nfl. However, he cares and is passionate and the play calling seems better when he’s playing…

I’ve been waffling on this, but I guess I’d rather see Painter with heart and hope that he can improve, than see Collins looking unhappy and hoping he can learn more of the playbook. But I don’t really care at this point.

Worst most inaccurate QB in the NFL?

You obviously didn’t watch the Jacksonville game last week

Starting KC...

.. makes no sense cause it doesnÄt bring us anything for the future. Now, with the season virtually over it doesn’t make any sense starting him. develop the young kid and see what comes out.
If he does well, we’ll have a solid back up or an extra draft pick for shipping him
if he continues to just suck we’ll have a top 5 draft pick.

there’s simply no revenue in starting KC.
