Why Painter should get a shot

Kerry Collins - 2 TD drives in about 170 minutes of football...both of which were in garbage time and game was completely out of reach.

Curtis Painter - 1TD drive in 10 minutes of football...which was a game-tying drive in the 4th quarter against one of the top defenses in the NFL

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating/qualified/false

Clearly neither of these guys are good (see the QB Rating), however, it appears that Painter has better timing with the receivers than Collins does, and this is under the circumstances that Collins takes the first team reps in practice...Painter had some terrible terrible throws, but I think this was caused by some jitters.  I don't fault him for the strip-sack fumble returned for a TD...that was just garbage pass protection on that play.  If we are not going to go out and try to pick someone up, I say we role the dice with Painter...

Totally agree. Where is the downside in playing Painter? If he stinks the Colt’s will have an awful record. I have news for everyone, they are going to have an awful record anyway. The upside is, if he is pretty good, they have a decent backup. If he is really good, which I doubt, they have a trade chip.
The Collins signing made sense only if Manning was going to be out a few games. Since this is clearly not the case, I say play the kid.

Even if they pick someone up

it will take a long time for them to grasp the offense and audibles. I think the best shot is painter and hope that he can work his way through it. The Steeler game was the first time he had a complete starting offense and considering he looked good..except for that blown td pass to garcon but give the guy a break…Let him prepare as a starter and see what happens

Plus, the F.O. blew its wad $$ wise on KC.

There is no money left to sign a good QB. I say go with Painter…

on the other hand, any QB that has true desire to play this year will sign for the vet minimum now

so long as we don’t try to lure someone out of retirement. A QB whose primary motivation is money is not going to rescue this team. Regardless, the QB quickie-mart’s shelves are bare. May as well see if those old groceries are any good.
Throw Painter against the wall and see if he sticks.

Hmm

Not sold. Painter’s throws looked bad. His overthrow of Garcon was possibly the worst pass you’ll see all year. Then he got sacked and stripped for a TD, that’s a 14 point turn-around. I think Collins looks dis-interested. I think Painter looks awful. I can’t decide which is worse.

by Rogco on Sep 26, 2011 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

First throw

I don’t get why everybody is evaluating Painter on that first throw. Give the guy a break! He has hardly had any time with those guys in the past few weeks, and he was probably a little nervous coming in in that situation. Yes he made a few mistakes at first, but he eventually turned it around and played very well I thought. I think he looked good on that scoring drive than Collins has all year. I say we give him a shot.

by wardta on Sep 26, 2011 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

not only was the first throw bad

He also had 2or 3 passes that he threw at the WR’s feet, which he did constantly in the pre-season

and

how is that different from what collins did? I don’t know what game you were watching but Collins didn’t exactly complete all of his passes, and the ones he missed the WRs were nowhere to be found. Painter is not Brady 2.0 but at least he did what Collins could not do, score a TD, and collins had good field position a couple of times.

by fanatik on Sep 27, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly

Collins has looked aweful so far this season. Yeah Painter threw some bad passes, but he still lead us to a TD to come even close to winning us the game. No way would collins have done that.

by wardta on Sep 28, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Moreover...

… with Manning up in the booth Painter is more of a help than Collins. I just watched the replay of the Steelers game and I noticed one BIG difference between those 2 (bad) QB’s which is that Painter communicates and calls signals and Collins just doesn’t. KC just looks like an alien in this offense. Painter has 2 years of practice and knows what he’s doing. And if I were PM up in the booth with a headset I’d rather command a guy who f****ing knows what I’m talking about.
Curtis is a young developmental guy whereas Collins was acquired hoping that he miraculously leads us to the postseason. With 0-3 this is obviously not gonna happen so thereÄs neither need nor sense in starting collins. you argue with 4M? He’ll get ’em anyway and we have no benefit in starting him. if Painter develops better than we think, well maybe we can ship him for some draft pick to a desperation team. If we keep him we need him as an insurance in case #18 gets hurt again. both ways, he needs to play more than just 3 games at the end of the season.

BTW: I didn’t see any signs of cuncussion on KC. If it was on that rather late hit from the right his initial response was looking for a flag with is not really a sign of concussion. he then kept playing for some series until he was pulled. again- not sign of a concussion.

by Martin Steinkogler on Sep 26, 2011 4:32 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I think your analysis is spot on...

although the argument could be made that KC’s performance so far this season is consistent with the signs of a concussion….

rec'd for "KC just looks like an alien in this offense"

Painter and Peyton probably understand each other better. After all, Painter’s already had two years of Old Gaelic lessons.

Your post prompted another possible advantage to Painter

While his performance obviously won’t be like Peyton, the play calling and pace will be much more like Peyton than anyone else. This will keep the rest of the offense primed for Peyton’s return.

With a QB who doesn’t know the offense, the other players will be out of sync with Peyton when he returns. Again, performance aside, this might me why the offense perked up when Painter was in. It all felt familar.

right

as soon as Painter went into the game, i realized that he was at least trying to do what PM would have done, and i supposed he has a better relation with PM which would only help. I’m just happy that PM is calling the plays now, he is the only one in the organization who is qualified to make the rights calls for the offense and i think it showed during the game.

by fanatik on Sep 27, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

We wish Peyton were calling the plays

Painter was looking to Clyde for the play, and of course it was late as usual.

by coltsfoot85 on Sep 28, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason they are late to Painter is because

of the sequence of the play call. Irsay tweets the play to Polian, who forwards it to PM in the booth, PM shakes his head and changes the play and gives it to Clyde. Clyde gives the wrong play to Curtis with 3 seconds left on the clock.

Good god how many breaks are some people really gonna give Painter.

Painter absolutely blows….Forget about the strip sack. Can you really see any team in the nfl starting this guy or for that matter even taking him as a back-up (a huge NO). He has done absolutely nothing during a game to show he can win. NOTHING!!! Even his 80 yard drive conisted of about 3 good throws…and many good runs by addai…who had the touchdown by the way off of a run not a pass. As for who is better between Painter and Collins….who cares…Collins has proven he can win games in the past…he doesn’t have rythym with this team because he has a slow release and has been with the team for a month….Painter has more rythym because for Pete’s sakes he should…he’s been with this team for a couple years. Painter couldn’t even land the starting job for freaking Purdue his senior year ….People may say Collins is crap…but replacing crap with a different flavor of crap still gives you crap!!!! Painter doesn’t have one win in the nfl and has never thrown for a colts touchdown. He has played in three games with 3 fumbles and two interceptions, no touchdowns and an average of less than 4 yards per attempt. I say screw them both…..release both and either pick up gerrard if he’s available or stick in Hartline…..That’s even if we want to win games…which i question from the upper management….Keep us in the seats…sure….but win games….with some of the questionable moves they have made???? I know I am a conspiracy theorist but damn!!!!

and for those people who think he is a project

Get over it….He was outplayed in many peoples eyes in the preseason. Comparing him to Sorgi..who also did most of his work with the 2nd team….Sorgi did much better!!! Sorgi had 4 touchdowns and 1 interception and 1 fumble in 10 games with the colts…his best year was his 2nd year. The only way Painter can help if put in is assuring us the worst record in the nfl!. I don’t hope they do this!!!!

At this point,

we really don’t have much of a choice. Any QB on the Colts roster, in my opinion, is not even close to the answer. The debate is kind of humorous. They all suck in their own way. But, I believe Curtis Painter, as bad as he’s been, is our best option. I’d still like to see if he can turn it around in the next couple of games. Probably not, but we can hope. Collins being out is probably a blessing. We need to see what Painter can do for a whole game.

by Ayrshire on Sep 30, 2011 5:59 AM EDT up reply actions

You're not a conspiracy theorist

You are detached from reality. In your world, Peyton Manning, Dree Brees, and Tom Brady have never thrown an errant pass. I recall a number of games where Peyton was throwing to phantom receivers, and in 2007 there was the infamous Chargers game that gave new meaning to “pick 6”.

Anyone who is making the case that Painter is the future replacement for Manning or even a potential season starter for an NFL team is also not seeing straight. But your declarations that Hartline is an option is….. well, actually, it is so ridiculous it is entertaining.

Painter now has one half of a regular season nfl game with the 1 team under his belt. My guess is that he will be playing many more quarters if not starting by the time this season is over. I also predict that he will prove to be a pretty serviceable quarterback with a reasonable amount of success moving the offense, and that when he does you will find countless ways to criticise his performance.

by indylator on Sep 27, 2011 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Hartline

Not detached from reality. Reality is we don’t have a good back up qb and most people living in reality would agree. Hartline may suck but hasn’t played( they kept him because maybe they saw something) Painter has and we know he sucks (you can’t throw out bad games because it hurts your argument). His stats suck….Collins suck too… I don’t have answers just know painter isn’t one. I hope ur right on painter…. And I am mire than willing to eat crow….but if painter starts and wins more than 2 games this seasons I would be very surprised.

I agree but,

I agree that Painter sucks, but so has Collins. We don’t have many options right now because the front office is way to reactive instead of being proactive. Now they have signed Orlovsky. So who starts? I really don’t think it matters cause none of them are any good. I think based on the situation we can give Painter a chance. He can’t be any worse than Collins right now so we really don’t have anything to lose except another game. I can’t believe I just said I think we should start Painter. What is the world coming to?

by Colts Forever on Sep 27, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh no...

It’s the reality that there are three QBs on the roster – they all suck. Painter sucks the least of the three. That’s not an endorsement of Painter – rather, the reality that the team faces.

by Yougotme on Sep 28, 2011 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Here is the thing...

No one on here is saying that Painter is the QB of the future or that he is going to be a force in the NFL. However, the one thing I see out of Painter that I do not see out of Collins is this – he appears motivated and driven to get his shot. This is a young QB who has been the whipping post of this team ever since he blew the perfect season. He comes into a game against a top ranked defense on Sunday Night Football, (with what I would assume would be very minimal 1st team practice experience) and leads the team to their FIRST MEANINGFUL touchdown drive of the season towards the end of the 4th quarter.

Collins came into the Colts system without having to prove sh*t…he was handed the job over just because he is a seasoned vet. Painter was the guy working with the first stringers while Peyton was recovering. Painter was the guy who appeared to start developing some trust and chemistry with his receivers (Hence Reggie Waynes comments re: Collins). And finally, Painter was the guy who was staying in shape and dedicating his time to football…and here comes Collins (probably pulling a good ol Testaverde by sitting on the couch with a bag of potato chips) and just gets handed the starting job.

Curtis Painter right now is our best option…sure, we can go out and pickup another QB, like Garrard…however, he is going to cost $$$$ and he is going to want to be a starter for a team (and he knows he won’t be when Manning comes back this year or next). As mentioned by someone before, the FA QB bucket is pretty empty right now…we either go with the old guy who has shown us absolutely nothing

Collins has completed 49 percent of his passes, averaging less than 5 yards per attempt. He’s thrown two TDs, one interception, lost three fumbles and been sacked five times and, at times, looked absolutely dreadful.

During a second-half stretch in the Week 2 loss to Cleveland, Collins threw 10 straight incompletions and was 3 of 9 in the third quarter Sunday before leaving.

or we go with the young guy who looks more eager to continue learning and helping this team win some games…and remember

It was his first regular-season action since the end of 2009.

One last note, I feel that if Manning is going to be able to assist either of these QBs, Painter is going to be much more receptive. He has first hand experience to Manning work ethic and dedication. He is probably more comfortable with Peyton (and vice versa), and I wonder how awkward it is for Peyton trying to give advice to someone who has been in the league longer than he has and who has started on various teams before…

Knowing the Colts and their tenancy to play guys who have shown them nothing (Jacob Lacey), I bet if Collins is cleared, he will get the nod to start on MNF…and as awful as it sounds, I hope he isn’t cleared and they roll with Painter to see how he responds on a road game in primetime…they may both stink it up, but I think Painter has earned his shot to start, while Collins 80 year old stomach is probably still digesting that bag of Cheetos from a month ago. Go with kid Colts!

People wanted to tear my comment up earlier z

But I just don’t think you can throw out the preseason. Painter has played with some of the first stringers in preseason and still failed to impress…he has only been good in practice. I personally think he would have shown us improvement by now…and save one drive….he has not. I don’t think Hartline is the answer either. I just believe we should test guys…and I may be the only one bit I believe painter has already been tested and failed…I think management knows this too…which is why they got Collins. On a different note…man painter has some fans here on this blog. I’m not one but wow.

by nighttrain551 on Sep 28, 2011 12:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Point taken...

but in all fairness, and without discounting preseason, I thought he looked pretty solid against Green Bay, and they have a pretty stout defense. Right now, we aren’t looking for a game changer, we are looking for a game manager…I think Painter has more of the Colts offensive philosophy than Collins does. We need to bank on our run if we are going to put points on the board….I do think that Painter’s feet throws are unacceptable and that needs to stop and I also think Garcon and the rest of the skill guys need to start catching just about everything thrown their way…our drives have been killed one too many times by these guys simply dropping passes. We cannot afford to get into second and long with ANY quarterback other than #18, which means the dropped passes, errant throws and dumb o-line penalties need to stop. I am not a Painter fan….but I do think he has earned his shot. Collins came in and did nothing for almost 3 games…we either need to trade for a QB or give Painter his shot…I wish all Colts players to succeed in their rolls, but the way the skill-position players have performed (excluding any of the RBs) over the past 3 games is not acceptable. Unfortunately, it all starts and ends with our QBs.

Play him or cut him

Painter cannot continue to sit on the bench as a Colt if he cant at least lead the team to a .500 season. Going forward we cant just omit the games that Peyton may miss. He showed some flashes last Sunday. I think it’s time to play him full-time and if you dont like what you see, say goodbye.

I personally hope he does well. I’d hate to waist a 2012 draft pick out of fear on a QB if Peyton is going to be healthy. There are a lot of needs that we can address in next years draft with an early pick in the first 4 rounds.
