Colts Working Out Quarterbacks Dan Orlovsky, Brodie Croyle

The Indianapolis Star is reporting that the Colts have two Quarterbacks in their facility today for a workout, and one is a familiar name from Training Camp:

Sources says #Colts are working out QB Dan Orlovsky and Brodie Croyle today as they consider roster addition.

So let the speculation begin on who will no longer be on the roster. I'm a believer that Peyton Manning will not be placed on IR at any point this season, even if it ultimately wastes a roster spot all season. That's why you hear Colts owner Jim Irsay say he may start practicing in December, just so people can hope to see their favorite Colts suit up and play in the season's final month, even though he absolutely shouldn't play in meaningless games (he never has before).

That means that if one of these guys is signed, the Colts will have four QBs on the active roster, something I'm not sure anyone has done before.

Star-divide

We could see somebody who is already injured placed on Injured Reserve, such as Ernie Sims or Melvin Bullitt, but I'm thinking they'll stay on the active roster. Neither injury seems that long-term. The Colts have had Kevin Thomas inactive all three weeks, and Chris Rucker inactive once. So, we could see a move like what happened with Darren Evans, going to Practice Squad, for one of those guys for a week or two. Could be one of the Defensive Ends (I'm guessing not Jerry Hughes).

We should find out soon enough. Certainly seems as though Curtis Painter will get his first NFL start on Monday Night Football though.

How is Garrard not being considered?

Dude gave the Colts tons of problems and did pretty well in Jax with one of, if not the, worst receiving corps in the league.

Cap Space

No money for Garrard. Garrard isn’t going to ask for nothing.

by KBUnitz on Sep 27, 2011 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

That’s why I feel like he hasn’t been signed. He is a very good backup, but just an average to below-average starter. He probably wants starter money.

My, how far we have fallen so quickly

While the FO is acting calm about everything, I bet it is a chaotic fire drill inside.

More time wasted..

Any other QB is just going to have the same problem Kerry has..trying to learn the system. I don’t see much more this team can do as far a QB goes. Brodie Croyle wasn’t a bad QB when he played for Bama but you are asking him to pick up on the system rather quickly if you sign him. I think all of this highlights one key issue! They never thought that they would need a solid back up behind Peyton…and well… now, we clearly see they do. Unfortunately, it’s to late. I believe its too late to have a good QB learn our system for this season, and too late to save this season. We are kinda forced to jump on the Painter Wagon are we not?

by Dalton Pate on Sep 27, 2011 12:40 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I think...

Kerry has more problems than “learning the system”. His release, lack of vision, pocket awareness, accuracy etc… are the problem.

Painter it is. Let’s see what he can do with a full start and a meaningful game. It’s could be another disaster but where the offense is currently at (running game hesitantly excluded), anything is an improvement.

29th overall offense in the league (27th in the pass, 28th in points, 28th in the red zone, 32nd aka dead last in ypa). Horrid.

One of the best players on the Bucs

won’t be on the field Monday. Cody Grimm, a starting safety, and very important to the Bucs defense suffered a knee injury this week. He was good against the run too. I’m sure Painter will make mincemeat of the Bucs secondary with Grimm out.

by Ayrshire on Sep 27, 2011 12:43 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

umm... lol?

I think you forgot to throw that in there. The only thing Painter makes mincemeat out of… is people who believe he is starting QB material.

Painter… sucks… he is probably really intelligent, and knows the system, has good arm strength and accuracy (in practice), but he can’t execute during gametime… I think it will be worse in front of a MNF crowd. This week is probably the last week he will have to prove it. If he doesn’t completely blow Tampa away, and Collins is back healthy he’s not starting the next week (lets be real… even if he manages to be pretty good the Colts FO is stout enough to keep playing Collins), and he will likely be cut next year.

You obviously

haven’t read any of my other comments if you thought I was serious. Like other fans, I’ll be pulling for him. But, if I’m being totally honest, he’s too inaccurate and gets rattled easily. Hope that changes, but I’m not too confident. If I see more passes thrown to receivers that skip off the ground, I may lose it completely. And, I’ll have a front row seat for it, since I’m in Tampa and will be at the game, in my Colts gear of course.

The Colts are just wasting time

There is not a QB out there that can save this season. They might as well go with Painter. Its obvious the Colts dont believe in Painter so why did they keep him on the roster.

by SRBradford on Sep 27, 2011 1:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed

don’t know why they want to waste time and $$ on a lost cause of picking up another QB. Let Painter play out the season and get some experience behind him. He wasn’t that bad Sunday and had better timing than KC. Just let the guy play.

by bluecoltsfan on Sep 27, 2011 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually adding a 4th is more telling about Collins than Painter

If Collins is hurt and has a concussion he most likely won’t be eligible to play Monday. It would be ridiculous to go into a game with only 1 QB dressed and able to play

Whoever lives past today and comes home safely will rouse himself each year on this day, show his neighbors his scars, and tell embellished stories of all their great feats of battle.

by brown11b on Sep 27, 2011 2:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   2 recs

Agree

They should just accept it and tough out the season. Painter and Collins aren’t the answer, but I don’t see how they think signing someone off of the street will help.

Of the two, I’d sign Croyle just so we can see his hot wife again.

What do I really have left in life but this place? It ain't much of a home, but it's all I got. Well, g******it. I'll be damned if I let some foreign, graffiti writin', soul suckin', son of a bitch in an oversized cowboy hat and boots take my friend's souls and sh** 'em down the visitors toilet!

with the Manningless Colts being featured 2 weeks in a row. I wonder if NBC can replace the Colts/Saints Sunday night game in 4 weeks.

Peyton needs to stay on the active roster.

Obviously this season is toast if he’s not playing but if there is any chance he could practice by December, which most reports indicate he should be able to, than the Colts have to keep him so they can evaluate his progress. If they end up with the 1st Pick, then his progress from Surgery will tell a lot about what they’ll do with the Pick. If he’s healthy than I assume they’ll trade the pick to build a great team around him for the last 3 to 4 years of his career. If he isn’t healthy, then they’ll draft Luck and either release Peyton or work some deal to have him retire in like 2 years.

Why would we need to evaluate Peyton Manning?

Have we not seen enough to know what he can do? Why rush the guy back before he is 100% healthy to play in 2011?

What evaluation in December of 2011 will have any bearing on September of 2012?

by aaronb on Sep 27, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm with you

i don’t think we will be able to tell much, Peyton has shown that he takes WEEKS of every snap in practice to be effective, which would be bad for our other QB’s. We all know what he’s capable of. If he doesn’t recover enough to play, I don’t feel like he will play in 2012.

Look at 2008 where he missed all of preseason. He looked pretty average until week 8 when we snapped off 9 wins in a row. If we started him in December, we wouldn’t be be seeing “Peyton”.

by coltsfanbeforemanning on Sep 27, 2011 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Just make sure he can make all the throws

by aaronb on Sep 27, 2011 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure completely....

But if he is put on IR I’m pretty sure he can’t practice with the team at all. Therefore, we keep him on the roster so when he does come back (assuming January) he has 9 months of practicing with the team and building arm strength rather than a couple months during training camp. I don’t know about you but I would like him working with our training staff and coaches for 9 months rather than 3 before putting the neck to the test.

by Blue Horse on Sep 28, 2011 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

He can rehab with the team while on IR

All it means is that he isn’t eligible to play in any games the rest of the season.

Unfortunately someone slipped some kryptonite around Supermans neck. This season is dead. We root for our team and hope the rookies can really develop for next year.

I'm agreeing, and taking it a step further

We need to IR Manning and Cut/take the cap hit for any Vet who isn’t in the long term plan of the franchise.

I’d like to see us pillage some prospects off of some other teams practice squads and hopefully unearth a couple of undervalued future assets.

Got a call on his show last night about Warner…said it was too difficult for a qb to be away from the game for a full year and then come back.

So rule out anyone that wasn’t on a roster last year.

There is no point in keeping Collins anymore

He was brought in allegedly to hold the fort while Manning was out and obviously he wasn’t able to do that. I don’t blame him, the odds were against him. So let’s thank Kerry for trying and move on with Painter. The season is almost lost anyway. If I were Colts I would go with Painter. To be honest I am excited to see Painter because that 80 yard drive was the only one this season when I saw a resemblance of the Colts offense, fumbles and mistakes apart. I’ve been so frustrated to only see drives ending in in the red zone or 3 and outs.

Painter is the only answer

AND I never thought I would say that. You play him for the rest of the year. What is he gonna do, LOSE?? And you have him start and get real, valuable playing time and maybe he’ll actually develop as a viable back-up option. If he shows us what we all already think we know, then you absolutely cut him at the end of the year and start over. Collins is here because we thought we could have a chance with him. We obviously don’t. Painter HAS to play (but he won’t whenever Kerry is healthy.)

by SunnyD1988 on Sep 27, 2011 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

For cripes sakes................

Season is out the window, Colts have couple of years invested in Painter. Painter has had almost no reps in practices since he signed his rookie contract. Give Painter his reps, and play him until he plays himself into the two slot, or onto the street. The guy has an NFL arm from what I can see, and what he is lacking can be gained with reps in practice and games that are considered lost by most anyway. Give the kid a legitimate shot.

by tim55 on Sep 27, 2011 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

I agree that we need to give Painter his shot. Maybe last week was nerves. Remember that Peyton went 3-13 his first season. At some point, you have to find out what he brings to the table.

Don't waste your time

Comparing Painter to Manning. I mean, I know you’re really not, but even uttering the phrase, “Remember Peyton [insert fact here]” when thinking of what Painter can be isn’t fair to either party and is a complete waste of time.

I know that he is not the answer but

I was a fan of Brodie Croyle when he was coming out of College. Don’t know a ton about him but I would like to see a young guy step in and possibly grow to be our future QB, maybe Croyle.

4 qbs

it been done? Yes, Tom Brady’s rookie year, the Pats had 4 QBs on their active roster. Brady was in the 4th position on the depth chart.

1) Brady was a 6th round pick from a Big Ten school

 2) Brady was inserted into his first real game in the 4th qtr after an injury to Bledsoe (a veteran QB with a solid but not great career), and lost the game

3) Brady put up crappy numbers in his first couple of starts following that game…though he did whip the Colts, and then lost the following game badly

4) Brady has had long hair

Remind you of anyone? And yes I have been drinking… :-}

The only reason to do this is that Collins is likely done...

Either because he had a concussion and said f-it I want out or his health actually prevents him from playing for the rest of the season. Do the old man a favor and cut him and let him retire.

Painter needs to play the rest of the season – either he’s your backup QB of the future or he’s gone. Either way, figure it out now before the draft.
