2011 NFL Roster Cuts: Report Says Colts Seeking Trade, Retaining Chad Spann

According to John Michael Vincent of Indianapolis radio 1070 The Fan, the Colts will retain running back Chad Spann on the 53-man roster. They are also seeking a trade to augment their roster. No word yet on who they will trade for.

Been told have Rb C Spann on 53 man but they will make a trade to add to the roster and Spann to PS.

The confirmed cuts for the Colts, per this update, are:

DT Tommie Harris

DT Ricardo Mathews

DE John Chick

RB Javarris James

P Travis Baltz

QB Dan Orlovsky

WR Taj Smith

Unconfirmed cuts are Jacques McClendon and Ollie Ogbu.

The waiving of Orlovsky likely means embattled backup Curtis Painter will remain on the Colts active roster. Regarding the reported interest in a trade, if Harris, Ogbu, and Mathews are cut, this leaves the Colts critically thin at the defensive tackle position.

At 6:00 p.m. Eastern, all NFL teams are required to trim their rosters from an 80-man roster limit to 53.

[UPDATE]: JMV just tweeted that Kyle DeVan was cut. If DeVan was cut, but Mike Pollak was kept... then, yeah, that would be pretty damn terrible.

[UPDATE 2]: From Kerry Neal:

@K_Neal56 Kerry Neal
I got cut today by the colts. But my head is still high. Just got to grind harder and hope for the best. #blessed

Also, JMV reporting that Darren Evans will remain on 53-man roster.

I wanted Taj and we all know Orlovsky better than CP and wanted baby James also

same, i thought taj was a decent receiver and orlovsky is way better than CP, this is why the Colts’ backup situation is messed up, they can’t let CP go

This is fucking pathetic

McClendon and Devan cut but Pollak and Richard stay? Did Bill Polian lock his son in a closet and take a handful of ecx? These cut decisions are TERRIBLE.

Colts seeking trade.

We don’t know who, probably Lance Briggs. He’ll come in, get 5 sacks against the Texans then immediately be cut.

by ActionOxford on Sep 3, 2011 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think you can judge anything right now.

Yes, I think if Richard and Brown get to stay while more talented players leave, it is not a good thing for the Colts. The thing is, hundreds of players are being let go today, many of whom would be better than what we have. There is a possibility of a trade. Look at this roster in a couple of days and judge it. It’s pointless to go on a Bill Polian sucks rant when we’ve heard rumors on a handful of players and don’t even know a quarter of the cuts yet.

by strandedincarolina on Sep 3, 2011 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

it may be pointless

but its way more fun than sitting here and not having an opinion.

also it doesnt matter. getting rid of devan over richard is dumb. no matter if devan wouldnt have made the final team anyway

by omahacolt on Sep 3, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is we don't know that richard isn't getting cut.

None of these players are good. They may or may not be better than what we have, but nobody cut is someone I think we will miss too awful much.

I can see that.

We knew either Evans or Spann would be on the PS but not both. If they want Spann on PS that means Evans is on the 53.

Addai, Carter, Evans, and Spann are fine.

by FatDT on Sep 3, 2011 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a bad lineup.

The ACE team were pretty good RBs. Spann is an OK returner.

by ActionOxford on Sep 3, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That would mean Brown is getting traded

Which would be a step back in the right direction after all of these terrible cuts.

Why is Polian doing this to Peyton. I know he doesn’t care about us but come on. Pollak and Richard staying over McClendon and DeVan?

We do need 5 RBs.

I hear we’re incorporating a new formation and play called the “Ball n cup.” Manning will hand it off to one RB who will then run around in a magic circle with the other 4 RBs handing the ball off between each other. The defense will then have to guess which player has the ball.

is cricket organized like the soccer leagues, with each town and hamlet having a team, and successful teams able to move up to higher leagues, while underperforming teams get relegated?

Hah.

It’s about as interesting to watch as a game of cards. Though that WPT stuff can be fun.

Cricket is a really local sport, regardless of whether it’s in the cities or the countryside. It’s very much as you say, with promotions and relegations, yes. There are essentially 2 divisions at the top that people go and watch in great numbers, and after that it dwindles. Massively popular sport though.

i watched that Ashes match a couple years ago with a UK friend

i was stunned to learn that a team might have to voluntarily give up their remaining turns at bat, in order to give the other team a chance on offense to make the game official. It was inconceivable to me that a team would say, “well, that’s enough offense, let’s go play defense.” I enjoyed it, but I’m glad i had the interpreter.

When you put it like that, it sounds lame.

It’s not that they have to do it to make the game official, it’s just that they have to get the other guys out twice in order to win. So putting a load of runs on the board and then declaring to put the other guys in is a vital part of the game.

I love cricket, but it must be so foreign to you guys.

Oh i see. Makes sense. Yeah, it does seem pretty bizarre.

But i think it would be fun to play

is there a perceived advantage in batting 1st or 2nd?

It largely depends on the weather and pitch conditions

After rain, it can be often be difficult to bat for a while, and over the course of 5 days, the pitch tends to develop cracks and become more uneven. In test cricket I would say there is a slight advantage to the team batting first, if you look at the statistics.

is there any football team currently in the UK's highest league

that has climbed there after being promoted twice, say in the last 30-40 years? I mean, has anyone risen from 2 leagues below the top league?

oh yeah, loads.

Fulham were in the 4th tier in the 90’s, rose up to the premiership pretty quickly. Swansea were almost relegated into the 5th tier about 8 years ago, and got promoted into the premier league this season.

Fans of certain clubs can really experience a rollercoaster of a ride.

That is awesome. It's how it should be.

Let the Browns and the Bills etc. go play some college teams to get back into the NFL.

a propos relegation & promotion

i just learned this from the oracle known as wikipedia

Blackpool F.C. hold [sic] the record for being the only club in English football to be promoted through all four divisions via the play-offs.

I had to [sic] that collective plural verb for the American audience. ;- )

If true by Kuharsky, I’m not sure I understand keeping him. He appears to be a lesser Tamme, who is already a poor man’s Dallas Clark. I guess he could be a rich man’s Gijon.

Maybe we’ll go after Reggie White, or maybe Michael Irving. We can probably get a line of cocaine long enough to lure him in here, lol.

I doubt it.

Injury concerns and he’s looked slow. The Pats have a horrible record with receivers.

Most of their receivers were trades or pickups from other teams.

Eldemen (spelling?) is the only one I can think of that did close to anything. Chad Jackson and Brandon Tate have to be labeled busts.

that was funny, but not quite as funny as your signature quote, which is hilarious.
Did you study any other languages before Pashto, and how did it compare as far as learning it?

Pashto was my first. As I understand, its one of the harder one’s in the world. It was pretty rough in the beginning, but got easier after about the 6th month mark, once I started to figure out the sentence structure and grammar. But, I was in class 8 hours a day for 52 weeks, being paid to learn it, not everyone has that luxury, so it can be a little more difficult for other people to learn languages. I have friends that speak Russian, Chinese, Dari, Japanese, and they all say the same, it takes about a solid year of learning really nail it down. Even then you’re not really a master, but when I was in Afghanistan in December, it was like a while new world.

Right out of HS i considered joining up because i really wanted to go to DLI in Monterey, but I’m really a pacifist, so you know…. It is nice to have that classroom support and in-country immersion. I studied Russian for 6 years before living there, and it was still a challenge. I taught myself enough Chinyanja to live in Zambia. I’ve been thinking about Arabic or Dari-Farsi as my next challenge. I always say, I didn’t really understand English until i learned a foreign language.
