Who's Going to Block?

Almost no depth and it means Pollak starts at guard. If one guy goes down Richard comes in. If I was Peyton I would go out !!!!!!

I agree

if I was Peyton, I’d sit out the season. Wait… What?

be interesting to see if he is able to play.

Marlin Jackson waived by the Eagles.

Obviously an injury question, but he’d definitely be welcome back.

Antoine Bethea - the most underrated safety in the NFL.

Would shore up Safety depth

I really hope he comes back…

Wha..??

Harris, McClendon, Devan, and Taj are cut?

Gonzo and Brown are still with the team?

I’m kind of shocked. I thought for sure our lack of quality OL depth would make Jacques untouchable for another season, and that Taj would be Gonzo’s replacement.

by ballistikk on Sep 3, 2011 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

Gonzo must be healthy

Sitting him out in preseason must have been more precautionary than anything. He definitely has a good relationship with Peyton, but will most likely hit the IR as soon as it appears he will miss a game.

If he’s healthy and the benching was precautionary, awesome. You’ll get no complaints from me during the season. But if he’s really hurt and we kept him anyway…

by ballistikk on Sep 3, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He still runs a 4.4 and has great route abilities

I can guarantee that a healthy Gonzo is better than any WR the Colts cut and probably any WR on waivers. Add to that he has chemistry with the QB and I think you had to make that call. He does get injured a lot, but if the Colts cut him, he was going to get picked up and make a difference on another team even if it was only for the first 3-4 weeks of the season. He is worth the risk IMHO. IR him again if he gets hurt and pick up someone else. Otherwise I don’t really see a better option. He hasn’t been PUP’d so they must expect him back early. These decisions have to be about business and not personal grievances from the past.

How many TDs did Manning throw in the preseason? Oh yea, it was 0!!
Orlovsky gets cut but we keep a guy who doesn’t even practice? Geesh. Obviously this is another one of Polian’s moves because he’s afraid to admit he screwed up in the first round of the draft. Chalk up another awful move by the Colts. I just hope we can win a game. Playoffs?

McNeill

need 4 TEs. Could take Tamme’s #3 spot by the end of the year. The guy is an amazing receiving TE. Didn’t he play WR for NU early on?

he is not amazing

i dont know where you got that. i believe he played te, then they moved him to wr and that failed and then the put him back to te

the guy is an average te

by omahacolt on Sep 3, 2011 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I watch a lot of Husker football here is SoDak

He is much better than his stats will show. He runs great routes and has made lots of big plays in the seam like DC does. I had forgotten which way he was first, but I looked it up and you’re right, they moved him to WR. He doesn’t drop balls is fast and runs good routs Again, I think he is overlooked because he played for NU which isn’t known for throwing the ball lately. He hold their TE yards and catches records for a season.

not really

tamme is a very overrated player

by omahacolt on Sep 3, 2011 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Overrated?!?!

Ok PM threw him the ball. That said he shown “his” talents when it was thrown to him ie… catching it, running with it, and scoring TDS. Tamme has been a prime example of competence . He has skills man he performs when called upon. He also looked decent in the pre season. Tamme could actually be of trade value to sure up a few spots(you decide). But hey thats your opinion as this is mine.

Terrence Johnson...

He actually caught my eye in a few of the preseason games. Plays physical jamming the WRs and closed pretty quickly once the ball was thrown. He looked better than Jacob Lacey for sure. He may be a candidate for the practice squad if we find other players off the waiver wire.

I know many of us are emotional about certain players we liked getting cut. It’s natural. Please note that degrading or demeaning others for their opinions is not tolerated here. If you think management is a bunch of dumb f*cks for cutting Tommie Harris, that’s cool. If you think management was smart to cut him, that’s cool too.

Just don’t insult, demean, or belittle the opposing person or persons. That’s all.

Thanks for commenting. Keep it up.

Pollock as a backup ....whatever.

I don’t think he’s that much better than DeVan and McClendon, or that much worse. I don’t see the hate here. Is he a starter, no. Is there anyone who clearly whipped his ass…no. Plus he did an ok job as the back up C. I am a little dissapointed in McClendon. He was given every opportunity and never seized the day.

Y'know, maybe it's the pom-poms speaking

but I’m not as upset as I was a half hour ago. I’m seeing more and more indications that Harris wasn’t setting a good example in the locker room, which I can understand the Colts wary of considering they have a young, talented, impressionable guy like Nevis.

And really, with the dearth of talented OLinemen on this team, did it really matter who we cut?

My only disappointment is that we kept Brown. Gonzo, IF healthy, would give us killer depth at WR, but Brown has had his chance.

I don't disagree with you there

Even first quarter though, he made some nice throws but WRs had some drive killing drops. Let’s not forget that Packers are a top 5 (and maybe even top 3) defense. He doesn’t have a large body of work for us to look at and with the confidence everyone around him seems to have, I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt for now. As BBS would say, I’m drinking the Painter kool-aid.

According to ESPN - (cc'd from their site)

Surprise moves: Tommie Harris seemed to play well enough to stick, but the former first-round defensive tackle apparently wanted to be treated like the team’s top defensive linemen and the team didn’t like the attitude. Defensive end John Chick had solid games but couldn’t get past Jerry Hughes. Undrafted rookie tight end Mike McNeill made it, as did four others who were not April selections: running backs Darren Evans and Chad Spann, linebacker Adrian Moten and safety Joe Lefeged.

Tampa waived Ahmad Brooks. I’d like him. Maybe for the 53 man.

by GonzoBlue on Sep 3, 2011 9:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Ahhh...more front office idiocy

Cutting Harris was allegedly because he wanted to be treated like was the best DT and little Jimmy Caldwell didn’t like it. Um…well seeing as he arguably IS our best DT, or can be this season, it kind of makes sense. Another blunder by dumb and dumber (Caldwell, Polian).

And you know what? I understand keeping Hughes. It’s only year two and it’s hard to give up on a guy just after a season (despite his awfulness). And Brown? I’m okay with that too. James I thought was more deserving and Carter is better, but I will not get upset over this one. Still has time to show something (very little time, though). But Pollak…I mean you’ve gotta be f***ing kidding me!!! By far the most deserving player to be cut, and yet he’s still here while the guy who outplayed him, DeVan, is gone!!!

I mean WOW. What a joke.

Not sure he was best

Nevis was a lot more effective. Harris was good in the few series he was in. He didn’t get a ton of playing time and there wasn’t a very large body of work to evaluate him on. Maybe the Colts didn’t think his injuries were worthy of missing time and that’s where the ‘entitlement’ questions come in.

I won’t disagree with Brown, but it is too early for Hughes. They would have been torn apart for cutting Hughes at this point. Give him a few regular season games and maybe they’ll put him on waivers and sign Chick from the practice squad (if Chick doesn’t get picked up somewhere else first.)

Was White removed from the PUP?

I don’t like that we have two healthy WRs, and three that have been injured…namely Collie, Gonzalez and White.

by strandedincarolina on Sep 3, 2011 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

My guess is they put Gilreath on the PS. He was the best reciever in preseason, but needs more experience. If someone goes down, they can pull him up.

I also think keeping Collie, Gonzo, and White out of the preseason was more precautionary than reactionary.

by TrueBlue87 on Sep 3, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought I read White saying...

he was ready a few weeks ago, then he never came off of the PUP. I think the Colts didn’t think it was worth taking him off the PUP if he couldn’t play catch with Peyton and it gave them a longer look at Gilreath and Brooks. I also think Collie is ready to go, so it’s just Gonzo’s hammy. No way we keep only 5 WR’s if they are uncertain about the health Gonzo, Collie and White.

Colts roster as of Sept 3, by the numbers

So, before we pick up anyone else off waivers or make any trades, it looks we kept:

3 “specialists” : Snow, McAfee, and AV

3 Quarterbacks: Manning, Collins, and Painter

5 Running backs: Addai, Carter, Brown, Spann, and Evans

4 Tight Ends: Clark, Eldridge, Tamme, McNeill

8 Offensive linemen: Costanzo, Diem, Ijilana, Linkenbach, Pollak, Reitz, Richard, Saturday

9 Defensive linemen: Anderson, Brayton, Foster, Freeney, Hughes, Johnson, Mathis, Moala, Nevis

6 Linebackers: Angerer, Brackett, Conner, Moten, Sims, Wheeler

10 Defensive backs: Bethea, Bullitt, Caldwell, Powers, Lacey, Lefeged, Rucker, Thomas, Tryon, and Terrence Johnson

Initial thoughts:
-As reported, we must be making a move of some sort to pick up an additional player off waivers, and when we do we will move one of those 2 last running backs (Spann or Evans) to the practice squad…..because carrying 5 running backs makes no sense in our system.

-I thought we’d keep 9 OL instead of 8, but keeping 8 is ok if you have enough flexible guys who can change positions if need be. Richard’s flexibility ended up saving him a roster spot, even though I thought he’d be cut. If we end up needing another OL guy at some point, Toudouze or McClendon might return off the street….as I am not positive either of them will end up on someone else’s roster.

-Keeping McNeill surprised me some as a 4th tight end, but that seems to indicate that we will run more 2TE packages early in the season that normal and need him for depth, plus our staff seems to like him.

-Despite the outcries from a few on this site, we HAD to keep 3 quarterbacks this year with Manning’s health in question and Collins being new here plus a statue in the pocket. If you only kept 2, that would have been a guaranteed indicator that Manning was 100% ready to go, which is clearly not the case yet. I don’t know that we will keep 3 quarterbacks all season, but for now we clearly had to do that.

-Painter vs Orlavsky battle was interesting but basically irrevelant to our success….neither of them are any good. Painter is in reality better I think but that is damning with faint praise.

-Despite cutting Tommie Harris, our defensive line I think might be the strength of our team. Hughes and Foster both can play special teams, which I think made them more valuable than Harris in the end. Plus, any snaps Harris would have played would have probably meant Drake Nevis wasn’t playing…..and in my mind we need to get that young man on the field more, not less.

-I really liked Chris Brooks and hope he can make the practice squad. I know Taj Smith showed some speed occasionally but he is a reciever who can’t catch the ball well….despite what I heard on talk radio the last few days, I thought he was an obvious cut.

-How good is Terrence Johnson as a DB? I assume he will be basically a special teams guy. You always want to keep alot of DB’s for your coverage units, which is why alot of guys like him make the league each year.

-The defensive backfield in general is a weak spot for us, so if we do add some new players off waivers I think at least one of them might be a corner or safety.

-Who are our return guys with this roster? I’d still like for us to use Donald Brown that way although I know it is doubtful they will take my advice. I assume maybe Evans, Spann, Lefeged or someone else not yet on our roster will get those duties in week one.

-We only kept 6 LB’s for now, so I could see us trying to add a special teams player who also could play linebacker off waivers if someone fits that description. As it is, 6 is an acceptable number if they are all healthy, since teams play 30-45% nickel/dime coverage these days anyway.

Pretty good analysis.

I’ll admit, McNeill was a surprise as well as Terrence Johnson. I see a lot of tweaking still left to do here.

by strandedincarolina on Sep 3, 2011 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

McNeill is a beat

Some people say he’s a poor man’s DC, but he was constantly getting big downfield receptions at NU when there was no one really to throw to him. Had he been playing for Stanford or Missouri last year, he would have been a 2nd round pick.

Also, the Colts only truly have 4 TEs at this point and if they play 2 TE sets early for additional protection early on, they need a #4 guy. You can’t consider Snow a real TE. That’s just silly…

I liked him and thought he would be a good PS player.

I was surprised because he’s a receiving TE behind two pretty good receiving TEs.

by strandedincarolina on Sep 3, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree..

Also, on McNeil – I think Eldridge is coming off two knee surgeries, so they may need that 4th TE who can block to play for the 3rd TE.

And, regarding the defensive line – I think we all got a bit carried away seeing the number of quallity guys we had in camp and forgot that they just can’t keep that many. Each player has to make sense in the overall roster. Things like the ability to play multiple positions or special teams come into play when you are looking at the last person in a position group.

Kyle DeVan was the dumbest cut

He was better than Pollak and Richard for sure, but if they sign him to PS then its all good.

Tommie Harris should have made the roster, him paired with Mookie would have made a great run stopping duo, plus they can penetrate n the pass rush also.

I’m happy that Ernie Sims and Adrian Moten are our new LBs, them boys can cover quite well

Anybody recall Polian saying McClendon will be starting next yr? I thought this guy should have never been drafted out of TN but he changed my mind this yr and played well when given the opp’t. I don’t know how you can give up this guy so soon when he really in my opinion out played Reitz. Also Spann should’ve been relegated to the PS. Alfalva should’ve stuck over Caldwell. By the looks of this roster, there will be a heavy emphasis on max protection and the run game as they ease Peyton back in at some point. The problem is the FO keeps the wrong personnel. To their credit a couple of pooh butts are history but we still have too many to be solid. Finally, I think Harris may be back after the 1st week. They just don’t want to guarantee his salary while they guarantee Collins $4M..duh!,

It is funny how fast people forget When De Van started on our line we had one of the worst rushing averages in the league. Not saying it’s all his fault BUT he sucked just like the rest of the scrubs we kept. So what I have noticed on here is that it is ok to keep a scrub as long it is a scrub we like. We had ONE legit person on our line RIGHT now, and that is Saturday. The rest of them dudes are bench players on any other team. I keep reading about Harris, I do agree he played well in the preseason, but him being cut means NEVIS gets more playing time and I am all for that. SNOW did not get cut, we have 5 TE on the roster right now, i am more pissed about that. I wouldn’t lose too much sleep on the DL because we have 6 Good Linebackers on this roster. If we don’t bring in a Veteran to lead these young DB we will lose a lot of close games, that is our biggest weakness. Manning will get the ball out fast, so he won’t let those clowns in front of him get him killed. but if we can’t get pressure up front, our secondary will get exposed.

by Naptown808 on Sep 4, 2011 5:59 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Response

Snow is a specialist, not a TE. I wish everyone would just realize that and move on.

6 Good Linebackers? I honestly don’t see 1 good LB on this roster that would start for another team

Agree 100% about the DB situation. It is dangerously close to being absolutely terrible. Lacey is garbage. I’m not saying he should be cut, but he shouldn’t even be the nickel back. They need an upgrade at CB in a big way. That is my biggest concern moving forward.

Not concerned about WR if White is healthy.

Snow??

What does snow specialize in, because I am lost. unless he specialize in circle jerks in the locker room, he will not see the field. So Sims started for Lions and Eagles, Bracket is a top ten middle linebacker EASILY. Who has more interception than Lacey since he was drafted…don’t worry, I’ll wait. He attacks the ball in the Air, and he is the only person in our secondary that attacks. YES he get’s toasted, ALOT but when he does break on it, he picks it. Is lacey a starter….ummmmm NO but he is the second best on the roster TODAY. He will be unseated but not by Tryon, but Thomas.
