Jeff Maehl

We all know Gonzo's issues....I have full confidence that Austin Collie will play the whole season....who knows that the deal is with Blair White (Good news is he was taken off PUP, which means they thought he would be back before week six). I feel a serviceable option would be Jeff Maehl, WR, Oregon who was recently cut by the Texans. He lacks top end speed but he makes up for it in precise route running and great hands.

Jeff Maehl

This guy could be next Austin Collie in my eyes. I think if we sign a free agent receiver though its gonna be a guy whos been around the league for a few years or Gilreathe from the practice squad (if we sign him)

Oregon sure could have used him last night

I am not sure how he performed in camp (obviously cut) but I watched him in college and liked him. While his 40 is very average he was extremely fast and one of the best in skilled drills at the combine e.g cone and shuttle drills.

Great insight

I’ll try to provide some thought though:

I really liked Maehl coming out of college, he looked exactly like a Collie clone. He doesn’t seem to play quite as fast, but he always has a knack of getting open, and has reliable hands.

It’s not encouraging that he couldn’t stick with the Texans, who lack quality WR depth, so maybe his game hasn’t adjusted to the speed of the NFL. Definitely worth a look though..

why

do most colts fans fall in love with every slow white wr with good hands?

in the back of your mind

I was wondering

Why most Colt’s fans wanted washed up slow black receivers (aka TO or Moss).

Seriously, if someone can play, who cares on race.

LOL

The Indianapolis Colts are going to be the 1st team to win a super bowl in their own stadium. 'nuff said.

Taking white out of the equation,

most Colts fans fall in love with every slow WR with good hands because a WR is paid to do one thing, which is to catch the ball. I slow WR who catches the ball is better than the inverse, a fast WR who does not catch the ball. It’s quite simple, really.

Plus, give Peyton somebody who can catch the ball, no matter how slow they are, and the Colts will get yardage nearly automatically. Give him a fast WR that can’t catch and it doesn’t matter how perfect of a throw it is, the Colts get no yardage.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

On top of that

The NFL is a league of fads. When Moss came in everyone wanted a big, tall, fast deep threat. Then D coordinators started planning to neutralize guys like that (time obviously truncated here) which opens up the underneath routes. Now everyone wants a Wes Welker, or for us, Brandon Stokely.

It’s less about being slow with good hands (or white whatever that has to do with anything) than it is about there is a niche in the NFL WR position right now. There just happens to be a glut of slow, white guys with good hands to fill it.

Imagine where we would be if ...

… Garcon had a pair of hands … remember a critical drop in the SB? Just catch the damn ball!!!

So are you suggesting we do not consider Tyler Hansbrough

as our version of Plaxico Burress as a red zone receiver?

Colts fans fall in love with every available player.

And “taking a look at an available FA WR” is hardly falling in love with the guy.

As I said before, he reminded a lot of people of Austin Collie, but maybe 1/2 step slower. Some thought that lack of speed wouldn’t be a problem, some thought it would.

Being cut by a team that needs WR depth is obviously concerning, but I guarantee you the Colts have looked into Maehl at one point in time.

Next time, try to put some actual insight, research, or thought into your responses instead of a simple No Thanks.

next time

dont tell others how to post

a lot of times your insight isnt what i would call insight

by omahacolt on Sep 4, 2011 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh

So what do you consider insight…

So far, I’ve provided a scouting report on Jeff Maehl, a realistic NFL outlook on Jeff Maehl, and a legitimate reason for concern for Jeff Maehl.

And you’ve added, “No Thanks”.

So once again – what do you call insight?

Are you blind?

Again, I’ve provided a scouting report on Maehl, a realistic NFL outlook on Maehl, and a legitimate reason for concern for Maehl. And you’ve added – “No Thanks, he’s white”.

Gotchya.

thats not a quote

i never said “no thanks, he’s white”

by omahacolt on Sep 5, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

In all seriousness

There is no race equation in my argument…im just saying he could be a serviceable option…disagree?…look at his combine numbers aside from his 40 (top 1 or 2 in all WR categories)…not sure why he hasnt been able to catch the eye of some team….he caught my eye the last two seasons at Oregon and in the combine he was more impressive than everyone except AJ Green. Im not making the argument that he would come in and start day 1….im saying he would proivde depth…after all who thought Blair White would be what he was….not many prediceted what Collie and Garcon have done either….on another note…New Orleans cut S Deandre McDaniel from Clemson…who also might be able to provide depth at our weak safety spots…another UDFA who might be able to make an impact at least on special teams….how might the race card get pulled on this one….also look out for OL Kristopher O’Dowd from USC and others to be signed with the Likes of McClendon going to the Lions and Devan to the Eagles….Mudd must have mudded in his pants when he found out the Colts cut Devan in favor of Richard and Pollack…

by nstuber on Sep 4, 2011 5:45 PM EDT reply actions

Dang you are on point with guys you want.

i really like mcdaniel and would have loved for him to be a texan, i aslo think O’dowd is really underated. sorry guys but we got Maehl on our practice team now. I like the guy and really think he could have took over david anderson spot for us.

by southpaw70 on Sep 4, 2011 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I called the McDaniel addition...

O’Dowd probably wont get signed because of Pollack and Richard being listed at center…
