Get it together

Many of you are already talking about next years pick and how great it would be to have the number one slot and grab the heir to Manning. I recognize that most of you are not suggesting that we tank intnetionally for this outcome, however even the thought or discussion is way too premature.

Think back to the SB season and remember how we limped into the playoffs with the defense cratering. Note that I didn’t say “with that horrible defense”. They sure were not horrible in the playoffs. Think back to how many of us viewed the Colts chances to advance. Sure, we would score points, but with that defense, and the scorching defenses that loomed in front of us, it was not going to be enough. Now, think how you are feeling right now about the Colts chances.

Star-divide

Of course it will be easy to dissect the defensive roster of that season and compare it to what we have in place right now, just days before our first game, but that is ultimately impossible because we don't KNOW what we have right now. Many of these players are new to the Colts, and some will advance their game and some will likely retreat.

However, I am still compelled to reach back to the days before the playoffs after that awful display of defense. Remember, it was a multiple game stretch. As a fan I decided ahead of time that we were going get creamed by Larry Johnson who at the time was a beast of a running back. It was was an awesome win by the Colts, but I will always regret that as a fan I EXPECTED to lose. It has been much more fun and rewarding as a fan to approach each game with optimism and looking for how we are going to overcome the strengths the opposition presents. .I will never go into a single game expecting to lose, and certainly not an entire season. Never.

When is the time to talk about next year's pick? Well, that depends on our record. It could be as early as late October, or it could be February, after a great season. Do whatever you want, but until I see otherwise, I'm assuming we are picking in the 20's again.

Go Colts!
