SBnation 2012 Mock Draft

Greetings Stampede Blue, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SBnation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, (and not wishing to watch the Giants delve deeper into the post season) I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SBnation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Indianapolis Colts in this Draft, who currently hold the 1st overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Now for a few quick rules.

Rules:

1) There will be no trading picks. Trading picks would be both complicated, and time consuming, so everyone will just stay put at their set draft position.

2) Submit your votes for the player of your choice as soon as possible. After 3 days the results of the poll will be final, Stampede Blue will submit its pick at 8pm on 1/21/12, and Turf Show Times will be on the clock.

3) If you feel as though I have left a player out that deserves consideration as your teams draft selection, then let me know in the comments section, and I will gladly add them.

4) Any draft talk (or argument) that is to be made pertaining to your Colts' pick, feel free to make in the comments section.

5) ******** Be sure to rec this post so that it will remain under the recommended fan post section for everyone to see, and so that they are able to cast their vote *********

Hopefully this can be a fun experience for all of SBnation, as well as provide insight into the upcoming NFL draft. Be sure to vote and get the ball rolling so that the rest of SBnation can participate. Thanks for your time, and good luck in the upcoming season. Stampede Blue is now on the clock!

Agreed

If we can’t trade the pick, at least we can trade him later this way.

Agreed

MUST trade for butt load of players!

There have been numerous articles on reasons we will not be able to afford multiple first round picks and Manning. Drafting Luck isn’t about trading the pick, its about reassuring a strong future for the franchise. Unfortunately Colts fans don’t understand the clock workings of the business inside the NFL. I love Manning and what he’s done for this club but, he’s forcing our hand to release him. Like it or not Peyton will not be with the Colts next year. Luck will ease the transition to the next era in Indianapolis.

We can't afford...

The #4 and #22 picks – but we CAN afford the #1 pick?

Also, the #1 pick would be a QB, and would command a higher salary than, say, a WR/CB/DT if we traded down.

What

Why can’t they afford #4 & #22? New CBA has guidelines. NO more huge contract coming out of collage. Why do we need to draft QB with #4? Key to a Great GM is finding talent in later rounds.IE: Brady chosen in I believe Rnd 5! How many #1 overall picks have Superbowl rings???

That's my point...

I was saying that Dann Gisz’s comment about not being able to afford multiple 1st round picks was bad logic, considering it would probably cost roughly the same amount as the #1 overall pick.

I’m all for trading the #1 pick for a King’s Ransom.

How so?

The odds are that we would only have one first round pick this season. Then, multiple picks the next two. There are plenty of contracts that will be cut off the books this offseason. That will lead to more flexibility next offseason. Also, if the picks are in the 10-16 range, they can still grab a difference maker while paying half of what they would pay for Luck.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000d5d82104d44/article/signing-status-of-2011-nfl-draft-firstround-picks

The money would also be going to someone who is actually playing. Luck wouldn’t even get to play until his rookie contract is up, and Manning’s contract expires.

Also, the Saints are about to give Brees the same amount of money. Brady makes the same amount per year. Those teams have managed to build full rosters. The contract can stay on the books while building a great team. I know it’s a “what have you done for me lately” league, but it’s absolutely disgusting to see so many people completing forgetting that Manning is worth more than his contract paid him.

He missed his first games of his career, and everybody is ready to kick him to the curb. If he had played this season, everybody would be talking about restructuring/cutting Freeney, Brackett, Clark, Bullitt, and Addai. Nobody would be saying, “Let’s cut Manning. That will free up a lot of cap space.”

Everybody has their opinion. We all will probably get to wait until pretty close to that March 8th deadline to find out what will happen. The greatest player ever or the most hyped up player ever? I’ll take the greatest while capitalizing off of the hype. I do feel that Luck will be good to great in the NFL. Peyton is the best. There are ways to massage the cap. Nothing is set in stone, yet.

Very interesting points

I’ve always wondered what the Colts fan base’s perspective was on the whole Luck/Manning situation. I myself would be looking toward the future, and I feel that as an Eagles fan I can kinda sorta relate because we just let go of Mcnabb a few years ago, and that was a tough decision at the time. Not to say that Mcnabb is anywhere near what Peyton is, but the situation is similar. We ended up making the right decision in the end, and although Peyton has been the center piece of your organization for over a decade, I feel as though there comes a point in time where a franchise has to move on. That being said I would be all for both retaining Peyton and drafting Luck. Luck will benefit greatly from Peyton’s tutelage, this would be an experience that in my mind is invaluable to a young quarterbacks development, to learn from one of the games greatest.

My overall feelings are that if it comes between Peyton and Luck, there really is no choice but to choose Luck. The Colts are going through turmoil right now not only as a team, but as an organization, and Peyton I don’t think is going to bring you guys another SB in the last few years of elite play he has left. Andrew Luck could eventually be that guy in a few years however. It’s time to start building a team for the future. Most of your best players are older (Saturday, Freeney, Peyton, Clark, Wayne) so start fresh, and bring in a coach who can build a team from the ground up. Every team has to rebuild eventually, it’s the NFL lifecycle.

As far as cutting Peyton to free up cap space.. I wouldn’t be on board with that. Like I said IMHO his presence is detrimental to Luck’s success in the league.

His contract

With the $28 million bonus he would receive, you would be keeping him for four years. He would not be a one or two year mentor for that price. That is why it’s not overly logical to keep them both. I am in the “trade the pick” camp, but my main desire to see only one of them on the roster. If they decide to build for the future with Luck, then they should cut Manning. If they keep him, then trade the pick.

by PeytonTheManning on Jan 20, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Ok don’t know why I didn’t realize the cap hit would be that huge. In that case I agree, you probably can’t keep both. You’re probably better off bringing in someone like Joe Lombardi as the OC to help groom Luck rather than keep manning at tat price.

Sorry I ran a little late finalizing the pick

But the pick is in and Andrew Luck is the clear choice! Thank you all for participating and giving everyone some insight, Turf show times will soon be on the clock, I will be sure to keep you all updated in the fanshots section every 5 picks or so if you are interested. Best of Luck (pun intended) getting the player you want in the upcoming draft!
