Colts Press Conference Announcing Firing Of Bill And Chris Polian- Open Thread

The firing of Bill and Chris Polian today is as big a news story as any game played this year by the Colts. Thus, the 5:00 p.m. press conference the Colts have scheduled today to discuss the firings should get an open thread.

WISHtv.com is streaming the news conference live for those of you not in the Indianapolis area.

Let's talk names...

Who’s your new GM, Head Coach? Are you changing OC and DC too?

I think Murphy deserves a shot at being the D Co-ordinator next year. Christensen should go as offensive co-ordinator though. Maybe bring in Norv Turner to replace him…

Fisher and Gruden

I think those two will get looked at for coach just because they are excited about coming to Indy, not just excited about getting a head coaching job. Fisher has expressed interest that he would love to coach the Colts before any of this happened. Gruden gets a boner every time he talks about Manning, Freeney, Mathis. Now some of that will depend on if some of these veterans are resigned or released. I think the energy that either of them has would be a positive for the organization. Something we have not had in a long time. Just my thoughts.

In terms of offense

I think we want to keep it the same, (assuming we keep Peyton, of course). If we got Jeff Fisher (cross your fingers) he will bring in his defense from Tennessee

Anybody else listening to the reporters that are gathering...

for the press conference? Two of them are talking about webpage hits and all the sports casters are doing lead ins. Kinda funny.

Nice to see an owner making these announcements...

Instead of a Director of Football Operations. Makes the team feel more personal.

Anybody else notice that he is only talking about Bill...

And hasn’t mentioned Chris at all, other than to say he was fired.

I noticed.

I also noticed that I think he set a new record for the use of the sounds ‘ugh’ and ‘umm’.

Yes...

I’m sure he has.

I noticed that too

And thought that was very telling regarding his opinion about Chris!

Even the direct question about Chris...

He avoided saying why he fired Chris.

Again...the last question could have led directly to Chris...

No mention. The Succession plan was in place and then changed.

by emiller17 on Jan 2, 2012 5:14 PM EST reply actions

Subtle hints in comments....

While saying he’s not contacted any GM prospects yet…He did say “I’m excited about our new direction…” Me thinks he’s had some arms-length talks with potential candidates. It’s too knee jerk to fire them without any backup plan and Irsay has been a great owner since taking over the team; he’s got a plan in place.

by cmgww on Jan 2, 2012 5:14 PM EST reply actions

He said he would start making calls as early as tonight.

He also said it might take several weeks to hire a new GM, but I think he knows who he wants. My guess is out of professional courtesy he will not make any offers until a playoff team is out of the playoffs before he announces his decision. That is saying he is looking for a new GM that is currently on a playoff team. Which I hope he is doing.

by Colts Forever on Jan 2, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Is that realistic?

I think it’s a nice sentiment, but if Mckenzie from Green Bay is on the list he might not be available until February.

Jim, what do you say to the players that are currently on the team?

With a new GM what style of football do you want to seen played?

by MBApastor on Jan 2, 2012 5:21 PM EST reply actions

I don't think that can be answered until...

1) we know where Peyton is health wise.

2) we know who the new GM/Head Coach is.

Sounds like we're keeping Caldwell

Only until Irsay or the new GM chooses someone better

by mkehoosier on Jan 2, 2012 5:25 PM EST reply actions

Caldwell is gone.

Nobody thinks he’s a top coach. What new GM would want to bet his career on Jim “deerintheheadlights” Caldwell?

Quarterback, General Manager and Head Coach as pillars of the franchise.

In that order is my guess…

Obviously, this revolves around as Peter King said being a “family decision.” Peyton = family. Bill = the trust fund manager.

What about Dennis Polian?

Did Irsay boot all of the Polians?

by Ayrshire on Jan 2, 2012 5:29 PM EST reply actions

It's still fairly amazing

that Bill Polian got his kid hired as GM. It’s laughable when you stop and think about it. But, the same could be said for hiring Caldwell. Let’s hope for an era of better decisions.

by Ayrshire on Jan 2, 2012 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

About that

One of the reporters talked to a few personnel people around the league today and the general consensus was that he’s not qualified to do more than scout at this point in his career.

by mkehoosier on Jan 2, 2012 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

There was also talk about him

being a ‘toxic’ force, which doesn’t surprise me a bit. He didn’t get the job honestly and therefore shouldn’t be allowed to keep it. It’s like letting illegal aliens stay here in America even though they snuck into the country….simply because they’ve evaded the law for a certain length of time.

They refer to 2-14 as "missing the playoffs" and "a losing season"

instead of more appopriate terms like “trainwreck” or “dumpster fire.”

'Jim Caldwell's not an up and down coach'.

No, he’s not. A cardboard cut-out is not an up and down coach either.

this is my honest opinion on caldwell

he’s a good coach during the week of practice but on gameday i don’t want him anywhere near the game.

One big move was enough for today

Give Irsay all the credit for that,, get a great GM and a great head Coach

by OBGYNOSUPREME on Jan 2, 2012 5:44 PM EST reply actions

Mr. Irsay

I’m loving the moves but no way Polians go and Caldwell isn’t shown the door as well. Coldwell is NOT the person to groom your young franchise QB. I don’t see how you can keep the current staff and Luck has to learn a new offense when Peyton leaves. I say just cut ties with Manning. Yes, he MIGHT play another 2 great years but we are looking at 10-15 with Luck. Implement an offense similar to what the Saints,Packers run, pop some pop corn and enjoy the show!!
