Peyton Manning Speaks
Here is an article that just went up on the Indy Star website. I don't have time to write a whole article. I'm sure one of my colleagues will do that today.
Here are Highlights:
Irsay, not Grigson, will determine Peyton's future.
Manning is not on the cusp of retirement.
West 56th Street is a tough place to be right now.
Manning wants to play in the same place his whole career.
Manning doesn't know what his injury status will be come March 28th.
Manning is throwing with equipment guys.
On when the meeting will happen with the Colts:
"I'm in the facility every day," he said. "I'm right there. They know where to find me."
Break down to follow.

New Patriots Controversy
Just in from CBS in Philadelphia: Billy Cundiff was interviewed about the last seconds of the AFC title game. He voiced his opinion that on that final drive, he had to rush in to make that field goal try with just a few seconds left, and didn’t have time to get set. He said the reason for this was that on the last drive, the scoreboard wasn’t displaying the correct down. He thought it was third down when the offense began signalling frantically for him to get on the field.
I hope the league investigates this, and if guilty, void the Patriot’s AFC championship.
wow.
i don’t know if the kicker not paying attention could void a championship but it is interesting.

Story on Ravens site at NFL.com
Cundiff said his sideline routine was different depending on what the down was, and he was caught by surprise.
The issue here is that players are partially dependent on what the scoreboard and 30-second clock show. If the Patriots were in control of the scoreboard, was the screwup deliberate?
Certainly the league would never revoke a championship for this type of incident, but only because they would need to save face. Any team that visits Foxboro should know that any kind of dirty trick is possible.
yeah i guess the real game of the NFL is how to cheat and not get caught
i still wonder if the NFL is fixed when dudes blow easy kicks like that.
i hope cundiff didn’t get too many death threats

You're an idiot
if your team is confused in such an important situation, you should probably call timeout. it was poor coaching. plus, the stadium scoreboards are not official and were only implemented into the game to make it more fan-friendly
by Coltsfan1345 on Jan 24, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions
What was the coach doing?
I find this a rather implausible excuse. Each team is responsible for keeping count of downs. The guy shanked it and now people are making excuses. I dislike the Pats as any self-respecting Colts fan would, but come on…lame excuse. Cundiff blew it. Period.
The NFL runs the scoreboard during the playoffs
I’m pretty sure. But don’t let that stop you.
Oklahoma State will beat LSU in the National Title game by more than 7 points.
Sigh....
Not sure why Grigson is treating Manning like a box of old poptarts…

I agree that he is busy. I would also wonder if Irsay has let him know, coaches are your priority. I will make the decision on Manning, so you do not need to need to engage him. It is not like Grigson and Manning need to play Golf or go to Harry & Izzies together or something.
I do like that Manning wants to be a Colt. I am still hoping for him to be back next year. I do want Luck and I hope they can figure it all out. Doubt it. But I will be positive!
But Still
I understand there are other matters to conclude within the organization but still you reach out to the face of the franchise. It’s just the professional thing to do. Oh well… Glad Peyton is getting back on the grind.

I agree, this whole lack of communication
with Peyton is very disturbing. Grigson, should be picking Manning’s brain quite a bit, I would think. Plus, how cool would it be to go talk football at St. Elmo’s with the greatest player in league history.
No, I totally agree that you should stop off and see players… but I am just thinking for a logistics standpoint. Grigson is in the offices and Manning on the field which are not exactly next together.
Grigson doing all this releases & evaluation probably figures Manning is doing his thing and as soon as he has a chance he will swing by and say Hi. Manning probably figures, no need to go meet the new boss, he is probably busy enough.
I agree, AND I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE, that if one of us were Manning’s new boss… I would be planning a ‘Man Date’ of Golf, Drinks, throwing the ball around on the field with Manning and grabbing dinner at St. Elmos, Ruth Chris and Moes!! LOL.
But just like my current job, we have a new director who is directly in charge of us and it took one month before we met him formally only because he was getting caught up to speed. He wanted to handle his job first, find out everything and then meet us. Not just walk in and have nothing to contribute.
Not to mention, the season was over before Grigson arrived, not like there is a formal way of saying Hi to everyone.

Probably, because he has more football knowledge than anyone

Right thing
Irsay knows Peyton much better than Grigson and this has to be Irsay’s decision with Peyton,, but yes Grigson should be offering to take Peyton out to lunch everyday to pick his brain about all the other Colt players take advantage of Peyton’s knowledge !!!! Grigson has been told Irsay is handling Peyton and Grigs is dealing with the business at hand of rebuilding The Colts without Peyton until he knows different. He’s far too busy and has a lot on his plate to buy Peyton lunch everyday, plus Peyton has earned well over 100mil in his career, he can buy his own! LOL

Can't have it both ways fans...
You wanted Polian and Caldwell gone. That likely meant Manning goes too. You wanted the team to rebuild after going 2-14…you want defensive talent and for the Colts to build a TEAM not a one man show. Well the first step is swapping a QB with a huge cap hit and uncertain health for what many think will be a young stud that will play for 1/4 the pay.
This is what you asked for…
by (206)NightRidah on Jan 24, 2012 1:08 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
I know I’m okay with letting Manning go it shouldn’t have come to this but then again the Polians needed to be reined in years ago and Caldwell should’ve never been hired.
I fault Irsay most of all for letting it get to this point. The fact it took him this long to realize the Polians were becoming toxic is rather disturbing.
I’m open to the changes because its inexcusable to be 2-14 without one player.
Young stud who may turn out to be the next Ryan Leaf...
Trading 18 would be snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

funny you said "what many think "
will be a young stud.. The key word is THINK. No gaurantees all risk and possibly no reward, Manning gone and years of 2-5 wins followed. The right thing would be to get better on defense through the draft. The only sure thing as can be seen in the playoffs that you can’t win without a good defense no matter how good your QB is..
No guarantees that any defensive players drafted will be worth a crap either...
Just sayin’.

No guarantees at all
No guarantee that Manning will ever be the same player he was previously.
No guarantee that he won’t immediately re-injure his neck if he does play again.
No guarantee that any of the picks we would acquire in trading out of the #1 pick would pan out.
You can’t run a football team scared of things that might not work out.
I'm most concerned about your point #2.
One hit could do him in. I’d hate to see that. But, I want him back, anyway.
On this notion that the neck is brittle
because of these surgeries, it isn’t. There is no instance where a hit like he has taken for years would instantly end his career. Just not the case. The first injuries weren’t caused by a hit but by years of work and repeated wear. A vicious hit brings its own problems, but doctors have said he could take hits and not suffer major issues.

I think the best thing we can hope for is, of course, a healthy Manning first and foremost.
If Manning’s healthy, the only way he stays with the team (which it sounds like he wants to do) is if he restructures his contract. I think he would definitely be willing to accept less money to stay with the Colts – he’s done this before, so why wouldn’t he do it again?
All that being said, even if Manning stays put, I can’t see him staying with the Colts longer than a single season if we use the top pick on Andrew Luck. I think Manning restructures his deal for a fraction of the cost to the franchise, the Colts use the #1 pick on Andrew Luck, and then Irsay will make the toughest decision of his career and trade Manning to the NY Jets (or some other team that’s a QB away from contending) after the 2012 season for at least as much as the Raiders got for Palmer.
I am a veteran of the Internet - I will suffer fools gladly. And then mock them. And then post cat pictures.
That doesn't make any sense
Why bring him back for one year? This team isn’t near a SB even with him…that’s one year of experience for Luck wasted. (If) healthy wherever he goes Manning plays as long as he wants to 2,3 or even 5 years…
If he came back and threw 35TDs. Why would the Colts then pull the plug?
by (206)NightRidah on Jan 24, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions
Bring him back for a couple reasons:
1) let Luck marinate for a season under the GOAT
2) Prove to potential trade partners Manning can still endure a full season, post-surgery
Maybe make it a 2-year deal if the think Manning will come back and toss 35 TDs – either way, I can’t see him staying in town longer than that if we draft Luck.

One or the other...
Manning if healthy will want to play so Indy would just be delaying another year or two…
They could just end this by trading Luck for RG3 and picks. Then they could bolster the D and Manning plays until he is ready to retire…you have RG3 who is talented but needs to sit because he never played in a pro style…if Manning stays healthy they reload and make another run hopefully.
Everyone wins

This article is a PR move by Peyton
Manning is preparing to not be a Colt and wants to make Grigson and Irsay the bad guys… Unless he isnt healthy enough to play then he will retire. ASA the new HC is hired and he fires Clyde, Peyton is as good as gone IMO.

If Peyton ends up going to another team,
it will be a grave injustice to the guy who put the city on the map in the sporting world…..auto racing excluded.
if Peyton does go to a contender SF or Baltimore just to say so
I for one will be very happy for him and hope he wins 3 more! The Colts are cleaning house, have a new vision of the future and judging from the talent and high contracts of the Colts veteran/older players, its a 3 to 4 year journey to the playoffs during this rebuild. I am not that selfish of a Manning fan to not want the best for him BECAUSE all that he has done for Indpls. The only injustice is making Manning stay and lose for the remainder of his playing days and alienate Luck to pull an Elway.
If I was Luck, I want to play from day one and have to follow Mannings legacy because I have all the skills and I’m confident I can be successful in the NFL… Luck has been marinating in a Pro system and is clearly the most polished QB to come out of the draft in recent memory. (just I type this, the colts will prolly take RG3… :-)

It's not an all-or-nothing situation
and it never was. This is the Polian garbage mindset. “We can’t pay other teams’ players because it might not work out and that is scary. So let’s spend all the money on our own players even if they don’t deserve it and it screws up our cap situation. At least we know what we have.”
Clyde sucks anyway

by OBGYNOSUPREME on Jan 24, 2012 2:08 PM EST up reply actions
how did you come to that conclusion?
Clyde is not the one throwing the ball. If manning was in there would you have assessed him differently? Clyde makes the call but the execution is on the players..
Because
he ran the offense and didn’t change it at all for most of the season, despite Painter not being 1/100th of the player Manning is. I wasn’t impressed with his play calling either but not changing the offense through 13 games is enough to get him fired IMO. I’m not sure what the Colts are waiting on.
polian could have been telling him not to adjust.
same way he got rid of tryon
all to snake our way to the top pick
so maybe clyde’s hands were tied like everyone else’s?

Possibly true
but does that mean he should keep his job? It didn’t save Caldwell.
It could be
That the one thing that irsay wants to continue is the offense. And without Peyton that’s tough to do for sure… but if there’s a guy who could learn it, it’s probably Luck. If Luck is drafted, I believe Clyde is the new era’s Tom Moore(not saying the two are comparable, just that Manning having the same OC for the majority of his career helped).
bbd
I agree, this smells like a pr piece if Ive ever smelled one. I hope that I am dead wrong, but, I have a feeling Peyton is out of indy. I dont think Irsay is in a big hurry to announce it either. Look how long Peytons injury dragged out before we got the truth. Id imagine Irsay waits til some point before the deadline and calls it. Hope Im wrong.

It works both ways
For all we know Peyton is ready to play and both GM and Irsay know. I’m pretty sure Irsay knew about Peytons injury before he decided to agree on the contract. Kept him on roster in the hope that they could make a run without him till ready. Chances are he was ready towards the end but the season was a bust. They make all the excuses why he shouldn’t play but persist not to put him in IR. My bet we are in for a surprise come draft day.

He sounds ready to move on
It’s a great interview and he is a class guy. He sounds like he’s prepping himself to go elsewhere. Likely scenario:
—Not 100% healthy by March 8, Colts say they have no choice but to release him.
—He then gets 100% healthy and signs with another team around May/June, plenty of time to get acclimated. Arizona would be a great landing spot.

I want to keep PM. But this is business…
It’s not as if the just kicked him out for no reason. He got injured, the team collapsed, we all realize the team was built wrong and full of overpaid aging vets. They paid him last year knowing he couldn’t play…they fired a bad coach and past prime front office…

If Luck is Smart ...
… and concerned with his own legacy, he’ll JUMP at the chance to sit behind the GOAT for a couple of years and soak up all the knowledge he can before it’s his turn. Being that well prepared before the reins are handed over would do more for his future success – his legacy – than being thrown into the fire immediately. Plus, it also gives the new coaches, draftees and free agents time to really gel for a couple of years and then Luck is handed a SB ready team. In the meantime, Peyton tutors him and carries this NON SB ready team for the next 2 years. PM gets 5th POY award next year, retires the year after, Luck and the Colts five-peat the SB and it becomes the team Peyton built in the house Peyton built, Grigson is hailed as a genius, Irsay is vindicated for all these moves and the new statue of PM outside the Luke becomes the State Christmas tree each year. Write it down.
Look at Aaron Rodgers in GB. No, he wasn’t a #1 pick but he sat behind a damned good QB for a while and LEARNED until it was his turn. He has always had talent but that learning process was invaluable. That has worked well for GB, WHY NOT in Indy?
This search for a coach and Mannings comments
Are unsettling to me. They are interviewing too many people an it looks as if management doesn’t know who they want. When they whacked Caldwell they should have had a replacement candidate or two already in place…Mannings comments are ominous…people are on eggshells and it doesn’t seem like business is being handled…
I am beginning to appreciate some of the things Polian did a little more…doesnt mean he should have stayed but I have a feeling that Irsay isn’t very organized or consistent. He is clearly the man calling shots now…
by (206)NightRidah on Jan 24, 2012 9:45 PM EST reply actions
I also think
it could be that they’re interviewing people to get a sense for the entire staff. Could be a DC/OC in the mix as well as the HC.
I hope so
Because it looks embarrassing to me. The Colts are a really good franchise with a great QB situation a great fanbase a great facility and an owner who will pay to keep players…
They have some issues with Manning/Luck the cap and the D…but they should be able to get whowever they really want…

Manning/Luck is not a bad situation to have
Yeah it’s a tough decision, but on one hand you’ve got in my opinion the greatest QB ever for a couple more years or the most promising QB prospect in a long time on your team. Either way, you’re set at the most important position in football, and everything else goes from there.

Clyde Christensen is the lynch pin
If and ever when he is let go we will know that Peyton’s time in Indy is up. As long as he is still on the staff I will continue to believe that Manning will be brought back.
I Agree
The only reason he hasn’t been let go now is because we still don’t know what’s up with Peyton. No Peyton, No Clyde. Yes Peyton, Yes Clyde. They wouldn’t hit the restart button (hire new OC) with Peyton especially if he’s coming back. Which sucks because I absolutely can’t stand Mr. Tecmo Bowl, Wide Reciever screen play callin Christensen! Who knows though, stranger things have happend.
