Now that the 2011 season is behind those of us who are Colts fans, what the Colts will do with the top pick in the 2012 draft has lays at the forefront of conversation. Many believe the team will take Luck with that pick as he is touted as the nation's best prospect at the position. I am a big fan of Luck and agree with most that he will be a great QB at the next level. That being said, I really didn't see any other college QBs entering the draft that could rival him. That all changed after I watched footage of Baylor QB Robert Griffin III aka RG3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TADo6WFgndU
I know what many of you are thinking: "Oh he's another run 1st QB like Micheal Vick." Not so. Anyone who has seen extensive footage of Griffin will tell you he likes to stay in the pocket 1st and find the open WR. In fact, although he has the speed to be compared to Vick, he more closely resembles Cam Newton. He is a good decision maker with the football who only takes off when he has to. When he does, does he ever. According to many who have had the pleasure of watching him play, he's faster than Vick. He's more accurate as well coming out of college. Although Luck may be a better QB who could start now, I think RG3 may very well be the smarter choice for the long run. I say this because if you take a look at the QB position in this day and age, QBs can move in the pocket and make plays with there legs. Guys like Cam Newton, Big Ben, and Vick are revolutionizing the position. Newton is going to be scary if this season is any indication of how good he will be and this was only his rookie season. RG3 has that kind of skill set. If you want to know how difficult it is to prepare for a QB who has that kind of athleticism, watch a few Carolina games and you will get a glimpse. Again, I really love what Luck brings to the game at the next level, but if we really want to draft not only the best QB but also the best QB for the team given Manning's status, I say go with RG3. He can sit behind Manning for a couple of years where as Luck is NFL ready now and I'm inclined to believe he might not want to sit behind Manning for that long.
