Report: Keith Butler Will Stay In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH - APRIL 30: Thaddeus Gibson #90 of the Pittsburgh Steelers listens to Keith Butler the Linebackers coach during mini camp at the Pittsburgh Steelers Training Facility on April 30, 2010 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler was due to meet with Chuck Pagano on Tuesday to interview for the Colts defensive coordinator position.

But now, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Butler has decided to stay in Pittsburgh after meeting with Mike Tomlin and Steelers owner, Art Rooney II.

Butler's contract had expired, so he likely got a raise in his new deal to stay with the Steelers. He also is the front-runner to become Dick LeBeau's eventual successor. Regardless of the Colts new defensive coordinator, Pagano will be implementing his vision for the defense and the Colts likely transition to a base 3-4. The signing of Butler would have only solidified that notion.

Now Pagano will have to find another defensive mind who fits his mold for the future.

And so the search continues...

Not worried

As was mentioned the defense will be in Pagano’s vision and schemes. He was the main addition to this defense, it wasn’t Butler.

I like Teryl Austin

He is the Ravens secondary coach and has had success in the NFL and College. Plus our secondary is going to need all the coaching it can get.

radcolt you actually found a GREAT option

i kinda skimmed over it but got home from work and his resume is very impressive. not sure BAL would let him go but if we did it be quite a coup.

How about Roy Anderson?

How about Roy Anderson, defensive assistant from the Ravens?

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Coaches/Roy_Anderson.aspx – looks like he also has secondary coaching experience background. It says "2010: Assisted Chuck Pagano in coaching the secondary. "

I like that he assisted coach Pagano with the secondary big time this year when the Ravens’ secondary was one of the best in the league. He comes from the same school as Antoine Bethea, I wonder if he coached Bethea.

I think he might be the one we should go after.

by chad72 on Jan 31, 2012 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

He would be a good option also...

The fact that Austin has been a DC before (granted with the Gators, but they are probably as close to the NFL as you can get) is what intrigued me. I think it will be a 3-4 guy who Pagano has had a past experience with.

by Radcolt on Jan 31, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

i could see that

I questioned why Pagano would not put on a full strangle hold on another BAL defensive coach since they know his system and have them as DC but everyone knows its pagano.

by BigMan74 on Jan 30, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Trust me, he is. Everybody loves this guy and it’s basically set in stone that he will be our next DC when LeBeau retires.

This is bullshit!

What’s the deal with these interviewees blowing us off at the last minute. He needs to grow a pair and take on a real promotion. What does the man plan on waiting for Dick LeBeau to die? Cuz, that’s the only way I believe he’s going to give up his reins as DC. Real classy ya prick! And, to think I had high regards for him as a candidate. Shit….I’m pissed, time to watch Family Guy until my memory of this whole thing begins to fade.

You watch, LeBeau’s gonna end up like the great Joe Pa and have a position as long as he can carry on. Before Joe passed I wondered if the being the coach at Penn State was the only thing keeping him alive, turns out it was. Have fun being a lackey Butler, we’ll find someone with the marbles to lead our defense. Oh well, Pagano will find someone its not like I should be worried the our coach owned the Steelers twice this year. I take that as a sign of things to come…

Are you seriously this mad? It’s not like the guy promised he would take the job anything. In fact, I doubt he would have taken the job even if the interview went great.

Side note: as an unbiased party, would you rather be the DC of the Colts or the Steelers in a year or two? Exactly.

Time will tell...

Maybe when it comes to his turn to step up to the plate he cracks under the pressure of following a legend. The man has punked a few teams with interviews over the years, I don’t see why I should have expected anything different now. He’s got his gravy train and if he really wanted and opportunity to move up he’d take it. The man obviously can’t take the heat of the lights being on him or he’d take the job. If he’s as great as you seem to think he’d be offered a head coaching job in two to three years. Why wait to become a defensive coordinator in 5 or more years when you can fast track yourself to head coach in half the time?

Perhaps when push comes to shove he just likes living in Pittsburgh and coaching in the Steelers organization.

Personally?

I would take the Colts job. Not looking at this as a fan, but as a man who would aspire to rise in the ranks of his profession. I would look at the Colts as an opportunity to make a name for myself, potentially resulting in a head coaching job. If I take a Colts defense, that has been very bad for a long time and make it a top 10-15 defense. I feel like that would speak more about my abilities as a coach than taking over a Steelers defense that is always great. Sure, my abilities as a coach don’t actually change, but the perception of those abilities do.

Not everybody makes their decisions based solely on moving up in an organization or an industry. My father turned down promotions with his company because he had a large family and didn’t want to move us. Who knows what Butlers thought process is. Like i said above, it could be that he simply likes living in and raising his family in Pittsburgh, and enjoys working for the Steelers organization.

The great thing about the Steelers is that they never rebuild, they reload. They usually know when to replace players and they usually do a great job in finding the perfect replacements. I’m sure they will have a few bad season every now and then but for the most part I think that they will always be in the thick of things.

I’m not sure I was always behind this anyways. Its probably better to get a younger rising type DC who will be more Pagano’s right hand man and less of an independent DC like Butler has earned the right to be.

I am sorry for you guys

but I am happy we are keeping Butler. I just hope the tweet about the Steelers getting Haley are false. I would have much rather keep BA than get Haley.

I must admit at least the fans have a bit of class.

Hope it all works out for you. I just don’t see a big market for good coordinators out there and to get the run around irked me a bit. The man obviously can develop talented linebackers and with our new head coach I thought match made it Heaven. The Colts are now back to the drawing board, I only hope whomever takes the position as DC is up to the challenge.

I just hope

that Pagano doesn’t do what Dungy did and that is bring in someone (Ron Meeks) who isn’t as good a DC as the HC is.
