The Indianapolis Colts have promoted center A.Q. Shipley from the practice squad today, per Phil B. Wilson. He is now listed on the active 53-man roster once again. Shipley was waived back on September 11th to make room for Trai Essex, but he was re-signed to the practice squad. Essex was cut last week, and now Shipley is back. The move suggests the current starter at center, Samson Satele, is still not 100%. Satele sustained a knee injury against the Minnesota Vikings in week Two, and the seemed to aggravate the injury further in the Week Three loss to the Jaguars.
Shipley played his college ball at Penn State. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, which gives him a connection to Colts interim head coach Bruce Arians. Arians was the offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh from 2007-2011.
Shipley's presence on the 53-man roster likely means Mike McGlynn does not have to take practice or gameday snaps at center, and can remain at right guard. The Colts are also expecting Joe Reitz to return this week as well. Reitz hasn't played a down so far in the regular season after sustaining an injury in week One of preseason. Reitz had a knee scope two weeks ago.
To make room for Shipley, the Colts dumped linebacker Mario Addison. They also dropped D.J. Johnson from the practice squad and added Marshay Green. Johnson, you might recall, was traded for during training camp this year. He used to play for the Philadelphia Eagles.
