OK, probably too early to think about Wild Card tiebreakers. At the end of the day, just need to win games. But I'm a fan, so I spent a few brain cells thinking about this.
Right now, the Colts are a game ahead of both Pittsburgh and the Bengals for the two Wild Card spots. So far so good. The next closest are the Dolphins, but they are two games away, and we win the tiebreaker against them thru head-to-head, so in effect, we are three games ahead of the Dolphins, so let's assume those guys are not competitors with us for a spot.
But let's face it, the two games against the Texans look pretty tough. And the away game at Detroit looks tough too. But the Steelers and Bengals both still have to play Baltimore, Dallas AND EACH OTHER once. So let's say we end up losing those 2-3 the rest of the way and the Steelers and Bengals each go 3-2, so we all end up in a three-way tie at 9-7. What then?
The next tiebreaker is conference record. Here are the conference records right now:
Colts 5-3
Steelers 3-5
Bengals 4-5
This is HUGE! Let's say we lose Detroit and x2 Texas. We end up 5-5 in conference. Since the Steelers and Bengals play head-to-head, one of them will have 6 conference losses...we will AUTOMATICALLY WIN THE TIEBREAKER AGAINST ONE OF THEM!
Now, like I said, the best medicine to having to even worry about this tiebreaker stuff is to just win, particularly the ones where we'll be favored. If we beat Detroit next week, that will increase our playoff probability by a large margin. Nevertheless, even if we don't, I really like our chances because the schedules and tiebreakers really line up in our favor.
Sincerely,
1st year Colts fan.
