Colts Mock Draft

I am conducting the draft under a couple assumptions:

  1. The Colts will release Peyton Manning. I personally feel like Manning will play in 2012 for someone, but it won't be for the Colts. His rehab, although progressing, doesn't appear it will have him healthy enough by the time his $28 million roster bonus comes due, and the Colts cannot afford to lock up a question mark with that kind of money.
  2. Reggie Wayne and Jeff Saturday aren't going to be re-signed. Both are Free Agents, both have played their entire careers with #18 calling the shots, and both are left on the outside looking in when the Colts bid Manning farewell. Saturday will retire and Wayne will get paid to play somewhere else.

Star-divide

Here's my first run at the 2012 Draft for the Colts, with projected compensatory picks:
  1. Andrew Luck - QB, Stanford 6'4", 230 lbs.
  2. Mark Barron - SS, Alabama 6'2", 215 lbs.
  3. Michael Brewster - C, OSU 6'4", 315 lbs.
  4. Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT Baylor 6'2", 335 lbs.
    1. Compensatory pick for Clint Session: DeQuan Menzie, CB Alabama 5'11", 195 lbs.
  5. Ryan Broyles, WR/PR OU 5'11", 195 lbs.
  6. Tank Carder, ILB TCU 6'2", 237 lbs.
    1. Compensatory pick for Charlie Johnson: Ryan Van Bergen, DE Michigan 6'6", 285lbs.
  7. Nick Provo, TE Syracuse 6'3", 249 lbs.

And an explanation for the selections:

  1. Andrew Luck - no explanation needed. RG3 had a great college career, and he could have an equally great pro career, but Andrew Luck has got everything you are looking for in a franchise quarterback. The Colts want to leave as little to chance as possible while entering this rebuilding mode, and Luck is as can't-miss as it gets.
  2. Mark Barron - After QB, I believe Safety is the biggest need for the Colts. A good safety in the NFL affects all aspects of the defense. Barron has the size, strength and instincts to become an elite safety in the NFL. He's a good ball-hawk from the safety position, tallying 12 INTs in more or less 3 seasons at Alabama (he played sparingly to say the least as a freshman in 2008). With Antoine Bethea, Barron makes the Colts defensive secondary immediately a higher caliber unit. At 6'2", 215, he lays some wood when he hits, and he strikes me as a Sean Taylor-type safety.
  3. Michael Brewster - I was really split here between Brewster and Ben Jones out of Georgia, but I went with Brewster because he's a much better pass blocker, and according to Walter Football his skill set projects as a good run blocker in a zone-scheme. Although he's a bit bigger than Saturday, but it'd be an understatement to say he has some big shoes to fill. Still, he's the 2nd rated Center on the board, and the Colts need to infuse some young talent in their offensive line to protect their new franchise QB.
  4. Nicolas Jean-Baptiste - The Colts need a big, run-stuffing body to anchor their defensive line going forward, and I think they'll find their man in the 2012 draft. We could opt to select Poe or Ta'amu earlier, but I think this is a relatively deep draft for NTs this year. NJB is an extremely powerful NT who - when he's playing well - will require double teams, and is hard to move off the ball. His technique still has a way to go, but he has the size and the talent to excel at the NFL level.
    1. Comp. Pick - DeQuan Menzie - It's no secret that our CB play was terrible last year. A lot of people have Minnefield, Dennard or Gilmore slotted in for us in Round 2, but I thin if Barron is available we have to take him. Largely overshadowed by the other beasts in the secondary at Bama (Dre Kirkpatrick, Mark Barron), Menzie is my sleeper pick in this draft. He's a physical DB who likes to play press coverage. He played safety early in his career at Alabama, and also has the quickness to line up opposite the slot, making him an extremely versatile defensive component. I like this guy.
  5. Ryan Broyles - With Reggie Wayne leaving, the Colts need to find a solid WR in the draft to help fill the void. I know Broyles tore his ACL this past season, but before that he was putting together a compaign that projected him as has as a 2nd Round pick. He's a great route-runner with excellent hands, and he's extremely quick. Projects as a slot receiver, but I think he's fast enough to stretch the field - which is something we know new OC Bruce Arians loves to do with burners like Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown. I think Broyles fits the profile of a Bruce Arians WR perfectly.
  6. Tank Carder - With the apparent transition to a 3-4 hybrid defense, the Colts need to get bigger at the ILB position. Admittedly, the name Tank alone kinda made this guy standout to me. Has great speed for a LB, and does well in both run support and in coverage, and even had a 69-yd pick six this past year (1 of 2 INTs returned for a TD by him). Has been named the Mountain West DPOY for the past two seasons.
    1. Com. Pick - Ryan Van Bergen - Again, this pick is for the purpose of shoring up the defensive personnel for the switch to a 3-4 hybrid. Van Bergen has got the size and frame for a big, 3-4 DE. He's notched 5 sacks each of the last two seasons, but he's more of a Jamaal Anderson type DE who'll get a sack here and there, but is mainly served to be a big body on the DLine to slow the running attack.
  7. Nick Provo - Dallas Clark is coming off the worst season in his professional career, and could very well be a cap casualty this season. He's due $8.8 million in 2013, so there's a chance he won't be on the roster for too much longer. Tamme's good, but he's not great. From the TE position last year, Provo grabbed 51 receptions for 537 yards and 7 TDs. For a College TE, those are exceptional numbers. His scouting reports project him as a good route-running TE with above average hands, and certainly worth a 7th round flyer.

I'll probably do another Mock or two before draft day, but let me know what you think.

great job. nicely done.

i love broyles too, i think he is a steal. I think we will have to grab him in 4th. I feel like the patriots might even step up and take him late 3rd which would suck…..i am debating whether we need DT or SS in 2nd round. would love to grab barron.

by coltsgolfbeer on Feb 13, 2012 5:00 PM EST reply actions

A good safety isn't how you build a good D

CB and SS make the highlight films, but, all good defenses start with solid D-lineman that can disrupt run and pass plays. Bob Sanders made plays because Freeney/Mathis/Brock/McFarland were on the line holding blockers allowing Sanders to roam free. You can get a great SS late in the draft, but it’s much harder to get a great lineman late.

IMO, I would opt for a DT in the 2nd round (if the DT players available match the value of that pick) and get a safety later.

Also

Do you know for sure that we are getting a 4th and 6th round compensatory pick? Didn’t know this was decided by NFL yet. IF so, cool that we get 9 picks this year. Hope the new GM knows what he is doing. He’ll have a chance to do his thing.

by ItsALLgood on Feb 13, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think that it's pretty assumed that we'll get them, but I'm not so sure.

Since we also added Sims, Anderson, and Brayton. But the salaries in Johnson and Session’s contracts were pretty high, so I have no idea.

Brewster sucks, is slow off the snap. Anyway, not worth a 3rd rounder. Broyles is another one I don’t like, especially after the ACL. Colts need either a big guy with ok speed, or a ok sized guy with great speed. He is neither. The rest of the mock is good.

by Ty46 on Feb 13, 2012 5:00 PM EST reply actions

I disagree. I really like Broyles and I think he’ll have a solid NFL career. He may never be an All-Star, but that’s what you’re looking for in the middle rounds. The most important aspect of an NFL receiver is his head, as Marvin showed because as good as he was physically his intelligence is what made him great. Broyles has that. He runs good routes and has great hands. I think he’s a great pair with a young quarterback.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 13, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Brewster was a definite need-based pick.

As for Broyles, I think if he can be had in the 5th round, it’s an extremely low-risk, high-reward pick. His quickness and hands are at or near the top in this year’s WR class. I looked for a WR that reminded me of the kind Arians has used in his Pitt offense: guys like Wallace, Brown and Randel-el. Extremely fast, quick and versatile athletes. I think the Colts will target a WR with that type of skill set in this draft.

I would actually be very happy with this draft.

I especially like the Carder pick. Maybe playing Hughes with his college buddy will light a fire.

I go back and forth on Barron. Some days I think he’d be a good pick, on others I’m not so sure. He does have experience and hits hard, but he struggles in man-to-man coverage and might not be fast enough to keep up with NFL receivers who go over the top.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 13, 2012 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Im no expert, but not bad at all.

Seems like several teams could use a solid safety. I wonder if he’d make in the second.

I was just listening to Sirius xm NFL radio (Moving the Chains) and they didn’t believe we’d have Mathis or Freeney, moala and Nevis would be very mediocre DEs, and LBs would be a liability in the new scheme.

So seems like we HAVE to do something in free agency. Who do you all think we should target?

by mlc2656 on Feb 13, 2012 5:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

That’s too pessimistic. We’re not switching wholesale to a 3-4 and are still going to run the 4-3 at times as well. Nevis is a good player and the claim he’d only be mediocre shouldn’t be given weight until we see him play. Freeney will probably renegotiate his contract so Mathis can resign. Anderson will probably also be resigned to play DE in the 3-4 and the 4-3. The linebacking corps is pretty good, especially since one linebacker in the Baltimore version of the 3-4/4-3 is a pure pass rusher. Angerer has got great skills and will probably become a great linebacker. I think he’ll fit into the 3-4/4-3 hybrid and could become a Lewis-esque type player.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 13, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

still, it seems we'll have to sign a few FAs.

Which players available would be sensible pick-ups?

by mlc2656 on Feb 13, 2012 6:09 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That I’m not too sure about yet because it will depend on how renegotiations go and who gets franchise tagged. The defense won’t turn around this year and it will take a couple drafts to get the personnel in place because FA is largely overrated as a building means.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 13, 2012 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not bad

Brewster is my biggest question mark in this mock. I know we need a replacement for Saturday, but don’t know if Brewster is the answer. Other than that, really good mock. Tank is a badass name for a linebacker.

Luck won't be the only player that decides the fate of our franchise!

Each year I hope the Warriors, Colts, Cavs, and the Magic get better yet the opposite happens.

HE WILL BE

by far, the most important one.

by javen on Feb 13, 2012 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

WR core would be very iffy

Garcon 6’0 is a hit or miss type of guy. Collie very generous 6’0 always hurt and more of a slot guy then a #2. Broyles 5’10" torn his ACL so who know if he will be 100% but i do really like him as a slot. If Wayne doesnt come back we need a possession WR like Sanu, McNutt, Streeter, Hill, or even Nick Toon. Maybe being Al Toon’s son might be a good thing.

by Cwhite916 on Feb 13, 2012 8:23 PM EST reply actions

The colts really haven't had big receivers in the past

Marvin, Reggie, Gonzo, collie, garcon, stokley: all about 5’11" – 6’. I think a big possession wr like tommy streeter would be nice (and could be had in the later rounds), but it’s not a must-have imo.

by TheWeasley on Feb 13, 2012 9:22 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I know but

Wayne Gonzo and Marvin were all first round talent. I really think Manning made Collie and Garcon. And IMO Reggie has been a possession WR with the comeback routes and slants. I think we need a WR that can grow with Luck. And saying Luck hits McNutt is kinda funny

by Cwhite916 on Feb 13, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

Remember, before he tore his ACL, Broyles WAS a first round player. Getting him in the fourth or fifth could end up being a huge steal if he recovers fully from his ACL tear

garcon

had a decent year without manning this year

by omahacolt on Feb 14, 2012 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

This.

Garcon isn’t big, but he is a deep threat. And if he has a decent quarterback it will be interesting to see what he can do.

by James Broschat on Feb 14, 2012 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't say it would be bad

i said iffy. Garcon gets a droppys, Collie gets another concusion. now your down to a guy less than a year ago torn his ACL (broyles) and white. All i am saying is that we need a big durable guy that is consistent. Garcon does show promise but all colts fans wanted to hang him last year. you remember all the drops. We need another Wayne.

by Cwhite916 on Feb 15, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think that with Luck at QB presumably for the at least the next decade

We’ll have ample time to find him that perfect, possession receiver. I wanted to focus more on balanced team needs with this mock. Broyles tipped the scales for me because he’d be a bargain in the 5th, but more importantly, he’d also be a return man – something the Colts haven’t really had in years.

Just not sure about the Brewster and Broyles pick. With the Colts injury history with receivers lately, I’m not sure selecting a guy coming off an ACL injury is the best option.

An ACL is a freak injury though and not the kind of nagging injury which keeps coming up. If Broyles looks like he can run and cut at his pro day, then it’s worth the risk, especially in the middle rounds.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 13, 2012 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Although Edge’s ACL lead him to be injury prone for a couple years due to the inability to train in the offseason like he wanted to…

by cq.noble on Feb 14, 2012 1:47 AM EST up reply actions

I feel like Center is a big need - maybe the 3rd was too high for Brewster

But I doubt we have a chance at getting Peter Konz out of Wisconsin – he’s projected to be a mid-1st rounder, and is probably the best center to come out in at least the last 5 years.

I’ll post another mock with some trade scenarios, because I can definitely see the Colts jumping back into the 1st or 2nd with all the picks they have this year.
Note: none of my trade scenarios will feature the Colts trading the #1 overall pick. Even if Manning comes back, Irsay will draft Luck.

Great mock (A+)

I really liked the NJB pick, he was one of the players I wanted to select when I did a mock draft.

Broyles would be a steal whoever gets him, if he can bounce back from his injury, I can see him making alot of noise in the NFL.

I also had Barron and Brewster selected in one of my mocks.

Thanks

I think if the positions addressed in the Colts draft somewhat mirror what I’ve drawn up here, I’d be very pleased.

NJB, I think, will be a great NT in the NFL, and he could very well be available in the 4th. I like Josh Chapman out of Alabama as well, and I could see us going after Chapman in the 3rd and maybe Brewster falls to the 4th. Then again, maybe the Colts don’t go after a Center at all in this year’s draft, considering how thin a class this is for that position.

I really believe too that Broyles will bounce back from the ACL. His surgery was performed by the best in the business, Dr. James Andrews, and from what I’ve read his rehab is going extremely well. There’s a slim, outside chance that he’ll participate even in the combine at the end of the month, but I wouldn’t count on that. He’ll definitely be fit enough to do some pre-draft workouts though closer to April.

Easily...

the best Colts mock I have seen so far. Every pick is reasonable in terms of where the players are expected to be drafted and each pick upgrades their position. I love the idea of getting Broyles and Carder late as well as getting Barron in the 2nd. Well done, sir. (A+)

Round 2...

Don’t think Barron will be there, but even if he is, I don’t like this pick. I am all for ditching both Tamme and Clark and taking Fleener to be Luck’s go to guy. If you haven’t seen the way these two have played together in the past, you should definitely check it out. It is worth getting excited over. I like the Carder pick, but that is about all.
