Free Agency Fallout from Manning's Release
It seems to me that releasing Manning and picking up Luck (with relatively modest rookie pay) will give us some cap space to be a little active in free agency. I don't profess to understand the amount of dead money for Manning's contract that would go against the 2012 salary cap. If someone wants to enlighten me on that subject, I'd like to hear it. But, it seems like we can now afford to be a little active in the FA market, in addition to resigning Garcon, Tamme, and Mathis. The guys I'd go after would be:
1) Sione Pouha, NT, NYJ. It's no secret that we need a 3-4 NT, and here's a good player nearing the end of his useful life. He's experienced at the position, and his addition would allow us to select one of the developmental NTs that should be selected in the 4th or 5th round. I'm not too high on the NT class this year, but someone like Akiem Hicks of Regina would be a good back-up who could develop into a great starter in a year or two.
2) Ben Grubbs, OG, Baltimore. This would be a huge upgrade over Pollack or Tepper at RG. He'll command a big salary, but not as big as Carl Nicks of the Saints.
3) Jason Allen, CB, Houston. Maybe our biggest need is at CB. Allen played really well last year, but his 29 years of age will prevent him from being too expensive to sign.
4) John Carlson, TE, Seattle. He was out all 2011 with a shoulder injury, but he's a complete TE when healthy. He could be a really nice target for Luck, and I'm not sure how quickly we can get around to drafting a TE in 2012...

Actually, I think this year's class of nose tackles is pretty good
Poe, ta’amu, Chapman, baptiste just of the top of my head all will be available in themiddle rounds. I bet the colts grab one of them.
As far as fa tight ends, Carlson is a guy I can see for sure.

Baptiste
I do really like Baptiste, and we could get him in the 3rd (maybe the 4th if we’re lucky). But I’m really not a fan of Ta’amu. Poe’s around 350 lbs, isn’t he? The problem I have with him is that he’d have no role whatsoever in our 4-3 look, which I think we’ll use as often as we do the 3-4 – just a guess, of course. If we take one of these 320 lb. guys, like Hicks or Dominique Hamilton out of Missouri, they would better fit both schemes. IMO, we have more productive positions to draft in the 2nd than a part-time NT…like a target for Luck, an OL, or a safety.
My thoughts
1. No, he will not be part of our long-term defensive plans but a younger option than yes.
2. Not sure if Grubbs make our current blocking scheme with being young and a pro-bowl alternate he’s got talent.
3. I wouldn’t mind as he will not be expensive and Powers is injury prone and he could teach our CBs something.
4. I think we should try and get Tamme to stay but if Carlson comes here I wouldn’t mind
Each year I hope the Warriors, Colts, Cavs, and the Magic get better yet the opposite happens.
