Who Said Defense Doesn't Win Championship? Think Again

Before the Giants beat the Niners, the Packers, and before the Niners beat the Saints, while the so called "analysts" took what were deemed the "sexy picks," I took the teams with stout defenses in both of those contests. Much like the sports personalities of networks like ESPN, fans love offense and trend towards the teams that have a lot of it. I'm still old school because the old adage that "Defense wins championships" still rings true. We saw it again in this year's SB. I am a firm believer in building a team by starting at the most crucial point of attack: "The line of scrimmage." The Giants won this year's SB by being strong in two areas: QB and D-line. Their philosophy of being able to pressure the QB without the use of blitzing showed the world how you take down an offensive juggernaut like the Pats. We saw this same approach with the Niners when they beat the Saints. We saw it again when the Giants took it to their 1st opponent in beating the team everyone picked to win it all again in Green Bay. We've seen this in so many other games that it often baffles me when people act "shocked" when the "favored" picks fall to teams that are more known for their defensive grit than they are for the flashy offensive fireworks of their opponents.

Buffalo, Denver, St Louis, The Niners, and Chargers and even the Indianapolis for that matter have all fielded some of the game's most explosive offenses. Mind you the teams that won the big one only did so after an upgrade on the defensive side of the ball. This year should not only serve as a reminder that in spite of record breaking QBs like Brees and Rodgers, the game is still decided by defense. As a Colts fan I glad to see that point reemphasized by the organization as they begin a "new era." No matter how many points you score, if you can't stop anyone, chances are you won't win the games that really matter. We have all seen enough of this truth in watching a "bend but don't break" defense for the last decade in Indy. With Pagano and company here I am looking forward to those days being over.

so you're saying

NE had superior defense then Ravens in AFCCC? more complete teams wins SB. always. Sometime the defense is a little better, and other times the offense, but both has to be at least good. there are anamolies of course, like the Colts in 2006, or the Raven in 2000(?) in which colts had sub-par defense, and ravens had subpar offense…

Wait! Who won the SB?

Oh that’s right, the Giants did. You don’t get a ring for “making it to the SB.” You get one for winning it. I don’t care even if the Pats did win against the Ravens, the Ravens were still clearly the better team. The were a dropped TD pass away from beating the Pats and if Brady didn’t get the preferential treatment from the officials that he always does the Pats wouldn’t even be in the game.

No one has said, "Defense doesn't win Championships"...

it is pretty much one of the most used cliches in sports…“Offense sells tickets…Defense wins Championships”…and rightfully so.

balanced teams

generally win championships…duh

by BLOODontheTRACKS on Feb 7, 2012 6:02 PM EST reply actions

the team that....

scores the most points wins a game. So it really goes both ways. You can have a great defense, but you also have to score the most points to win the game.

Pretty sure everyone says defense wins championships.

Also pretty sure you said you’d never post again on stampede blue (at least under this sock puppet account). Either way, you’re a joke. You are, of course, entitled to your own opinions, as dumb as they are. You actually share many of the same dbaggish qualities of our friend Omaha. well, at least Omaha knows what he’s talking about some of the time.

Pretty sure I don't give

shit what you think and as far as sock pocket accounts go you sound an awfully lot like some dick head named “Tony Stroot.” BTW If I want to post another article that’s my prerogative. For someone who doesn’t want to see posts by me you have a very hard time making yourself stop reading them. I don’t read articles from people on here I don’t care for. Why? Because I’m not interested… Your jealousy is blatantly obvious. The fact that you can’t contribute anything of interest to anyone on this site is why you throw out insults to people you don’t even know. I know what people like you are really about though. It must be hard going through life knowing that the only thing you’ve ever done right is evacuate your mother’s uterus.

The fact

that you went to lengths to find out strooster’s real name is kinda creepy.

Yep, i'm totally jealous of you.

Jealous of your “quotation marks”

Jealous of your exceptional grammar

jealous of your revolutionary football takes like the genius that is “defense wins championships.” I honestly can’t believe that I, or anybody else, had never come up with that before. Are you feeling how jealous I am?

who is Tony strout? A jealous ex?

Tony Stroot

used to comment on here, and argue with Deywalka. Apparently, Deywalka is stalking him. Creepy.

I’m not at all surprised to find i’m not the only one who thinks deywalkas posts are a joke. Why in the world would you care enough to actually track down somebody’s real name? That’s pathetic deywalka. Stick to bad takes bro, they are more your style.

Stalking another dude is all kinds of wrong.

I "love"

your use of quotation marks.

Hot teams

and good teams win championships. The last team that won the Super Bowl that was only good on defense was who, The Bucs in 02?

by James Broschat on Feb 7, 2012 9:19 PM EST reply actions

What about the giants in 07?

Their offense was merely average, but they had the most beastly pass rush in the game.

by TheWeasley on Feb 7, 2012 9:58 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I think the fact that they held the insane combo of Brady and moss and that offense that broke all kinds of records, steamrolling into the superbowl worth and 18-0 record, to only 14 points is remarkable.

With*. Autocorrect fail.

by TheWeasley on Feb 7, 2012 10:02 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

It was remarkable.

But it wasn’t because they had a great defense. They were pretty average on both offense and defense throughout the year, with a very good run game. They got hot in the playoffs. It happens. They played a great game in the Super Bowl, but it wasn’t like they were just a defensive beast.

by James Broschat on Feb 8, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

They got "hot" because they

got healthy. Injuries is what plagued the Giants early in the season. When they got key components back on defense they wrecked havoc. Defense wins baby. Always has and always will.

by deywalka on Feb 9, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, that's why the Patriots beat the Ravens,

The Patriots beat the Broncos, the Giants beat the 49ers, the Packers won the Super Bowl last year, the Saints won it the year before, the Colts beat the Jets and Ravens en route to the Super Bowl, etc.

Good teams win.

To quote Lou Holtz (Who can actually make some sense as long as Notre Dame isnt involved)

“You dont have to be the best team in the country, but you BETTER be the best team in the stadium”. Same applies for defense.

Balance wins championships or in other words, lack of balance gets exposed

Once the playoffs start, you cannot win with a terrible D (Packers, Saints) or a terrible O (Niners) for long. I just looked at the offensive numbers and defensive numbers post season, this is what I came up with:

Postseason defense sorted by lowest PPG

Postseason offense sorted by highest PPG

Yes, I agree with the posters who said the postseason becomes a different season and the Colts of 2006, the Giants of 2007 and 2011 proved that (Giants did not give up more than 20 pts in their entire playoff run in both runs to win the SBs).

Defensively – Giants were No.1 in pts per game allowed, Patriots were No.3 in pts per game allowed

Offensively – Giants were No.5 in pts per game scored, Patriots were No.2 in pts per game scored

So, it definitely is not offense that won it for the Giants or Pats exclusively. Regardless of their regular season standings, both Ds stepped up in the playoffs and the ones that did not ended up going home. Yes, it does take balance on O and D. Giants won despite not scoring many pts in the NFCCG and SB because they won the time of possession battle – No.1 in that category throughout the playoffs (they had 11, 11 and 13 (2 in OT) offensive possessions in their NFC games leading to the SB if I remember right). Teams could not play keep away from Eli vs the Giants D and once the Giants D gave the ball to Eli, he controlled clock really well.

I will have to look at drive charts by postseason teams to see how many possessions were generated for the offense by the D and ST with turnovers and punts, it is not hard to fathom Giants are tops in that category too.

How can you say defense wins championships

When in the NFC and AFC championship, the team with the worse defense and better offense lost both times. Defense doesnt win championships, balance does

Here Is His REAL POINT: The Colts Need A Philosophy More Like The Giants, Steelers, Patriots Etc.

Yes, the Patriots have lost the last 2 Super Bowls, but at least they got there. They’ve gotten to 5, as a matter of fact, plus the Steelers and Giants have 5 appearances between them with QBs nowhere near as consistently good as Peyton Manning (or Tom Brady). The fellow should have been more focused in his articulation, but his point is good: the Colts have been unbalanced in their personnel philosophy, favoring offense over defense and edge players over linemen. They also veered too far in favoring speed over bulk and toughness. Look at the size of the Patriots and Giants DLs and LBs versus those of the Colts. And that is defense. On offense, could you imagine the Giants or Patriots starting a pair of 2nd year undrafted free agents and a rookie on the offensive line?

The Colts invested far too much in the bad strategy of building for speed on defense because they are a dome team (the same philosophy that had the Oilers, Lions and Falcons adopt the run-and-shoot and the Vikings with a similar offensive philosophy under Denny Green) and relying on a cerebral, finesse offense led by great skill players because Peyton Manning liked the scheme. They got comfortable with thinking that Manning would either give them a lead or force foes into a shootout, causing their pass rushers and defensive backs could force sacks and turnovers. That works great against bad and average teams – see the great regular season record – but not in the playoffs (see the 9-10 record).

so it had nothing to do with

the fact that the Pats intentionally gave up a TD at the end of the game to lose the lead and mistakenly thought they could come back
