I like the moves Grigs has made so far. After last year we all saw that the colts were starting bad players at a lot of positions - QB, RG, RT, SS, CB, DT/NT. I was hoping the goal this offseason, with or without manning, would be to get to a baseline of at least an average NFL starter at each position. I think we're well on track due to the moves Grigson is making.
Look at the camp battle that is shaping up on the Oline. The difference this year is everyone fighting for a job has started somewhere before, instead of having a few undrafted free agents or guys who have never been signed elsewhere (Tepper, Toudouze, etc) competing for jobs. LT is set with Costanzo, and Center is prob set with Satele. The rest is up in the air, which isn't a bad thing IMO. RT is the key spot. 3 guys can compete for that spot - Justice, Linkenbach, Ijalana. If Ijalana wins, then the guard spots are set with Reitz and McGlynn. If Justice wins, then the guard spots go to the best 2 of Ijalana, McGlynn and Reitz. I still think we should draft another guard in the later rounds to compete with McGlynn/Reitz, but overall I like this line better than last years already.
We also finally have an average caliber SS, which is a HUGE upgrade over Caldwell. that guy just plain sucked, had to be the worst safety in the league.
That leaves us now with QB, WR, TE, CB, and NT to find ave starters. I hope we sign one more player in FA, and that being a NT like Franklin or Garay. The rest we can get in the draft this year. Then we're set with a solid base to build from.
The goal next year should be to get everyone on board with the new offense/defense, and give Luck some good experience - and that's it. With ave starters at all positions, we can prove out the schemes and will hopefully see an improved defense at least. The offense will struggle, but that's a good thing cause we need another top 10 draft pick next year to finish the rebuild. With that top 10 pick, we can upgrade one position with a pro bowl talent, and then sign 2-3 more pro bowlers with our $40M+ of cap room. Good thing for us is the FA class of CB's next year is very good, so we can get our shutdown corner then.
I really think as long as Luck progresses next year as expected, we'll be back in the playoffs in 2013!!! (assuming we don't f#ck up the draft this year and next!!). What do you guys think??
