Jim Irsay has made quite a stir from his tweeting yesterday regarding "Trade winds blowing" and has the city a buzz over who the Colts could be looking at. But that wouldn't be Irsay if there was no "twitter buzz" going on now would it? At any rate while critics and fans alike speculate over who the potential "well know veteran" could be from MJD to Mike Wallace, the truth is there's only one player who the front office is looking at and it's not anyone on offense. It's Vontae Davis. For those of you who don't know much about Davis, he's currently the second best CB in the league. Yes, second only to Darelle Revis. I'm telling you right now, if this trade Irsay tweeted about goes down, the Colts defense will be ranked in the top 15 or better. That being said I stand by my prediction that if the Colts field a top 15 defense or better, they will be going to the SB.
I'm a HUGE fan of Vontae Davis. Like Revis, he is the kind of CB that you can build your entire defense around. You can leave him on an island with the Calvin Johnsons and the Andre Johnsons of the league and he will very capably hold his own against them. He has both the speed to run with all of the fleet footed WRs as well as the strength to give them problems getting off the line of scrimmage. What has me the most excited though is when I look at the top defenses in the league today, with the exception of the Jets, non of them possess the type of shut down corner that Davis is. When you can blitz the way the Ravens and now our Colts can with the system we now have in place, the sky is the limit for a secondary with that kind of play at the CB position. Acquiring Vontae would give us three top notch DBs in the secondary including Bethea and Powers. Josh Gordy will make a nice slot corner. I'll keep checking Irsay's twitter and see if anything develops. The latest tweet he sent was last night: "It's standing still...at 1am...shut it down...as Paul Simon says..'There's only so much you can do..go on and get some rest..."
Now we play the waiting game...
