Hey Colts fans,
I have a new Colts blog up and running that I started a few days ago. If anyones interested, check it out, heres the link and one of my pieces.
Last season the secondary was pretty awful. Bob Sanders was long gone, getting hurt somewhere else, Kelvin Hayden had left, also due to injury, and Jerraud Powers battled different ailments every week. The only stalwart left from the glory days was Antoine Bethea, the most consistent player on the entire defense last season. Bethea plugged up holes left by other players in the secondary, totalling 139 tackles and two forced fumbles, while gaining status as a hard hitting animal to be reckoned with. This year Colts fans can only hope that three or four guys can join Bethea and make the secondary respectable again, the way it was during the Harper-Sanders-Bethea-Hayden days.
The secondary has gotten loads better since last season, thats the good news. Indy has solidified their two starting corner roles after trading for Vontae Davis this week, a strong acquisition who will immensely help a unit that never really had a number 2 guy last season. Jerraud Powers will return to his starting role after watching most of last year from the bench. The Davis trade gives the Colts two surefire guys, granted that Powers can stay healthy. Behind those two are a lot of unproven players who will look to make a name for themselves such as Josh Gordy and Justin King, both acquired in trades this offseason.
At free safety Bethea will likely produce another pro bowl caliber season, while a few young backups will get sparse time on the field. On the other side, Tom Zbikowski followed coach Pagano from Baltimore, and will be expected to fill the void at strong safety. Joe Lefeged will likely be brought back and play around 20 snaps a game behind, Lefeged showed incredible athleticism last season, and Colts fans are hoping he will have improved. Mike Newton, Jermale Hines, and Latarrius Thomas are all hoping to grab one of the remaining roster spots, I would expect Hines to get the nod there.
On paper, Indy's secondary looks pretty weak, but Colts fans know that the secondary has a lot of talent this season. While it won't rival the best in the league, the secondary could turn into a top 15 unit. I love the Davis trade, I think he will become a strong player immediately, if Powers stays healthy he can become one of the best corners in the league and Zbikowski has a great shot to prove himself as a defender instead of a special teams guy. And Bethea...they don't come more ready to play than him.
