After Game Thoughts, The Silver Lining, and The Questionable Play Calling

Yeah, after the 1st 5 minutes, yesterday was painful to watch Colts fans. The blogusphere is buzzing with all sorts of scenarios as to why the team lost with most of the fingers pointing at the defense. Then there's Andrew Luck and his 3 INT's. I have my own thoughts on the game and will start with by defending the defense as well as question some of the play calling. I (As well as many of you Colts fans out there) I'm sure were jumping out of your seats when Mathis sacked Cutler on the 1st play of the game on the way to sending the Bears to a quick 3 and out. I'm sure you were even more excited with the pick six by Jerrell Freeman. Then just as quickly as the Colts defense got hot, they started to fizzle for most of the rest of the game. The injury to Freeney didn't help much either.

* The defense Star beat writer Phil Wilson took a shot at Vontae Davis on the TDs passes he was "victimized" from http://www.indystar.com/article/20120909/SPORTS03/209090390/Colts-defense-gives-up-too-much-Bears?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Indianapolis%20Sports in an article he wrote last night. I think this is unfair due to the fact that Cutler had all day to throw on both of those plays. If you give any QB in the league that much time to throw he is going to "victimize" any CB including Darrelle Revis. I think this is an unfair shot at the new Colts DB as well as the criticism the rest of the defense is getting. The truth is they were put in un-ideal situations all day to the tune of 5 turnovers. You aren't gonna win many games with that stat line, I don't care who you play. The defense started off hot and gave the Colts offense a chance to go up 14-0 with the initial 3 and out they forced the Bears into as well and the pic 6. If Luck and company had scored on their 1st possession the Colts are up 14 with the pic six that came on the next possession. When you are up by 2 TDs as a defense you can be more exotic with your schemes while on the flip side your opponent has to be more cautious with their play-calling out of desperation to get back into the game. The defense did there job as well as could be expected under the circumstances. They just didn't get much help from the offense.

*The offense Andrew Luck looked much like a rookie at times. He also looked like a seasoned vet at times by staying cool in the pocket while being surrounded by Bears defenders reaching and clawing at his jersey. Unfortunately, other than Reggie Wayne his teammates didn't help him out very much yesterday in crucial situations. Donald Brown's drops were drive killers. So were Donnie Avery's. Also the absence of T.Y. Hilton didn't help either. One of the things I was really surprised to see was the lack of use of both of our stud TEs. Fleener didn't catch a pass until the last two minutes of the 3rd Qtr. Allen wasn't used at all in the passing game. I don't understand why they weren't, given the fact that Urlacher can't cover either one of them. When Luck did go to Fleener, he delivered. I expect to see him used more as well as Allen in the passing game.

*Kris Adams Kris Adams is a baller. I like him more than Avery even if his route running leaves a little to be desired. He catches everything and he has size and speed. Donnie Avery to me is just a deep threat. He is extremely small and can't hang on to balls after taking a hit. I hope to see more of Adams and less of Avery as the season goes on.

* Special teams The special teams unit was very impressive. We had excellent field position for most of the game while pinning the Bears inside the 20 most of their drives. We didn't give up a lot in the return game against ST terror Devon Hester and kept him in check most of the day. All in all, other than the fumble by rookie WR Lavon Brazill and the missed FG by Adam Vinatieri I was really impressed with the play of the Special Teams.

All in all, this was a game I would rather see the Colts lose vs the ones down the road. We need to beat the Vikings this weekend and get a streak going. I believe as the O line improves and the TEs get more involved in the passing game, Luck will blossom and the offense will fly. When we get key personal back on defense I believe it will improve as well. This team is not as bad as the score board showed.
