While playing for the Indianapolis Colts, from 1998 to 2010 Peyton Manning had an incredible 4,782 completions to Colts receivers. Of those, 965 were completions to Colts player number 88, Marvin Harrison, from 1998 to 2008. 787 completions were to Player number 87, Reggie Wayne from 2001 to 2010. 45 were to Player number 87, Torrance Small in 1998. Therefore approximately 38 % of all of his Colts completions were to players with the numbers 87 or 88.
As a Denver Bronco, Peyton Manning has completed 450 passes in 2012 and 2013 (as of this writing). Of those 450 completions, 114 were to player number 87, Eric Decker, and 34 receptions were made by Player number 88, Demaryius Thomas. That means that approximately 33% of all receptions for the last two years have gone to players wearing numbers 87 or 88.
Given these unavoidable numbers it seems that the best strategy is to have players numbered 87 or 88 on the field with Peyton Manning. I propose that Reggie Wayne donate his number to Vontae Davis for one game and Greg Toler locate and use the currently idle number 88 for one game. This strategy is likely to generate a 33% to 38% chance that Vontae or Greg will make receptions/interceptions from the gloved hand of the confused and conflicted Peyton Manning.
