The Colts announced Friday morning that they have re-signed safety Larry Asante. Asante was on the roster during preseason, and stood out with some impressive play. His pick-six against Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer during the fourth quarter of the Colts' third preseason game was especially noteworthy.
Yes, this is the same Brian Hoyer who recently led Cleveland to two straight wins following the Trent Richardson trade to the Colts. Also the same Brian Hoyer who injured his knee in the Browns' Thursday Night Football win over the Bills.
Back to Asante, he replaces recently-waived safety Joe Lefeged, who was injured all of preseason and has done little-to-nothing to distinguish himself in 2013. In 2012, he was the team's special teams captain, but he was also arrested during the offseason for fleeing the scene and carrying an unlicensed firearm.
It's unlikely that Lefeged was cut because of the offseason arrest. LaVon Brazill's transgressions have been much more serious, and he is coming off a four-game suspension. Instead, a more likely reason Lefeged was shown the door is because he just isn't that good playing in this defense. Rookie safety Delano Howell had already supplanted him on the depth chart.
Of course, in late-August, yours truly made the point that Asante and Howell should earn spots on the 53-man roster and Lefeged should get cut. I was only off by roughly one month.
Feel free to love me.
