Far too often on this site, from both the writers and the members, I have seen the blame put on the coaches. Far too often, I see, "they didn't prepare them well enough" or "Pep needs to be fired" or something of the sort. And while I am absolutely not one to say that the coaches have not been perfect, and just like many of you have been disappointed with Pagano's decisions and Pep's calls, are we really going to blame Hamilton for the lack of pass protection, or, at least today, Andrew Luck's inaccuracy? Is it Pagano's fault that this team didn't do well today? I assume that the tendency to blame the coaches is based on having the desire not to blame the players because coaches are in most cases much more replaceable than the players are, but I don't know.
I'll say again that I have disliked many of the calls, as the majority of Colts fans likely have, but we are overemphasizing it. We failed to execute, and, as of late, this team has not looked very good. We'll see if they can get back on track next week.
I was going through the game thread after the game had finished up and I noticed that people, one week after calling for Pep Hamilton's head and asking for him to just let Luck throw it, still want him fired. So I have come to the conclusion that you hate him. Personally. As for Manusky, he called a poor game in my mind, but how much should be blamed on him compared to the players?
I understand not wanting to blame our favorite players. I understand not wanting to say unkind words about Andrew Luck and Vontae Davis. I don't like to do that either. Know that these are two of my favorite players on this team, and I think they are outstanding, but both played very poorly by their standards today. Very few players had good games today.
I'll say it a third time. I'm not trying to forgive the coaches for everything they've done, and I absolutely agree that they have made some poor calls. However, every time we see something go wrong, we assume that it is something schematically incorrect, that can be blamed on the playcaller. We assume that poor play can be blamed on "Pagano not having his team ready", but it's really about the players themselves. We don't give coaches any credit for game-winning play calls, nor does any other fan, but we blame them heavily for our losses. Do we want a scapegoat? I assume it's the reason, and if so, does it tell something about ourselves as fans? If that's not the reason, what is it?
