Quick thoughts on the coaches

There is a lot of hate around this blog directed towards the coaches of the Colts. When we lose it seems people around here immediately lose all sense of perspective, and stirred on by short sighted people who post a lot here, start to rant and rave. Here are a few thoughts about the Colts team.

1.) The coaching staff and the GM are two separate entities. While they talk to each other and provide input, if you do not like the players brought in during the off-season, that would be on the GM, not the coaching staff.

2.) After watching the first 9 games of the year, I believe this team is worse in terms of talent than I thought they'd be at the beginning of the year. A lot of that is on the offensive side of the ball, and a lot of that is due to injury. However; I thought the Colts would be 5-4 right now (and a lot of people around here did too before the season started.

3.) We have a second year QB who will, like yesterday, sometimes drop the ball. Luck looked out of his depth yesterday. You can blame that on coaching, but that makes no sense. Luck is a great player and has done amazing things (and will continue to do so). Yesterday he just channeled his inner Curtis Painter.

4.) Our O line is very, very bad. I have no defense for Joe Gilbert.

5.) Our team has the least penalties, least penalty yards, and fewest fumbles

6.) We beat the Broncos, 49ers, and Seahawks

People on this Site tend to believe we have the most talented team ever, and every loss and every fail is on the coach. I think we have a very average team that is over performing in large part due to the coaching. The team has been decimated by injuries, the offensive line hasn't worked out, the defensive line is below average, AND we have had some horrible calls go against us this season. Yet despite all that, we are 6-3, performing above expectations, and have a 2 game lead in the division.

The NFL is a very tough league, and things can turn against your team in an instant. Even good coaches can have their teams fall apart. I still think Tom Coughlin and Mike Tomlin are good coaches, both teams have multiple superbowl winning QBs, have rosters with just as much talent as the Colts, both teams have played easier schedules than the Colts, and both find themselves 3 games back.

Do I agree with everything our coaches do? Of coarse not! I have a tendency to scream at them through the TV due to play calling etc... But at the end of the day the coaches have coaxed a lot from the talent level of our players. Our team is in the hunt for the playoffs and is out-performing many other teams of a similar talent level. And that is because of the coaching.
