Could Rex Ryan be the next Colts DC?

Rex could be fired as the Jets head coach after next week. The NFL media has considered him a lame duck coach since they hired John Idzik as GM. The Jets will be either 8-8 or 7-9 and will not make the playoffs. Idzik will probably want to hit reset and bring in a coach of his own. Certainly there could be other head coaching opportunities for Rex. Houston could be a possibility with the No. 1 pick and some pieces on defense already. If Dallas doesn't win against Philadelphia next week, I think Jason Garrett is fired. Some other jobs will surely open up.

The Colts could win the Super Bowl. They are getting hot at the right time, but if they don't, Irsay will clearly point to the defense breaking down in the 2nd half of the season especially in the blowouts to the Rams and Cardinals. Manusky is the likely fall guy for any scenario ending in something other than a Super Bowl victory. I say this because this is technically Chuck's first full season as the head coach and Hamilton will likely get a pass for the shit show of injuries he's had to deal with on offense this year.

Why not Rex? Pagano was his secondary coach in his final year as Baltimore's DC. They coach the same brand of defense. Mathis would be an appealing player for him to work with. Rex could even attract some free agents to the Colts. The team has an offense that's on the rise and is only a few good offensive linemen and the No. 1 receiver we'll need to draft in 2014 or 2015 from being complete. The Colts beat every playoff team they faced this year except one, and no disrespect to the Bengals but no one has them winning the AFC. The upside is there.

I'm not calling for Manusky to be fired, but we all know he was just a placeholder DC that Pagano had to bring in because of slim pickings when he was hired.
