Let's Remember

I, and I'm sure all of you, have seen it pointed out that the Colts were 2-14 a mere two years ago. After blowing up everything, here we are, with the team getting set to head back to the playoffs again this year.

Now I am as disappointed and frustrated with the way this team has played as well. At times, as Brad Wells has pointed out on Twitter, they are downright unwatchable. But let's take a step back.

Last year the team overachieved, heck we all thought it would be lucky to get 5 wins. Instead, we had 5 losses. A key was that last year's squad suffered no major injuries.

This year, the team is probably better. Note that most people pegged the Colts for around 9-10 wins. I personally had them at 10, which looks like a very distinct possibility at this point. But the team has no depth, nor should it. While Grigson has compiled a solid, not great, group of starters, there is zero depth because the front office hasn't had the time to build an entire team yet.

That may sound like I'm jumping on the injury train, but not quite. Take the terrible defense for example. The starters, when healthy, make this a solid defense, again not great, but solid. Take some players out though, either for injury or because they can't all play every down of every game, and suddenly you have Vaughn and/or Gordy playing corner. Or you have low to undrafted players in the front seven. The lack of depth is what is hurting the team on both sides of the ball, it has just been heightened by the injuries.

At the end of the day, the Colts will hit the win total most pegged for them at the beginning of the year. They'll be at home in the playoffs for a game and who would have expected that a mere two years after 2011? Plus, I would rather play the Chiefs than the Ravens.

I'll end my homework putting off rant on this note. Knowing that this team is capable of playing quality football, as evidenced at the start of the year and in the second half of a lot of the recent games, is there anyone you are really afraid of in the AFC? Outside of the Broncos, I feel like there is no one to be worried about. The Patriots? Well, they've caught the Colts' disease and can't play in the first half of games. Plus, Gronk is out again. The Bengals? We hung 28 on them in the second half, if the defense plays decent they are certainly beatable. The Chiefs? Very streaky team. If it's a shootout, they are beatable, as the Broncos and Chargers proved. The Ravens, yes I'm assuming they will be the 6 seed? Way too hit or miss because all they can really do is chuck it deep.

I'm excited for the playoffs to get here. Even if this team does make me want to throw the TV out the window at times.
