Free agency is quickly running up on us and it seems our colts will be major(atleast moderate) players in the game this year. This is a list of guys that could be available, and also who I think we should look at. After I go through the positions and list the guys that I think we should look at, I will give you five free agents out of the entire list that I would like to see the colts sign.
My criteria for each signing will be no one older than 28 yrs old. We have veteran leadership on this team and I feel there is no need for more. And at 28 yrs old, all of these guys or most are coming off of their rookie deals. So we would be aquiring them in their prime. And away we go....Offensive Tackle
LT - Brandon Albert (KC) Age: 28 Ht/Wt: 6'5/316lb Notes: Depending on what KC decides to do with the 1st pick in the draft, Albert is likely to hit the market. He was a top 5 tackle in 2011 and had a solid yr in 2012. Reports came out that said KC was thinking of moving him to G and he has publicly said he isnt doing that. He is a possibility and move Castanzo to RT.
LT - Will Beaty (NYG) Age: 28 Ht/Wt: 6'6/319lb Notes: 6th ranked free agent tackles this offseason. He has stated he wants franchise LT money though so will be expensive. He is durable as he played all 16 games for the Giants in 2012. Again, move Castanzo to RT.
RT - Gosder Cherilus (Det) Age: 28 Ht/Wt: 6'7/325lb Notes: Cherilus is coming off his rookie deal and likely to let walk this offseason. The reason theyll let him walk is bc they drafted Riley Rief and gave Jeff Bacus an extension. Cherilus has been very solid for the lions and in 2012 he was graded as the 2nd best RT in the league.
Other Notables: RT - Phil Loadholt (Min) - Likely to be resigned. LT - Jake Long (Mia) - To expensive (IMO), lots of question marks of declined play. LT - Ryan Clady (Den) - No flippin way he hits the market, likely to be resigned
Offensive Guard OG - Andy Levitre (Buf) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 6'5/303lb Notes: Best guard on the market, will be expensive. We know enough of Levitre, no real reason to explain more.
OG - Louis Vasquez (SD) Age: 25 Ht/Wt: 6'5/335lb Notes: Probably the 2nd best guard on the market. We all know of Mr. Vasquez as well. Moving on.
OG - Ramon Foster (Pit) Age: 27 Ht/Wt: 6'6/325lb Notes: The steelers do not value him bc they drafted Decastro last yr. When Decastro was hurt Foster played the rest of the season and was solid doing so. Foster very much wants to be appreciated and call a city home. This could be a low cost great signing by just committing to the guy and have him play his tail off for you bc you did.
OG - Geoff Schwartz (Min) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 6'6/331lb Notes: Missed all of 2011 due to injury then missed training camp in 2012. He was due to start before his injury. He is a solid run blocker and reportedly wants to start for somebody. Meaning he doesnt want to be in Minnesota anymore and he has confidence in his abliliy. Just needs a chance.
DT - Desmond Bryant (Oak) Age: 27 Ht/Wt: 6'5/290lb Notes: He played DT and DE for the raiders showing he is very versitle. Bryant replaced Richard Seymore the last 8 games of the season and recorded 4 sacks in that span. Also disruptive in the backfield and gets to the ball carrier.
DT - Glenn Dorsey (KC) Age: 27 Ht/Wt: 6'1/297lb Notes: KC seems ready to let him walk. Mainly bc he isnt the pass rusher they thought he was. In 2011 though he graded as the top run defender in the league. He battled injuries in 2012 and landed on the IR. He brings little pass rush but is a monster in the run game.
Rush Outside Linebacker
OLB - Paul Kruger (Bal) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 6'4/264lb Notes: We all know about Kruger. We all want him. We will see if the ravens let him hit the market. Enough said.
OLB - Anthony Spencer (Dal) Age: 29 Ht/Wt: 6'4/255lb Notes: Dallas is way over the cap and also switching to a 4-3 D (although it could suit Spencer better). Spencer would probably be expensive but would be a solid addition for 4yrs.
DB - Sean Smith (Mia) Age:25 Ht/Wt: 6'3/214lb Notes: Pretty sure he is gonna hit the market as miami doesnt think he is worth what he is asking. And that is 6ys 43million reportdly. Smith is a very solid corner but he lacks playmaking ability and by that I mean turnovers.
DB - Cary Williams (Bal) Age: 28 Ht/Wt: 6'1/190lb Notes: Wants big money, 8-10million an yr. Good corner but thats not happenning.
DB - Mike Jenkins (Dal) Age: 27 Ht/Wt: 5'10/202lb Notes: Definetly hitting the market and could be had for a reasonble price. A solid corner with star potential but was pushed down depth chart due to draft selections and free agent pickups by Dallas. Has HAD some injury issues, hopefully behind him.
DB - Keenan Lewis (Pit) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 6'0/208lb Notes: This is an ideal signing, the problem is the steelers probably arent going to let him hit the market.
Safety S - Jairus Byrd (Buf) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 5'10/203lb Notes: Best safety on the market but probably going to be franchised by the bills.
S - Kenny Phillips (NYG) Age: 26 Ht/Wt: 6'2/217lb Notes: Solid safety and reportedly does not want to play for the Giants anymore due to getting passed over. This would be and ideal signing.
S - Patrick Chung (Pats) Age: 25 Ht/Wt: 5'11/212lb Notes: Pats are not going to resign him bc they think he is injury prone. Although he is a playmaker with 6 int's in 2 seasons.
That is my list of free agents I think should be on the colts radar. Now, I am going to pick 5 of all those players I would like to see the colts sign. We obviously cant sign them all. I know we need a WR but honestly I just dunno what they plan on doing so Im leaving WR out. We can also not afford to pay for the best at each position so I am somewhat taking the cap hit into account. Here goes....
We will start with the o-line. 1st off I am completely confident in having Castanzo at LT, that being said, with my 1st aquisition Id like to see is Gosder Cherilus from the lions. He is most likely hitting the market and is only 28yrs old. I stated in his notes that he was graded as the 2nd best RT in the league in 2012. His salary would be moderate I believe. My 2nd signing is kind of a 2 way street, if Andy Levitre is available, YOU SIGN HIM. If Louis Vasquez is available, YOU SIGN HIM. Either of these two are obvious ideal signings. By signing either of these two we have successfully upgraded the o-line greatly.
Lets move on to DT. I think we resign Moala for depth but as far as outside free agents I am high on Desomond Bryant from Oakland. This is a low risk/high reward player that wouldnt cost much.
Next up.... Paul Kruger! Yeah yeah yeah we all know this is an easy one. If he's available, sign him period. 9 regular season sacks dont jump off the page, but add 4 more in the post season as well as young and sets the edge against the run, and you have yourself a fine all around OLBer.
My last addition I think might already be in the minds of both partys (player/franchise)is Kenny Phillips from the Giants. With the emergence of Stevie Brown, Phillips has said he doesnt think he's returning to NY. He missed some games due to injury last season but is a really solid safety who wouldnt break the bank.
These are my opinions fellas. Feel free to pick them apart. Some of them are high priced and some will be moderate. I am hoping im balanced enough as far as cap. Looking forward to the feedback.
