How to spend $43 Million

Stay connected for news and updates

The Colts have roughly $43 million in cap space this year. The new collective bargaining agreement means that they will need to spend nearly all of it. So, I'm going to take a shot at breaking it down. I'll round off the numbers to make the math easy.

Open Roster Spots - 18

Cap Dollars - $43 Million

Re-Signings - 6 players for $8 Million

Not much to get excited about here as most of the blood letting was done last year. Freeney should be the biggest name to depart this offseason and there isn't anyone that I would qualify as a priority resigning. Of the 18 Colts free-agents, I think these 5 have a chance to come back.

Pat McAfee - $2 Million

Winston Justice - $2 Million

Antonio Johnson - $1 Million

Darius Butler - $1 Million

Moise Fokou - $1 Million

AJ Edds - $1 Million

Free Agency - 8 players for $31Million

For the first time that most of us can remember, the Colts figure to make a splash in free agency. A lot of cap dollar and a lot of needs should lead to a very active pre-draft period. This was the most challenging part to make the cap dollars fit the players and I kept coming up with one less player than I wanted. I tried like heck to fit a franchise OT in here, but couldn't do it. I think by re-signing Justice, they end up keeping him starting at RT.

I would consider a couple of these guys overpays, but I also think it is what they will realistically sign for.

Louis Vasquez - OG - $8 Million

Cary Williams - CB - $7 Million

Louis Delmas - SS - $4 Million

Victor Butler - OLB - $4 Million

Ramses Barden - WR - $3 Million

Ricky Jean-Francois - DE - $2 Million

Chad Rinehart - OG - $2 Million

Greg Jones - FB - $1 Million

Draft Picks - 4 Players for $4 Million

Rookie pool dollars make draft picks super cheap against the salary cap. If free agency breaks down as above, we have a screaming need at OT and I would still like to see some help on defense. As much as I want an OT in the first, I don't see one falling to us. Going through this exercise, I realize I may have to prepare myself for Winston Justice starting again next year.

Round 1 - John Jenkins - NT - Georgia

Round 3 - Kyle Long - OT - Oregon

Round 4 - Michael Buchanan - OLB - Illinois

Round 5 - AJ Klein - ILB - Iowa State

So, there it is. All the dollars assigned to all the bodies. Comment away.
