It may sound a tad bit crazy, but such has been the Colts off season. Chuck Pagano indicated that Jerry Hughes would be given every opportunity to take over from Dwight Freeney, and as a former 1st round pick of the Colts, Indy would surely give him every opportunity to reward their faith in him. With that said why would the Colts give starter money to a guy, (Eric Walden), who could eventually lose out to Hughes for the other starting OLB position opposite Robert Mathis?
Maybe the Colts see Walden as an upgrade to Pat Angerer or Kavell Conner, and that's the reason why he was paid starter money. In relation to the Jerry Hughes, I believe he will be given a legitimate chance to start, but he may have to compete with one of the many college up-starts available in the 2013 draft. The 3-4 OLB is one of the deepest positions in the draft, with guys like Alex Okafor, Tank Carradine, Damontre Moore, Corey Lemonier, Chase Thomas, Trevardo Williams, Jamie Collins, Sio Moore, and Brandon Jenkins available in rounds 1-4. In addition to the aforementioned, if you were to take the concerns about Jarvis Jones and Barkevious Mingo in to consideration, both of those players could easily fall to the Colts at pick 24.
So how does Line backing group of Robert Mathis – Jerrell Freeman - Eric Walden – Alex Okafor/Jerry Hughes sound?
