I fully believe that Pags is still going to employ some personnel and hybrid packages next year. You heard it here first, on first and second down we are going to put that new shiny D line (Franklin, Redding and RJF) out there with Mathis and Walden and then on passing downs Hughes will sub for Walden. That will constitute our pass rush. With a decent secondary, that actually sounds pretty good to me.
Hughes was the best pass rusher outside of Mathis last year by a lot. As others have pointed out, he was way more efficient than Freeney and was still pretty good against the run especially in pursuit from the back side. Also, it's pretty hard to rush well if your interior line is getting no push. If someone can look back at the Ravens defense under Pags, my guess is the defense flexed packages not infrequently on passing downs even when they had premier talent all over the defense.
I'd bet dollars to doughnuts we are drafting a WR in round one. We are one Reggie injury away from having a very marginal receiving corps. I'm personally hoping for Hopkins who in most mocks will still be there for us at 24. A month ago I would have said CB but with the addition of Toler and Landry I think the FO feels pretty good about the secondary with what used to be your starting CB now acting as your nickle. I think we'll end up taking a little known rush OLB in the 3rd round as a developmental project behind Mathis.
