2013 Colts Rookie Minicamp: Review And Observations

USA TODAY Sports

The rookie minicamp has concluded. Here's what we gleamed from the three-day event.

The Colts invited 13 tryout players, 11 undrafted rookie free agent signings, 7 drafted players, and first year veterans like Jabin Sambrano (WR), Davin Meggett (RB), and Robert Griffin (OT) to their 2013 rookie minicamp. After the three-day event concluded on Sunday, we came away with these impressions, thoughts, and observations:

  • Bjoern Werner should transition quite well from playing defensive end in college to outside linebacker in a 3-4. He reportedly showed burst and explosion off the line, and is using an unorthodox stance to gain better leverage. He also batted down a couple of passes, something he was known for at FSU. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky told the media on Saturday that Werner has adjusted to the position switch better than any other player Manusky has ever coached.
  • Werner was used at both OLB positions during camp. Do not be surprised if he starts at the "edge setter" OLB position opposite Robert Mathis.
  • 2013 third round pick Hugh Thornton played exclusively at right guard during camp. When asked why, Chuck Pagano said, "When you start moving [young guys] around, you're not going to see the progress." He went on regarding Thornton at right guard, saying, "We're going to let him settle in there, get comfortable, and go from there. He had a good camp. He did a nice job."
  • If gushing to the press is any indication of how a coach truly views a player, then Pagano might be looking to move in and make a family with 4th round pick Khaled Holmes.
  • 7th round pick Kerwynn Williams flashed some speed as a kick returner. This is the area the Colts seem to think Williams will play the most in.
  • For the second year in a row, wide receiver Jabin Sambrano stood out among the wide receivers. Sambrano was placed on IR before the start of the season last year, but was released from IR and later picked up by the Buccaneers. They released him and Indianapolis re-signed him in early January 2013. During the 2012 rookie camp, OTAs, and training camp, Sambrano really stood out. He was Andrew Luck's favorite target. If Sambrano stays healthy, he has to be considered the favorite to earn the 5th WR spot on the 53-man roster. The coaching staff really like him.
  • Undrafted corners Sheldon Price from UCLA and Allen Chapman of Kansas State stood out. Price reportedly broke up several passes and looked good in man-to-man. Chapman was so good that he earned a roster spot as a tryout player, supplanting his former K-State teammate Nigel Malone on the Colts current 90-man roster.
  • Fullback Dan Moore showcased some good receiving and running ability.
  • The "Mr. Irrelevant' pick in 2013, tight end Justice Cunningham, might have been the star of camp. He showed off some impressive receiving skills. More than a few media people described his play as "eye opening." On the final play of camp, the Colts re-enacted the final four seconds of their dramatic Week 13 win over the Detroit Lions. 4th down. 4 seconds left. A touchdown wins. Cunningham caught the touchdown pass from tryout QB Tanner Marsh.
  • The tryout kickers were awful, with both going 3-9 on Sunday. Neither were signed.
  • 6th round selection John Boyett did not participate at all in camp, though he was present. The Colts held him out as he is still recovering from two surgically repaired knees. The Colts said they expect him to be ready by training camp.
