Colts Place NT Brandon McKinney On IR For Second Straight Year UPDATE

Rob Carr

McKinney's career might be finished as the mammoth-sized nose tackle is placed on injured reserve for the second year in a row during training camp. By placing McKinney on IR, the team was able to rescinded waivers on recently released linebacker C.O. Prime. Prime was cut earlier today to make room for linebacker Josh McNary.

Per Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun, the Colts have placed nose tackle Brandon McKinney on the injured reserve (IR) list, ending his 2013 season before it ever began. Stampede Blue is working to confirm Wilson's report, but, since this is coming from Aaron, you can pretty much take that as gospel.

Mike Chappell has confirmed the story for the Indianapolis Star. No word on whether or not the Colts have given him the special designated to return tag that allows one player to come back from IR in-season.

This would be the second straight year McKinney has landed on IR during training camp. He tore his ACL during camp last year after signing with Indianapolis as a free agent from Baltimore. This year, McKinney has had swelling in the same knee, preventing him from practicing since training camp began.

McKinney was healthy enough to practice during OTAs, and he did not enter training camp listed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The move makes me wonder if McKenney's career is finished as well. That's two straight years landing on IR while in camp. He hasn't played a single down of football for the Colts since signing a two-year, $2 million deal with the Colts in 2012.

[UPDATE]: The Colts have indeed confirmed that McKinney's season is over. However, by placing McKinney on IR, the team was able to recall recently released linebacker C.O. Prime. Prime, who is now back on the team's 90-man training camp roster, was cut earlier today to make room for linebacker Josh McNary, who joined the team after completing his military service in the U.S. Army.
