Last year was probably the best live experience I have ever had going to a Colts game. I grew up in Indy having season tickets to the Colts and Pacers. I have a lot of fond Pacers memories because they were more relevant when I was growing up. My family moved away the year we drafted Peyton, and I sadly never really got to see him play. In 2005 I think it was I went to see the Colts/Cardinals game just before new year. This sketchy old guy kept going around shaking everyone's hand and saying "Happy BLUE year." I couldn't help but laugh because I was thinking that will be me in 50 years. That game was very exciting because we won and it came down to the last drive...the bad thing is that we pulled our starters b/c we had everything locked up at that points. AHHHH those were the days.
Anyway, Last year when the Dolphins played the Colts, it was on my birthday. I decided to travel up and go all out. My friend, whom I converted to a Colts fan the year we lost in the Super Bowl, drove up from Raleigh, North Carolina. We spent the extra money and got front row tickets on the 40 yard line right behind the defensive bench. My friend and myself also spent some more money and did the VIP tailgating where they had an open bar...good times. Needless to say I was celebrating my birthday early that day. After a few hours of drinking and eating some good food, we ventured into Lucas Oil Stadium.
I was blown away by the stadium because it was the first time I had seen my team play outside of the Hoosier..er...I mean RCA Dome. Once the game started, I remember on the Colts' first drive the defense gave up a field goal on the very first drive. Corey Redding, who is one of the scariest human beings I have ever seen in person by the way, took his helmet off and looked right at me and my friend. His eyes get real big and he yells at us, "WHERE WERE YOU???!!! WE NEEDED YOU!!!" My friend and myself both stopped, tried not to soil ourselves, and looked like a deer in headlights. A few seconds elapse and we start yelling, "Lets go BLUE!!!" lol I don't think we sat down the rest of the game. I lost my voice for a week we were yelling so hard.
Another cool thing that happened was I was wearing my Drake Nevis jersey (I'm still mad we let him walk but that's another topic). I yelled out, "Lets go Drake!" as I pointed at my #994 jersey. He looked surprised because I'm sure I was the first person he had seen wearing his jersey at the pro level. He goes in and breaks up a run for a short loss. When the defense gets back to the bench he kind of gives me a little head nod.
I had an absolute blast last year and was one of the best birthdays I've ever had. I got to see Andrew set the single game passing record a few feet from me and we won a close nail-biter... Definitely good times. here's to hoping the Colts/Dolphins continue to have such fun games! ~Nick~
