I rarely post on this blog anymore; I usually just get caught up with the happenings of our beloved team and skip the comments sections. But recently, I have seen statements about how Donald Brown has ‘turned around’ or ‘finally peaked’… and the one that throws me each time is "We should resign him"! Did I miss something?
So, let’s say Brown finally did have outstanding year and really helped. According to NFL Stats I don’t see it. Yes, I get that depending on the stats you use, you can make players look good or bad. So I just went with the generalized NFL.com Stats website to take a look at this.
In the last 5 years the Colts Offensive Line has been in rankings:
2013 - 6th
2012 - 23rd
2011 - 16th
2010 - 1st
2009 - 1st
And in those 5 years, Donald Brown has been ranked:
2013 - 55th (Trent Richardson was ranked 57th)
2012 - 36th
2011 - 45th
2010 - 45th
2009 - 61st
His first year and this year were considered his worst, but yet he was considered a bust every year up until now. And while I agree that Trent Richardson needs an entire offseason with the Colts, he was ranked right behind Brown.
Additionally, Donald Brown's Average Salary is $2,087,000 with a Cap Hit this year of 2.7M. There are better FA running backs that are going to be available next year we could go after that are better than Brown. While I believe Richardson and Ballard with Choice could make a good combo RB group another piece needs to be added at the right price. James Starks (510K), (RFA) Joique Bell (630K), Rashard Jennings (630K), LeGarrette Blount (680K), and Peyton Hillis (715K) are all available next year and cost a lot less than Brown AND rank higher than Brown does! I am not saying these RBs are exactly what we need, but they do more with less money!
And finally, for argument’s sake let’s say Donald Brown really did peak! This year he really did something!! If a player regardless of position plays 4 years at a high dollar amount as what many consider a bust and the final year of his contract finally lives up to his expectations, then I am sorry… that player must go. Great guy, hope he finds a team to play with, just not our team!
