I have the day off and rather than be productive I am looking stuff up on the internet. Greg Manusky spent 6 years as linebacker coach in the NFL and in 2007 he was hired by the 49ers to be the defensive coordinator. The NFL site ranks defenses based on a statistical analysis ranked the 49ers defense:
2007 - 25th
2008 - 13th
2009 - 15th
2010 - 13h
I will note he was let go at the end of the 2010 year and Vic Fangio was hired and the team ended that year with the 4th rated defense.
He was hired by the Charges for the 2011 year
2011 - 16th
He was fired and replaced by John Pagano and the team ended with the 9th rated defense.
He was hired by the Colts for the 2012 year:
2012 - 26th
2013 - 20th
(numbers reflect regular season only)
I have never understood why teams keep recycling guys who on paper have done nothing to inspire confidence that they can turn things around. Manusky with seven years experience has never had a defense perform in the top 10 and in fact the teams that replaced him showed they were top 10 defenses. I will admit I did not go in and look at draft picks and free agency signings but I do see one thing in common they replaced him - coincidence - maybe? I questioned the hiring when it happened and now two years later I am still wondering why? There are a few d-coordinators out there with proven track records - not sure who might be available when/if you read this - but if you don't want to bring in a guy with NFL experience then maybe roll the dice on a college guy like Nick Aliotti or Tim Beckman - why stick with a guy who has never been outstanding?
