With the 2014 off-season upon us, it's time to think up scenarios that you would never think of otherwise, simply due to boredom. In my case, I took time out of studying for my exam to think up a potential signing the Indianapolis Colts could look into this off-season.
That would be adding safety Kerry Rhodes. Now, I know he hasn't played in an entire year, which is a major red flag, but hear me out a little.
Rhodes has talent, which he showcased in his last active season in the NFL (2012).
He was on the Arizona Cardinals and his stats went as follows: 67 tackles, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 11 passes defended and 4 interceptions.
These numbers show me that he is a legitimate coverage safety, and that is an area of desperate need for the Colts.
And the reason he didn't play in 2013 wasn't cause of injury and it doesn't seem to be because of any lack of talent. But, according to a pro football talk article, it is most likely due to some rumors that surfaced about his sexual orientation.
Now, I don't know about you, but I believe the Colts locker room could handle a 'dilemma' such as this with class, and it shouldn't be the reason Rhodes doesn't get on a roster.
In my eyes, Rhodes would simply be an insurance policy/stop gap in the sense that, if the Colts fail to sign Jairus Byrd or T.J. Ward, Rhodes would be there to potentially hold down the safety position alongside LaRon Landry, with Delano Howell competing for his spot.
Yeah, he'll be 32 years old at the start of the 2014 season, but as I said, I don't see him as a long-term solution. Signing him to a 1 or 2 year deal at around 1-2 million per year would be great for a starter/solid backup.
If he doesn't contribute on the defensive side of the ball or on special teams, just cut him.
It's a low risk, high reward signing that could end up making Ryan Grigson looking like a pretty smart guy.
Anyways, it was just an idea I had, and I would really like to hear your opinion on this and if you had any other interesting names to throw out. I heard another stampede bluer talk about Nick Collins (who announced he is interested in making a come back recently) as a potential candidate to join the horseshoe.
Thoughts? Concerns? Criticisms? I'd love to hear them. Go Colts!
